Wow, what a ride this was. Jim Heskett went to a lot of work to get the Micah Reed books put in chronological order and to make them continuous without breaking the rhythm. I bow to him for that. It was an incredible undertaking and was worth the effort, in my opinion.

I read all of the Micah Reed books as they were released and loved every one of them. To think I almost passed on reading the chronological edition makes me a little nauseous because I would've missed a spectacular--albeit long--read. That would've sucked.

As I read this edition, I was given a good look at Pug and Michael McBriar; their deep friendship, their successes and failures, their camaraderie, and even their fears and pain (and not just physical). In the first releases, Pug is mentioned from time to time and even one book has Pug as a main character. But it never hit me just how important he was to Michael/Micah until I read this book. Pug was important enough for Michael to take him into his new life as Micah Reed. Their friendship was that deep. I wished I had a friend who was as loyal and forgiving as Pug was with Michael.

Michael/Micah has done some bad things, often under the influence of alcohol. He did some dumb things while drunk. He drank until he blacked out and didn't remember anything that he'd done. I was getting impatient with him because no matter how hung over he was the next morning or how he woke up with unexplained cuts and bruises, he couldn't quit. I was grateful when he started going to AA and actually stuck with it. It changed him and it changed the course of his life and was an integral part of this series.

Micah is sort of a "Lonesome Loser". After he got into Witness Protection and moved to Denver, he was still introverted, still not good with people, still made mistakes (don't we all?), but he had an innate sense of justice and right and wrong. He always tried to help people and trouble found him most every time. He came close to death many times just to try to save someone else. He was lonely, not many friends other than Frank Mueller and later, Layne Parrish. He stuck to himself, tried to stay under the radar, and kept track of his beloved shoebox. I felt that as I read the books when the first came out, but as I read this particular book, it was flashing neon lights. He had nobody and was reluctant to ask anyone for help.

Maybe Olivia in Casino Cartel (Book 2) said it better:

Micah certainly was a charmer. On the doomed flight from Fresno, twisting into certain death, she’d almost felt safe in his embrace. Even with everything she knew about his past, she hadn’t considered his danger in the moment. That was the power of Micah Reed’s persuasiveness.

Even though sitting next to him on that airplane and the flirting had been done by design, the WitSec ex-criminal formerly known as Michael McBriar had a certain amount of appeal to him. A kind of socially awkward little boy cuteness. Mixed with that bad-boy dangerousness and manipulation, that made for a red-flagged-topped cocktail.
~~~
I think she was right. There is an appeal to him that's hard to explain.
(Bear with me. This is a long book and a lot happened.)
In Stone Deep (Book 5), I had to set the book down and have a good cry. I don't think Micah ever got over losing Pug and what he wrote on the rock had me nearly sobbing. I felt Micah's grief and his guilt. That scene was so well written. I was a wreck for a good half hour after reading that.
I was glad that Frank was taking care of Micah and they each had a deep respect for each other, but I was glad when Layne Parrish came into Micah's life, too. Shock Collar really opened the door for the Layne Parrish spinoff series, which is every bit as good as Micah Reed, but it is different.
Overall, this is a great book to watch the evolution of a character that goes from being a drug thug to a prisoner, to doing a stint with Witness Protection (he had a hard time with the transition), and eventually trying to fly right. I loved Micah Reed from the first book I read, which was Nailgun Messiah, and the series just got better and better with each book.
Now that I've read all the books again without stopping, I think I'm going to declare my favorite one of the series. I loved them all for their originality, different situations, and seeing Micah in all lights, but I'm going to choose Shock Collar as my most favorite.
Nine stories chronicling the maturation of Michael McBriar, shady operator in Oklahoma, into Micah Reed, skip tracer based in Denver, Colorado. Mikey and his friend Pug provide muscle for an organization, that they don't really understand, but which pays well. The work involves couriering and enforcement. Miiey is always fighting off a drunken night and not thinking too much about the work. After a few years, he and Pug begin to question their activities and the organization they work for. This leads to a confrontation and a change in their lives. After a violent exchange, Mikey is recruited by the FBI and becomes an informant, taking a deal to save his and his family's lives. A change is in the offing. After the trial, Mikey goes into Witness Protection and to a short sentence in a federal prison. He assumes the name Micah Reed, still drinking prison wine and getting into trouble. He befriends his cellmate while making enemies of other inmates. Barely surviving his stint, he gets relocated to Denver and begins working as a skip tracer for a former policeman, Frank Mueller, now a bail bondsman. Still fighting his alcoholism, Michael is not very effective, getting into trouble because his plans rarely work cleanly because of extenuating circumstances and because of his past. At the urging of his boss, Micah enrolls in AA and begins fighting his addiction. This fight drives his work habits and his ability to function. Even so, he begins to make progress. Unfortunately, Micah is unable to forget his family and his past so those things begin to affect his life. He drops out of Witness Protection and tries to go it alone. He tries to reunite with his system only to get involved with a cult from which he must extricate her. Then he gets involved with one large scale criminal activity after another, handling them in his own way, but realizing that actions have consequences and his result in many deaths, Are the deaths his fault or are they just things that happen because of other person's choices. The nine stories play together nicely and give depth depth to Micah's character. These stories are exciting with many thrilling components. Definitely a good read (but not all in one night).
Note: I received this as an ARC from the author and am freely providing this review.
This is one of the best box sets I have gotten ahold of in a long time! I have read all of the Layne Parrish books, so I was very familiar with Mr. Heskett's writing. And, truth be told, I have several of these books on my Kindle, but somehow never got around to reading them. I'm almost glad I didn't because reading them in chronological order was the best. It was so cool to see Michael become Micah and the growth he experienced on that journey. I will admit to being let down when I finished; not because there was anything bad, but because I was sad it was ending. It felt as if a very good friend had moved away.
These stories are so well-written. The characters are believable and three dimensional (even though hopefully not someone you know personally), the action is face-paced and almost non-stop, and yet through all of the "shoot 'em up" action, Mr. Heskett manages to create a character in Micah who displays feelings and weaknesses, something that can be lacking in a lot of action heroes.
I also thoroughly enjoyed seeing where Layne Parrish came from. As I said, I read his books first so the later books in this series provided an interesting look into who Layne was and his relationship with Micah.
I highly recommend this series for anyone looking for a solid, dependable good guy who is far from perfect and admits his faults every day and continues to try to do better. Micah Reed is definitely one of those guys.
Street smart kid who puts his nose in other people's business - 4 stars
Multiple book tale from college drop-out to Sinaloa drug cartel enforcer, witness protection graduate, recovering alcoholic and a multi-year job as skip tracer.
Micah Reed is the new Government given name of a reformed hard drinking street fighter. We accompany him as a drug cartel enforcer, see him in a Federal detention facility (jail) and then barely gets his life in order by dragging himself out of alcohol addiction.
Life on the fringe is not pretty. Drugs and alcohol are the backdrop of a young man's crawl out of the drug underworld in Oklahoma into the barely legal and still rough underbelly of society in Colorado.
There is a lot of fighting, gunfire, knife action and even a massacre before the last book finishes. If you can stomach violence and want character development delivered in short, action packed chapters with enough twists to keep a pretzel factory going, you will like this collection.
There are a few female fighters but for the most part, this is about a tough guy who has 14 years of alcohol addiction before he is 28.
Micah carries around a Star Wars action figure, Boba Fett, that he talks to.
My favorite book is a tale of Micah spending four weeks in a rehab facility making believe that he has just given up alcohol even though he has been clean for about a year.
I love the Micah Reed books so naturally, the chance to get them all in one place and all sorted out in the order they actually happened was something I just couldn't resist. Micah isn't your ordinary detective. He's seen it all, screwed up more often than lots of people get chances and muddled through, usually to come out more or less on the side of the "good guys".
If you're looking for exciting, thrill a minute action stories that will make you smile as often as they tug at your heartstrings, you'll love this book. It takes you from Micah's early days as a driver and all round thug for the Sinaloa cartel in a different place with a different name through prison to a new career as a skip-tracer and private detective and I'm pretty sure that by the time you're finished, you'll love Micah Reed nearly as much as I do.
This set introduces and follows Micah Reed thru his transition to Denver.
The story reads slowly thru the first year, but once you get there then it is hard to put the book down. Micah goes through a lot of incidence after he leaves the Witness Protection Program.
The character interface between Micah and Frank plus the introduction of Layne Parish are well done. All of the action is well portrayed and when you read the last story, you are left wanting more.
I enjoyed the story immensely and highly recommend this author for this and his other characters.
Micah Reed started out as Michael McBriar. This series in chronological order tells how he got started in a life of a crime and where he is now. Each individual story in and of itself is a fascinating read but put in it’s correct makes it absolutely fantastic book to read ! I did in fact write a review for each of the books in this series, that is how great each one is. Buy this book, grab your favorite snacks, get your favorite beverage(s) and sit down for one of the best times you will ever have from reading a book.
Micah Reed is great guy that has made MANY mistakes and bad choices. You can’t help but love him! I have previously read all of the Micah Reed books, but when given the chance to read them in chronological order, I jumped at it! It was great to follow his journey from start to finish. I recommend all of the Micah Reed books by Jim Heskett. This box set is a convenient and wonderful opportunity to get to know Micah.
