Suite toujours aussi mystérieuse.
Les héritiers explorent les différentes pistes dont ils disposent, et la dernière est l’un de mes passages préférés de la série.
Les personnages sont toujours aussi attachants, on sent beaucoup plus l’esprit de « communauté » qui se solidifie.
Grosse révélation à la fin, et première apparition d’un des personnages les plus importants de toute la série, même en connaissant la suite, j’ai hâte de la relire.

Deuxième voyage dans l'univers des livres audio, et après avoir abandonné une première fois, j'ai décidé quelques mois plus tard de persévérer en reprenant l'écoute de ce deuxième tome. Grand bien m'a prit !
Après un début assez difficile pour moi, car il m'a fallu resituer l'univers et les personnages après la grande pause, j'ai finalement réussi à me laisser entraîner par l'histoire. J'ai été assez contente de retrouver nos héros, qui mûrissent bien dans ce deuxième opus. Ils prennent de la profondeur, se découvrent des talents cachés... Talents qui leur seront très utiles au vu des obstacles qu'ils vont rencontrer sur leur route !
La première partie se concentre sur la retraite des héritiers. Bien cachés chez un commerçant douteux, ils passent beaucoup de temps à parler, échafauder des plans, des stratégies, à évoquer la suite de leurs aventures. Bien qu'un peu longue, j'ai quand même apprécié cette partie, car l'on découvre les fameux talents de Yan et Leti, à savoir la magie pour l'un, et le combat pour l'autre, et j'ai beaucoup aimé les découvrir ainsi.
La seconde partie est plus vivante, elle se laisse plus facilement écouter, car tous se sont remis en route, bien décidés à aller au bout de leur quête. Nous découvrons également une nouvelle héritière, Lana, une religieuse pour le moment assez effacée, mais qui, je pense, est pleine de surprises.
Magie, quêtes aussi bien générales que personnelles, liens qui se solidifient, rebondissements... Voilà ce que l'on trouve dans Le serment orphelin, un deuxième tome que j'ai préféré au premier. Mention spéciale pour le final et ses révélations et pour le passage entre Yan et le dieu. L'auteur nous dépeint un univers extrêmement riche et profond, dont on n'a fait qu'effleurer la surface. Un tome qui me donne envie d'enchaîner avec la suite, ce qui est désormais chose faite !

Malgré de grandes révélations et l'apparition des réels "méchants" de l'histoire, ce tome était peut-être un peu moins épique que le dernier.
Ici, l'histoire se met réellement en place et on laisse moins de temps pour l'action. Cependant on comprend vite qu'il ne fait qu'introduire les deux prochains tomes qui promettent d'être fort en émotions.
Très, très hâte d'en lire plus.

Pas mal :) je lirai le 3e tome, mais il faut avouer que l'auteur prend beaucoup beaucoup son temps pour raconter son histoire :(

Un deuxième tome époustouflant, bien à la hauteur du premier. On pourrait croire que l'auteur se serait essoufflé pendant les presque 600 pages de ce deuxième opus, et bien pas du tout. Le lecteur est tenu en haleine durant tout le long du récit, et ce jusqu'à même le dernier paragraphe !
Difficile de décrire la totalité des émotions que j'ai ressenti pendant ma lecture, ou les évènements s'enchainaient sans pour autant que ce soit incohérent ou forcé. On voyage de lien en lieu, on découvre les différents paysages et on apprend à apprécier chaque personnage avec son caractère bien particulier, et tout ceci à un bon rythme ni trop lent ni trop rapide.
J'ai particulièrement apprécié la sagesse et la compassion dont faisaient preuve les personnages à tour de rôle, bon d'accord plus Corenn, Lana et Yan, mais voilà quoi ^^'. Ce style qui fait qu'on s'attache tout simplement aux personnages, et qui les rends tellement appréciables.
Alors, je vais pas mentir et dire qu'à aucun moment je ne me suis sentie perdue par rapport aux localisations, termes particuliers et peuples mais de mon point de vue ce n'est pas non plus un énorme frein à la compréhension de la lecture. Je me suis rarement référée à la carte en début ou au lexique en fin, parce que j'avoue que j'ai juste fini par abandonner à un moment. Mais malgré tout, ne pas savoir situer Goran par rapport au Val guerrier ou Ith ne m'a pas gêné plus que de raison. (oui, ça aurait pu ajouter au côté immersif du récit, c'est pas faux). Et puis tout ces peuples... A la limite je saurais dire d'où viennent chacun des héritiers que l'on a suivi, mais c'est tout.
En somme toute, une lecture fortement agréable dont je me réjouis de plonger dans la suite. Je me souviens n'avoir même pas encore terminé ce tome que j'avais déjà hâte de lire le suivant.

OH MEIN GOTT !!!
… mehr fällt mir zuerst nicht ein … echt … Wahnsinn … es ist echt unglaublich, was Grimbert in den letzten zehn Seiten raushaut … Oo … ich kann es immer noch nicht fassen …
Aber drehen wir die Zeiger zurück … beginnen wir mit dem Anfang …
Der zweite Band schließt nahtlos an den ersten Teil an und unsere Gefährten verlassen die Insel Ji. Ihre Reise führt sie zurück, aber auch voran und endlich beginnt auch ihre charakterliche Entwicklung. Yan wird zum Magier ausgebildet und Léti zur Kriegerin. Auch bei den anderen Gefährten zeigen sich neue Hintergründe und es kommt auch noch ein Besuch auf sie zu.
Doch all das ist nur nebensächlich. Denn es gilt, ihren Widersacher aufzudecken, gegen die Züu zu bestehen und natürlich das Geheimnis von der Insel Ji und den Pforten zu lösen und und und …
Genau DAS ist es, was diese Reihe so besonders macht. Diese viele Fragen, die immer im Raum schweben und nie wirklich beantwortet werden. Dafür hat man wieder andere Fragen, die endlich eine Antwort finden, nur um dadurch noch mehr Fragen aufzuwerfen. Es liest sich wirklich mehr wie ein Thriller, nein, wie ein Fantasy Pageturner und man kann einfach nicht mehr aufhören zu lesen, wenn man erst einmal begonnen hat.
Ich liebe diese Reihe jetzt schon und es ist jetzt auch nicht wirklich verwunderlich, dass ich anschließend gleich den dritten Band lesen werde … oder? ;)

Il y a plus d'un siècle, un homme étrange du nom de Nol visita tous les rois du monde connu. Personne ne sut jamais pourquoi mais il emmena avec lui les Sages désignés par les monarques pour un voyage mystérieux vers l'île de Ji. Ce qu'ils firent et qu'ils virent là-bas, sur cette île déserte et désolée, nul ne le sait. Les survivants emportèrent leur secret dans la tombe… Le passé a rattrapé les descendants des Sages, assassinés l'un après l'autre. Ceux qui échappent au massacre se mettent en route pour Ji. Car là-bas se trouve la réponse…
J’ai découvert le premier tome du Secret de Ji, la saga de fantasy de Pierre Grimbert, en 2011. Depuis, je ne cesse de me dire qu’il faut absolument que je poursuive ma lecture mais vous savez comment c’est : les nouveautés priment sur les anciennes sagas et le temps passe. Mon astuce, dans ces cas-là, c’est la version audio ! J’ai recommencé au début, mes souvenirs étant très vagues, et me voici donc aujourd’hui avec un retour à vous proposer sur le tome 2 : Le serment orphelin. On y suit toujours les héritiers dans leur fuite éperdue des Züu et leur quête du commanditaire de ces derniers.
La première partie du roman est assez lente. Nos amis se sont réfugiés pour quelques décades dans le repère d’un trafiquant et l’auteur en profite pour travailler un peu plus ses personnages, notamment les plus jeunes : Yan et Léti. Tandis que le premier se découvre magicien et entre en apprentissage auprès de Corenn, la seconde apprend à se battre avec Grigan. Entre leurs leçons respectives et les discussions stratégiques pour échapper aux Züu, on fait plus ample connaissance avec les personnages et, peu à peu, on s’attache à eux. Ce tome voit d’ailleurs l’arrivée d’une nouvelle héritière, Lana, qui apporte une dimension plus théologique à cette histoire.
La seconde partie est peut-être un peu plus dynamique, puisque nos héros se remettent en route. C’est l’occasion de réaliser, une fois encore, à quel point l’univers imaginé par Pierre Grimbert est riche. Il a, de toute évidence, effectué un énorme travail de worldbuilding sur cette saga, et on ne fait qu’effleurer toutes les possibilités de ce monde. Lieux, peuples et castes, créatures, religion, magie, il y a tellement de choses que ça en donnerait presque le tourni ! Du côté de l’intrigue, en revanche, j’ai trouvé ça un poil longuet. La quête des héritiers n’avance pas beaucoup même si l’on finit, dans les toutes dernières pages, par obtenir des informations capitales.
Si l’ensemble peut paraître très classique, il n’en reste pas moins sympathique malgré quelques petites longueurs. L’auteur préserve bien le suspens en nous proposant un final à la fois plein de révélations et de mystères, ce qui ne fait qu’amplifier notre envie de découvrir la suite. Je me lance dès à présent dans L’ombre des anciens, en audio toujours.

Het is enige tijd geleden dat ik het eerste deel van Het geheim van Ji heb gelezen, dus het duurde even voor ik me alles weer een beetje herinnerde. De erfgenamen komen bij van de gebeurtenissen bij het eiland Ji, terwijl de dreiging van de Züu nog boven hen hangt. De dynamiek van de groep krijgt vorm en de erfgenamen zijn vastbesloten om het geheim van Ji te achterhalen.
De karakters zijn sterk en de lessen in magie die Yan krijgt van één van de erfgenamen zijn het meest interessant om te lezen. Er gebeurt niet heel veel in dit boek, maar toch verveelt het niet. De hoofdfiguren zijn goed geschreven door Grimbert, hij vervalt niet in clichés. Ik ga zeker niet lang wachten voor ik met deel 3 begin.

I've read the second instalment of this series and no, I'm not a fan. The pacing and the plot were as bad as in the first book and, again, I only liked one character. Me continuing this series is highly unlikely. I just needed something to read while on holiday.

I love the world created in the books but the storyline tends to go very slow. Only a few Parts made me read on and not put the book away. I finished it but it was a struggle. Not very excited yet to read the third.

De eerste helft van het boek is zeer traag en een beetje saai. Daarna gaat alles een stuk sneller en doen de erfgenamen een aantal schokkende ontdekkingen. Het eindigt op een spannende cliffhanger. Ik ben zeker benieuwd naar het volgende boek.

Better than the first part. It's a very complex world Pierre Grimbert presents to his readers, but it got an unique style and you grow to like the characters even more.

The first one was a bit slow to get into, with not a whole lot of action, but it was necessary for the world building.

The book is just as good and intriguing as the first one. There are still so many questions to be answered though. Can't wait to read the next books and find out!

Whether you enjoy "The Orphans' Promise" more or less depends on one thing: whether you enjoyed the first Secret of Ji book.
So for people who liked Pierre Grimbert's dense prose and intriguingly realistic world-building, the second part of his fantasy series will probably have the same appeal. It's a solid if not exceptional fantasy adventure, which can be slow-moving at times, but is redeemed by the richness of the world he has sculpted.
First, a bit of backstory -- long ago, representatives came to the island of Ji, and glimpsed something so life-altering that they were forever bound together by it. In the years that followed, they and their descendants came to visit the island once more, passing the secret of what was on Ji through the family line... until most of them were murdered.
And now that the remaining descendants have learned the secret of Ji -- and been transformed in mind by what they now know -- they're on the run from the followers of the goddess Zuïa, who are determined to kill them. As the final treat, a mysterious dark-clad man is following them. Their only hope is to find an old journal that will somehow guide them.
"The Orphans' Promise" is not so much a sequel as a "part two" in the Heirs storyline -- it's like a really vast book got broken up into chunks and packaged as multiple smaller books. So people who liked/disliked the first book will probably like/dislike this one as well, because the story has the same strengths and weaknesses.
Grimbert tends to write rather dense prose, heavy on descriptions and character development and light on action. It also seems to be rather clumsily translated, rendering the dialogue rather stilted. But while it can be ponderous, it also reveals a very richly-imagined world based on Asian cultures, with well-entrenched religions and cultural traditions. And while there are bursts of action, Grimbert often settles down into developing what he has already introduced.
It also has a wide array of characters from different places and cultures, but now they are united and growing closer. Grimbert spends time exploring the ever-changing characters as the story slowly unwinds, but he devotes the most attention to Leti and Yan, both of whom have become vastly different people from whom they were at the first book's start.
"The Secret of Ji 2: The Orphans' Promise" follows up directly from the first book, and has mostly the same strengths and weaknesses. An intriguing, if dense, story for people who want some atypical fantasy.

"The Secret of Ji 2: The Orphans' Promise" follows up directly from the first book, and has mostly the same strengths and weaknesses. An intriguing, if dense, story for people who want some atypical fantasy.

We do not tend to judge books by their covers, but these elves do tend at times to be attracted to them because of the cover art and this is surely the case with Pierre Grimbert’s “The Orphan’s Promise”, the second book in the Secret of Ji series that we received for free through Goodreads. Alas, we did not read the first volume before reading this book, which put us at a slight disadvantage in terms of understanding the plot, although it was not long before we caught on.
The Island of Ji holds a mystery and encountering it has affected a group of individuals so profoundly that they cannot view their world in the same way again. This brings them into conflict with the Powers that Be who seek to hunt them down and eliminate them, and the knowledge of this experience they hold.
Yet, this book is not so much about action, but the development of the relationship between the principle characters, and it is important to understand that it is a bridge to further books and not meant to stand alone. Still, it is well written and interesting; however, it did not evoke our imagination to the extent that we would love it and carry it in our hearts and minds for years, which is what we are always looking for and hoping for in books. But we have found that such experiences are very personal in nature and others may be moved more profoundly by this book than we were.
If you are looking for a good fantasy series, this may be for you. It is certainly worth checking out.

I received a copy of this book through Goodreads' First Reads.
I waited to read the book till I got a copy of the first book in the series - and I'm glad I did. This is definitely a case of one-story-split-into-parts, not just stories that happen to be set in the same world. As with the first installment ('Six Heirs') the ending leaves the reader hanging... but I pretty much expected that.
As the story opens, the group of six is fleeing assassin-priests. Their goal is to stay alive, and find out who it is that wants them dead, and why. To this aim, there is much weapons-training, magic-learning, and investigating.
For those who enjoy classic fantasy, with both feet planted firmly in the tropes of the genre, I'd recommend this series.

Intriguing but disappointing second book
As with any series I expect that the middle book won't have an ending. However, the books in this series seems to always end abruptly with the characters in a somewhat precarious situation. The central mystery of "why" has yet to be addressed and I'm not sure if I care enough to find out by reading the next book. Just a very slowly paced low stakes series with characters that, though somewhat interesting, aren't drawing me to hungrily devour the series.

I have not read the first book. I won this in a Goodreads giveaway, unaware that it was the second book sadly.
I'm sure my review could be better fitted if I'd read the first one. The book was enjoyable. The translation from French to English was exciting. I could tell that it was originally in a different language in some parts with wording, this book is good in the aspect of fantasy and I hope that I can read the first one and not be so confused.

Just ok
Good enough storyline to keep you interested and reading along, but none of the characters are really that great. Not much or intense action, the the romance angles aren't fully fleshed out, but there is plenty of mystery and intrigue. It's interesting with a little bit of everything you might expect but nothing stands out. This is the second installment and I will read the third, but mediocre at best.

Eines meiner lieblings Fantasy-Bücher, die ich bisher gelesen habe.
Die ersten zwei Bänder der Reihe haben mich in ihren Bann gezogen und ich bin unglaublich gespannt auf die noch folgenden Teile. Auf jeden Fall mindestens 4 Sterne !!!
