I think this is the best book about death I've been reading so far. Other books mostly covered death as something happen only to old people or they who had a terminal illness, or they mainly talked about death in certain religion without seeing other religion's view. But I found what I wanted in this book: about Death from many perspective, young and old, fear and acceptance, religion and non-religion perspective. And it was brought with a smooth flow of words. I really enjoyed reading this.
A very nice and open-minding read. And if you want to make your friends creeped out? Just clutches this book everywhere. It works wonder. Since I got almost one reaction from my friends, "Why in Hell you bring that kind of book everywhere, Yuu??"
Somewhat dated (my edition was a 1976 reprint), but these issues are still with us in various forms today. Hinton covers the stages of dying, choices which must be made by loved ones close to the dying person, and treatment of bereavement after the final breath of the deceased. These issues are not likely to go away when the aging population is increasing (in the United States and elsewhere), health care is expensive and may not always be available, we now have legal assisted suicide in several states, and people persist in bad habits that bring about untimely death. A thoughtful read.
