Ah, marriage, wonderful, loving and adventurous...But NOT Always!! This is a fast-paced, fascinating story of the past clashing with the present! With twists, turns and amazing surprises that will have you shocked and breathless, we follow Hilda and Pete from England to New Zealand. Pete is a builder who buys homes to renovate and sell, with Hilda assisting, a loving couple married for several years. Her Mom has been in jail in New Zealand for most of her life, charged with the murder of her Dad. She is to be released soon and Hilda is hoping to make her feel at home. Once in New Zealand Pete looks for a house to buy, quickly finding one he loves. When he takes Hilda to see it she can't believe her eyes- It is Her Old Home!!! Now you start to wonder, this is a little strange..Many folks died in that house, and even as a child Hilda thought it had ghosts roaming around, although both her parents dismissed that idea immediately. Hilda is still hearing noises, even though the house looks so different, and starts to think she is hallucinating as she 'sees' her grandma and even her Dad!! You Definitely need to read this fabulous tale, sure to keep you totally engrossed until the explosive end!!!
Refreshing and so enjoyable. It was really difficult for me to put this book down once I started it as I was so invested in the characters. Immediately pulled in by young Hilda and Charlotte and a haunted house. The devastation of the death of their father. Hilda's feelings of guilt carried into adulthood. Her mother's conviction for the crime. The transition to 20 years later is smooth and natural.
Now adults, Hilda and Charlotte have stayed close, depending on each other through the years. Both married and Charlotte with children. Their mother, a victim of early Alzheimer's is being released. Hilda and her husband have the opportunity to travel to New Zealand, take care of her mother and buy, remodel and flip their next house.
Hilda's reuniting with her mother is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Unbeknownst to Hilda her former home has been moved from it's original site and her husband buys it. Is it still haunted? Four people died in this house. Hilda's father, her uncle and her grandparents. And one of them is angry!
In moments of lucid thought Hilda's mother mentions things that opens the door for more questions. Was her mother innocent of her father's death....or a serial killer who has killed more than once? Is her mother's friend Neil really trying to help, or does he have some devious plan?
Will the tension in the house tear Hilda and Pete apart?
There's so much to love about this book that I wish I could share. Definitely stands out as one of my favorite reads of 2020. Highly recommended.
I found this a little disappointing in comparison to the author’s other books that I’ve read. For one thing, it was written very simply, not much above the fifth grade reading level. It reads as though it is young adult fiction. I understand that protagonist Hilda is a child when her story starts but her voice doesn’t become more sophisticated later on when she is an adult. I find myself at odds with the glowing reviews I have read for other reasons also. The book is advertised as being about the supernatural yet I found this to be a minor aspect, with no real creepiness present. At all. Hilda has a rather superficial relationship with her husband and cannot tell that he is shady. After she is betrayed by her husband she forgives him in spite of his lame excuses. Maybe Hilda just wasn’t very bright. I don’t know. This book just didn’t work for me.
To date, I am a Netta Newbound virgin and went into this book completely blind and on recommendation alone. In the Indie world, this can be a dangerous mission to undertake but on this occasion, I am overjoyed to say I devoured the book from start to finish, and simply could not put it down. Without giving the plot away, tragic family circumstances see two young girls shipped off to England from their native New Zealand. Many years later, Hilda, the older of the two returns to NZ with her husband in tow wanting to reconnect with a family member. Her husband wants to buy a fixer-upper to live in and sell on for profit. Sounds simple, but not everything is as it seems. A strange sequence of events turns what could be an average whodunnit into something quite magical and sprinkled with the supernatural. I loved it, but that isn't to say Ms. Newbound didn't stretch believability somewhat. She took liberties switching between the two genres, albeit seamlessly. A gamble, you might think, but one that paid off handsomely. The ending I did not guess, which is a rarity for me-kudos to the author. She may consider my jaw picked up from the floor. Well-written, fast-paced once the story hit it's stride, uniquely plotted and with characters I found endearing and likeable. A jolly good read, which presents me with quite the conundrum; what book from Ms. Newbound should I read next? MINA CAULDWELL x
Charlotte and Hilda leave their childhood home in New Zealand for the UK when their Mum is arrested for the murder of their Dad. 20 years later, Hilda and her husband, Pete go to New Zealand as Hilda’s Mum is being released into her care as she has dementia. Charlotte has to stay in the UK as she has young children to look after. Hilda and Petes plan is to buy a property to do up over a year and sell if they decide to move back to the UK.
Some parts of the story did cause chills down my spine! The story had a good plot with great characters and was fast paced from the start. I really did not see that ending, it completely threw me!
We follow a married couple, going off to New Zealand. The wife used to live there with the family. Now she wants to see if the old family home, is still there.
They pick her mum up from the prison, and she welcomes the couple. Her daughter is back!
I could continue, but would hate to ruin the story. Although, I will say, I wasn’t expecting that!
Absolutely outstanding! It drew me in from the start and I couldn’t read it quick enough! The plot and characters were brilliant. I enjoyed the ghost aspect, was not over done, it was believable! What can I say about the ending .... just incredible! Fantastic book which I most definitely recommend.
A great ghost story and crime book. Love how the author is able to tie everything together so well and it just goes to show you that a great story with great characters really makes the biggest of difference.
I don't often wright a review. This is none of the best books I have read is quite a long time . It is a bit scary at times . Very intriguing. I don't want to spoil anything for any one so that is all I will say. Read and enjoy
I read this book in one sitting that's how much I loved it. The author describes the Grand Junction house in such great detail I actually felt I'd physically been inside it. I was totally and utterly engrossed in the story, the characters and the house. One of my top reads this year.
Netta never fails me! She keeps me interested from the first page to the last and makes me mad at night when I become sleepy and have to put my Kindle up for the night.
Just when you think you are hating the right person, you find out ........ well, no spoilers from me. I'll just say I enjoyed this story and having seen photos of her house in New Zealand it made it very special.
I really enjoyed this story; a much slower pace than usual for Netta, but still just as intriguing, keeping me guessing throughout. I did not expect the twists that unfolded! Fabulous story with an ending I wasn't expecting.
