Did you know the Hawkeye State got its nickname from Chief Black Hawk of the Sauk tribe? Or that D is for Des Moines, the capital with the golden dome? Or that Iowa is bordered on each side by navigable rivers, the Missouri marks the western border and the Mississippi forms its eastern border. H is for Hawkeye presents these and many other interesting facts about the great state of Iowa.
What a delightful book! I love that the stories which correspond with each letter of the alphabet are filled with pertinent AND fun facts about Iowa. This book could be such a learning tool. The illustrations are quite beautiful and fully capture the spirit and charm of my home state. (I wouldn't be biased, now, would I?)
"C" isn't for Corn...but "K" is for kernel. A teeny tiny boo boo in my estimation, otherwise a lovely little book. Oh, and yes, Lucy, "J" is for John Wayne. :)
My son and I enjoy reading about the states through these books. Each letter has a short description of the state for younger kids. And there is a longer description for older children and adults on the same page. The illustrated pages are beautifully done.
This is a wonderful book for people of all ages to learn about Iowa! It has nice poems for preschoolers, additional information for older readers, and a quiz at the end!
