What is the hardest challenge you’ve faced as a student of the Italian language? You can work hard on your grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, but being able to communicate naturally isn’t easy.In fact, the toughest part of learning Italian is knowing how to speak like a native.
Most textbooks are made to teach you the traditional rules and structures of a language and are great for getting around the grammar and spelling questions you may have.
However, how many of them provide you the tools necessary to have a common conversation with a best friend or someone you’ve just met? Not many at all.

Going to another country, one with a different language, can provoke anxiety….like in this quote from a Clint Eastwood movie: “…you've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya…?”
Having a phrase book on easy access, may help to quell some of that. Maybe not if this is the phrase you are reaching for: “I’m going to bet five-hundred Euros.” Ho intenzione di scommettere cinquecento euro. o een-ten-zee-O-neh dee skom-MET-teh-reh chin-kweh-CHEN-to EH-oo-ro.
This book is handy on my phone and the pronunciation help is appreciated: “What number is on this paper?” Che numero è scritto su questo foglio*? ke NOO-meh-ro EH s-KREET-to soo KWES-to FOL-lee-o? *NOTE: Raise your tongue towards the palate while pronouncing “L”."
The common phrases are just that: frequently employed and handy (particularly if you carry this on your phone). This kind of book will soon be going out of fashion as our phones will be able to speak for us and A.I. will take over.
Until then, the price is low for having this as a potential help (even if it is to bet 500 Euros on a horse).
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
As a frequent traveler, I am always looking for ways to learn foreign languages. I have tried everything from apps to courses and I believe this book is by far the best technique. The author begins the book with the correct way of pronouncing letters and sounds then gives an overview of basic words like colors and numbers. The book gradually moves to short phrases using the words you just learned. Then as the book progresses, the author divides each learning section into common scenerios you my find yourself in while traveling: directions, ordering food, dating etc. Definitely will jot down a few phrases when I eventually find myself back in Italy. I highly recommend this books for first time travelers as well as experienced ones.
A good book to learn some basic sentences that may be useful when travelling to Italy without speaking Italian. It can also be used to help students. The sentences or phases are separate by themes and at the beginning of the book, there is some explanation about the pronunciation which can be very useful for people whose mother tongue is English.
