No way. Not happening. Aliens disguised as pets are NOT invading Earth. It’s just Brenna’s imagination. Right? Then it happened again. That cute little puppy just morphed into a spikey-haired creature. So did a cat. And a hamster. Even a turtle. Suddenly everyone’s getting new pets and all of them are something else underneath. Brenna soon discovers other kids see the aliens, too. But the adults don’t realize the danger. Because the aliens have turned all them, including Brenna’s parents, into pet gushing slaves. Brenna and her friends frantically search for a way to defeat these invaders. But time is running out for Brenna. She’s growing up. Soon she’ll become a pet gusher, too.
Kay Goodnight's Petdemonium was a delightful book to read out loud with my youngest. We both thoroughly enjoyed Brenna and Baxter's attempts to rid their town of space aliens nefariously disguised as cute kittens and puppies. I particularly appreciated Kay Goodnight's clever writing and snappy pacing, and I thought the ending was satisfying too; we were definitely rooting for Star and the kids in the goat barn. Such a fun family read.
Petdemonium is a fun read for older elementary and younger middle school children. The unique view of pets as the primary antagonists is unique, especially for pet lovers.
Brenna and Baxter, good friends, are the first to notice strange behavior in a neighborhood dog. It is up to the two seventh-graders to save the day from the demonic pet invasion. Together they have to develop plans to go up against the demon pets, parents, and older kids.
I believe this story will resonate well with middle-agers and pre-teens. It's fun, moves quickly, and is full of unexpected twists and surprises. Brenna and Baxter grow through their struggles and setbacks. While entertaining, the observed life-lessons provide guidance in a (very) light-handed non-preachy manner.
This book would be fun for the indicated ages and would be acceptable to all parents. While pet-lovers may feel conflicted given the title, I believe they'll enjoy the story and will find the characterization of several types of pets to be very entertaining.
Weird? Yep. Clever? Sure. Fun? Absolutely. This is the kind of book you sit down to read, and several hours later, wonder where the day has gone. The author puts us squarely in the thirteen-year old head of Brenna—a young girl coming-of-age—and takes us on a wild, world-saving-kind of ride. Plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Written for the midgrade reader in all of us, sure to please young & old alike. Highly recommended.
Aliens disguised as pets invade Earth. Now there's a pet that's really something else underneath living in every home. Adults are controlled by them and become all pet-gushy forgetting the names of their own children. Neglected and often homeless the children band together to find a solution, reclaim Earth, and get their families back.
PETDEMONIUM is a charming sci fi adventure any young reader would enjoy.
This is a great book for middle age or young teenagers. It's got a good plot, where lots of strange things are going on and the kids need to find a solution. Their parents can't help them, so they're on their own to get out of a real mess. Good surprise ending.
Fantastic. Fun. Funny. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Brenna's adventures in defeating the not-a-pets! This is a definite recommendation for anybody with early middle schoolers at home.
