Rate this book
"Gender equality begins at home, and families are on the front lines of change. " - UN Women

This handbook is intentionally written like an instruction manual to help parents find gender-equality answers quickly. It's packed with valuable insight and easy-to-implement suggestions to help girls discover who they are, build confidence and social worth, and make connections to like-minded people who can help them explore their interest(s). You'll find solutions to realistic questions

- My daughter isn't interested in any STEM subjects. How do I help her find her passion?
- What can I do to help my introvert daughter feel included in girl power?
- What's the best way to explain 'consent' to my daughter so she remembers?
- What should I do when my daughter experiences gender bias?
- How do I raise my daughter to be strong and confident without sounding like a hardened feminist?
- What's the best way to establish a fair household chore routine? Allowance?
- Are there any safe online resources for helping my daughter find the right role model?
- My daughter has her own room. Should I create a more visible project space for her? How?

The best part? Each chapter is written with busy parents in mind. Instead of long-winded theoretical verbiage, you’ll find succinct step-by-step instructions for enabling gender-equality confidence.

Laudable Effort But…

Having been a young girl in a time where gender equality and gender bias weren't topics that were on the table, I was curious about what this book would be about specifically. I had hoped it would be precisely what the title stated, as that is my fondest wish for every nonfiction book that I read. But I felt like this book focused on other topics aside from helping a girl grow into gender equality, which diluted the message of the book. Most of this book, honestly, seems to be more about good parenting rather than just specifics about gender equality and bias. The author essentially looks at nine ways that you can better support your young daughter as she grows into womanhood and her own unique self. I felt, though, that not enough information was given on some topics for it to be truly actionable by a loving parent. A rough framework, given with little preamble for some rather complex concepts, was sometimes laid out without really giving the parent all the tools necessary to help bring the idea into fruition in their daughter's life. (Or it started in the middle, assuming that the parent would just naturally know certain things, and therefore, would be able to share about them with their child.) The book's subtitle falsely calls it a “step-by-step” guide. This seems to be a fault of many nonfiction books lately. To me, step-by-step suggests a sequential order, that one step follows another. That is definitely not the case with the information in this book. That said, there are some wonderfully supportive ideas for young girls here, making this book a good read for any parents of minority-age daughters.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Two stars for the book itself, three for the wealth of additional resources included. The book itself covers what I felt were more the basics of raising a decent human, but it did have quite a few good ideas in that regard. I think the book could benefit from being addressed to both genders, as how we raise our boys has as much, if not more, influence on equality, than how we raise our girls. A thin read, but I'm looking forward to exploring the recommended resources. Free on Kindle.
