Better Than This is different than any of Beth Flynn's other books. It's not quite as raw and gritty, but it still has that addictive quality and writing that pulls you in. It's also got just enough suspense/twists and turns that comes from Beth's brilliant mind to keep you fully engaged and wow you by the end.

Barbie is a 52 year old doctor who has just moved back to her childhood home. After a divorce (that included her sister seducing/sleeping with her husband) Barbie needed a fresh start. Home doesn't always bring the best memories, but Barbie is determined to start fresh and move past the past.

Barbie is doing pretty well, until she runs into a new orderly at the facility near her home. Jake is a dead-ringer for her first love, Kenny, who passed away in prison after getting into some trouble in his youth. Barbie never truly got over Kenny and seeing someone who could be his twin is hard for her at first. It brings back a lot of memories and revelations.
Jake had the appearance and self-assuredness of a criminal, but the manners of a gentleman. He was an enigma, a puzzle. And I'd yet to find the missing piece. The questions was, would that piece complete us or destroy us.

The more time Barbie spends with Jake, the more she likes him. It takes her a while to warm  up to him, but he slowly starts to steal her heart. Jake has a rough exterior, an even rougher past, but he's a reformed bad boy. He's kind, giving, and truly cares a lot about Barbie. I loved the two of them together and rooted for them from the start. But I knew. I knew there was a secret, a twist. And I thought I had it figured out, but I was surprised when it came to.

I love that the characters in this story are more mature. I love a good YA/NA read, but variety is the spice of life and sometimes it's nice to read about different age groups. My favorite thing about reading a book by Beth Flynn is you never know what you're going to get. But she ties every faucet of the story in so effortlessly by the end, gah! Her writing is just spectacular and I can't get enough.

If you're looking for a sweet, small town romance with a bit of suspense and lots of heart, pick this one up. I truly enjoyed it and read it in one night, it was that good!
"Can you love somebody like me, Barbie doll?" His mouth was set in a hard line as he waited for my answer. "It's too late, Jake. I already do.”

I am in awe of Beth’s writing!

She has the knack to drag you into her stories all with an economy of words. The lady means business! She is efficient, does not use unnecessary flourishes but you can see, smell, feel everything!!! Truly impressive 😊

Second thing that I adore about that author and Better than This is no exception: she is a mastermind plotter!

Beth begins slowly, lulling us into thinking it’s a simple story, stand alone and all. Then slowly she leaves clues here and there, like bread crumbs to follow. And we realize there is a broader picture. Something big! Something we never thought of. Once you finish all the lose ends are nicely tied up with a pretty ribbon bow on top!

Let’s demonstrate here!

This story began softly, with a woman in her early fifties, Barbara Jean of Barbie who surprised her younger sister with her husband. Of course as every self-respecting woman, she left him but truth be told, their marriage was dead for a long time.

Just another story like it happens unfortunately to many women.

What better place to heal than your childhood small town right?
A sleepy little hamlet in the northern end of South Carolina with one intersection and very few residents.”

She will bask in the support of her best friend Darlene.

And when you read about Darlene you will want a Darlene in your life!
The friend who married Barry, her high school sweetheart, and was still over the moon in love after more than thirty years. The woman who raised five children, only one of them biological. The same person who welcomed me back with open arms and treated me like I’d never left. Darlene was a woman who loved unconditionally and forgave wholeheartedly.”

Barbie is busy rebuilding her family home and life when the disruptive element of the story happens or rather rides by…

A biker with a long braid, short silver beard riding alongside her house on a bike with a singular drawing on his bike… Said drawing will provoke Barbie’s ire and disgust.

She is usually so level headed but so much happened to her for months and now this was the last straw!

Barbie’s shock is great when she discovers that said biker goes by Jake and is in fact the new caregiver at Hampton House, a privately owned assisted facility.

How could such “disgusting pig” be trusted with patients?

Yet everyone especially women love him! He is caring, kind, patient, hard working …and sexy!

As a young nurse said of Jake :
“He’s old enough to be my daddy.” A mischievous smile broke out on her face before she added, “And I’d let him spank my bottom any day. He is one fine-looking specimen.”

I just KNOW that you are already swooning over Jake too! 😊

Yet Barbie is not easily swayed especially as Jake had a prison stunt thirty years ago and looks like her childhood crush Kenny. He could be his twin! She is determined to prove he is not to be trusted!

After having read his hospital and prison report (how unprofessional) and talked with Jake Barbie is forced to reconsider her opinion. Jake is no Kenny and he truly is a gentleman.

Written like this, it all seems like one more love story in the making in an ocean of love stories right?

That’s where you’d be wrong!!!!

I told you that Beth is a master plotter. Between discovering secrets about her past, trying to get rid of her awful younger sister and discovering Jake’s own past you’ll get an intricate and brilliant story. A mix between romance and mystery.

Last thing that I absolutely want to mention about “Better than This” : the characters are in their fifties!

It was SO REFRESHING to read a love story about more mature characters. Because let’s face it, that’s not because you are fifty or more that you suddenly don’t deserve love anymore nor can have a healthy sexual life! Even with hot flashes and all Barbie is an attractive woman and Jake has females of all ages swooning over his biceps and tattoo and blue, blue eyes and …

Now if you are a teenager or under thirty, you’ll possibly be “Eeew” because once in their forties or fifties people are old for you LOL But coming from a woman in her forties I can tell you that it was such a treat!

I could go on and on about that story.

I could rave about the main characters being both compassionate and attractive.

I could talk about second chance when you’ve been to prison or when you’ve been married a first time.

I could also talk about blood not making a family as “Fancy”, Barbie’s sister was awful but having friends like sweet and no nonsense Darlene is worth gold.

I could….

But I will stop here just telling you to READ THAT AMAZING STORY! Oh and even if it is part of the Nine Minutes universe and has some really welcome cameos about the past characters and heroes, it can totally be read as a stand alone.

So, what are you waiting for?

Have you read Beth Flynn Nine Minutes Series? Are you a fan? Love stories above forty yes or eww?
Thanks for reading!

BETTER than Words...BETTER than Thoughts...BETTER than the Best. This book levels the field where Jake is standing shoulder to shoulder with Grizz in charisma and charm. His loyalty and passion for his woman brings alive memories of early Grizz.
THIS is how you tell a Tale. it's not just a story, it's a ballad, a saga, that continues to be woven on the loom. Ever so often Beth uses a different colour yarn , knotting and tying up the loose threads. When finished, you step back and the entire tapestry comes into view. It’s a vibrant and alive story, powerful like a Harley and visually stunning as a Radiant Orchid

description

All the different coloured threads are there because Beth put them there for a reason. They have a purpose, trail of clues for what is to come. Every tiny detail, every minute prop, every subtle sentiment is part of something bigger than your eye can see. Together they make a flawless mural, astounding, mind-boggling and enthralling
Beautifully penned and painstakingly detailed, this book will take you back to Floridian times of MC club only now the setting is Pumpkin Rest, a sleepy hamlet in the northern part of South Carolina.

description

it's a joy to go back and meet the oldies and ogle at the newbies.
Beth has created a wondrous world of words that has ensnared me and held me captive ever since I met Grizz and kit in book 1. The ever growing family tree sprouts new branches of storyline and I get a birds eye view of Pritchard Farms and adjoining childhood home of Barbie.
READ EVERY WORD CAREFULLY....go over it twice, soak every syllable, etch every alphabet on your soul. You'll need them to recall when the secrets tumble out and scatter on the board like pins. You'll need them to connect the dots.

Beth introduces to us Dr . Barbara Jean Anderson "Barbie". She's just lost her bearings and lost her way in the world. But there's always home to come to, isn't it. To heal, rethink and regroup her life
Home is in Pumpkin Rest, on her inherited land she tries to gather her shattered heart and life back in some semblance of sanity.
She's in her "Fourth Quarter" of life...in her fifties
“I’ve never been a big fan of football, but even I know the fourth quarter is where all the excitement happens.”

description

And excitement lands in her life with a thump!
Jake Chambers is deliciously masculine, compassionate and generous. Alpha protector and caregiver, it's no surprise I fell for him....I mean Barbie falls for him😉
There's her best friend Darlene who's the voice of reason and logic in her life, cause God Knows her heart loses all sensibility in proximity of Jake but who can blame her
"Tall and masculine, heavily tattooed, blue eyed biker,If sizzling whiskey poured over ice gave off an aroma, that’s how Jake smelled. Hot and masculine, but sharp and clean."
And then I fainted!!!

description

The story has so many hidden doors, every door leads to a secret, every secret leads to a surprise so big, I had my jaw perpetually on the floor!
"Time doesn’t heal all wounds. Sometimes they just scab over.
And not all the answers we seek might be found in this lifetime"

Just deep dive into the saga that started with Nine Minutes. some characters visit, some jump in midst and vanish like ghosts of connections past.
The story flips & upends several times. All characters follow roads less traveled, but come back home anyways.

description

"what's so special about Nine Minutes?'"
That's where it all started ❤️
There's something to be said about how earthy these people are, Beth has made them from salt of the earth, they belong in this world, they feel real and mine. Every book brings up old memories and emotions get a new lease, I can't seem to get enough of them. This series has been a generous lover, giving and giving till my heart is full to capacity.
Thoughtfully provocative, brazen and evocative, there is gentlemanliness and passion side by side. This story rumbles and thunders into your heart like a beat up old truck and just parks there. I'm still hungover, sitting on the patio in Red Adirondack chair, sipping moonshine and playing with Henry and Lady.
I refuse to come out of the story....let me be and leave me with my tribe.....I'M FINALLY HOME!

This amazing book just reinforces why Beth Flynn is one of my favorite authors. When reading the summary, you may think this is just another story in the long list of books about a scorned woman escaping to a small town to restart her life and then meeting a hot mysterious man and falling in love. Yes, I love that trope, but this story didn’t feel contrived or “tropey” at all. This story was unique and I was hanging on every word. I absolutely loved that the main characters were in their 50’s. There’s not enough of them in contemporary romance. So a big shout out to Beth for that.

And like with all Beth Flynn books, I’m so sad it’s over. Even though the other characters in the Nine Minutes trilogy didn’t make an appearance, they were talked about. And since the Nine Minutes trilogy is one of my all time favorites, I will never get enough of those old characters.

If you haven’t read Beth Flynn yet and saw that this is a “spin-off” novel to another series, I still think this is a good book to start with. It doesn’t give anything away about that series. But you should definitely still read Nine Minutes. It amazing.

This latest gem by Beth Flynn is exquisite. Better Than This is a slow-burn kind of romance featuring two incredible characters in Barbie and Jake. They found each other at a time of their lives when both were simply trying to start anew in the small town of Pumpkin Rest. Becoming neighbors should have been easy and uncomplicated but as the story progresses there is nothing simple about the undeniable chemistry these two have together.

A love story between two 50 somethings! Thank you Beth Flynn for showing the world that the 4th quarter is all kinds of wonderful! I couldn't help but grin over and over again as Barbie and Jake navigate their new-found relationship in a world where youth tries to reign supreme. These two have it all going on even while trying to come to grips with their individual pasts that seem to want intrude in on their burgeoning romance.
There is a ton of mystery surrounding Jake and it's hard for Barbie to keep her head in the game as the late love of her former life keeps messing with her heart and the man she is falling hard for.

This is such a cleverly crafted book and the way Flynn ties all the loose ends together is beyond brilliant. I was rooting hard for Jake and Barbie to find a forever kind of love with one another because they are genuinely good people and all that they endure should only strengthen their bond. Secrets and heartbreaking revelations threw me for a loop more than once but the way Flynn guides this journey, I'm still amazed at how it all turns out. Barbie and Jake and the secondary characters who compliment this story perfectly were in the best possible hands with a gifted author who writes from the heart.

This is my new favorite Beth Flynn book and one I'll definitely reread more than once. It spoke to me on a level that made my soul sing and I am forever grateful for having had the honor of reading it.

Better Than This deserves all the stars and more!!!
Bravo.

Better Than This by Beth Flynn is one of those books that seeps into your soul.

It’s one of those books that has such a strong and unique storyline, with such phenomenal and impactful characters, that it leaves you wanting to bury yourself in their emotions and mysteries.

I love that Flynn is an absolute master at weaving a story that keeps you on your toes. You’ll be reading and wanting to message her a thousand times with theories and suspicions. (BTW, she is completely silent, and won’t give you an inch of a hint!) lol.

And what I love most of all, is that these characters touch each of us in different ways. We all will find connections with different characters and want to immerse ourselves in their emotions.

This book can definitely be read as a stand-alone. But I love the glimpses of characters we’ve all grown to love as fans of Beth’s Nine Minutes Series.

Moonshine & Blueberry Pancakes!!

Wow!! First of all I love the fact that Barbie and Jake are mature. In there 50’s you don’t see that often. There is drama but mostly it’s just a slow and steady romance. The Nine Minute books are all unique not your run of the mill romance but oh so good!! This was a great edition. Keep up the great work Ms Flynn.

Absolutely brilliant!! Can’t say enough about this book and the author. She has a way with words and her ability to weave details throughout the story and tie them all together is remarkable. Barbie and Jakes story was beautiful and although I wanted to devour the book, I forced myself to take my time because I really didn’t want it to end. It’s that good!!

Can you believe I’d give a romance book 4 stars without explicit on-page sex?? I know, right??

BUT… it was an engaging story, not only the relationship development but also the mystery. I must admit that toward the end I was struggling with why Kenny’s life got so much page time. PUT THE GUY BEHIND YOU, I kept shouting in my mind to the heroine.

And then I find out why.

It sure was convoluted, how everything happened. But it did get tied up in the end. Took the epilogue to do it.

I picked this up because of the mature MCs. I find that, with age, I enjoy more adult behavior in my romances. Hence, I hate YAs with a passion.

Wish there was more sex on page. You still felt the attraction, but don’t get the details.

Not sure I’ll read another by this author tho. I need me some passionate sex in my romances! 😋

It's a well-known fact I am a huge fan of Beth Flynn's Nine Minutes and all the books that followed. This story is no exception as she takes us through the journey of life and a second chance to find love again. Barbie and Jake have a rough start - not quite enemies to lovers. Let's just say Barbie isn't a fan of his choice of artwork.

But it's the fact that Barbie can look beyond the outer covers to connect with Jake that feels real and true. I connected to the character's journey. Once again, Mrs. Flynn takes us on a journey where all is not black and white. The story unfolds in its due time. Each turn of the chapter gives you deeper hope for their HEA.

So a couple of things... 1) Why did it take me so long to finish? I got caught up in the world of alpha/beta reading so reading for enjoyment took a pause. That should speak to the testament of Beth's writing. Never complicated or obtuse where I'd get lost if I let it sit for a few days. For me, this just prolonged my time in Pumpkin Rest which it was like coming home.

2) Yes, it's a seasoned romance - but don't let this deter you. If you are seasoned yourself, it gives you the satisfaction that "yes, we are not dead yet in the fourth quarter of our lives". If you are younger, gives you the insight you won't be dead when you are over 40.

3) I didn't put it in the MC shelf. Well, because it touches on it but not heavily into the world. I know reader friends who have shied away from my recommendation of her past books because of no interest in the trope. But NOW you have a chance to read the brilliance of Beth's writing.

This is on KU so pick it up to read right away. Don't KU? Buy it anyhow.

4.5 Fourth Quarter Stars!!!

My goodness, just closed the kindle on this one... My mind is spinning... Yet again a book from this author that is woven so tightly that the quality of workmanship outshines in this beautiful story.

Barbie has moved back to Pumpkin Rest, the place where she grew up. A successful trauma surgeon back in the city she left, now working in a doctors office in town treating all the locals. Hoping to get back on track after a failed marriage, she is back where it all started for her.

Jake is the love of my life ;-) and when he rolls past Barbie's house the first time, its a memory that will be hard to erase! Who paints that on their HARLEY!!! LOL. But anyway, Jake sure makes an impression with Barbie. One that I don't think Barbie herself was ready for.

Frenita on the other hand. I've got a couple cans of Whoop A** I'd like to open up on her. Barbie's only relative and it had to be Frenita. Good golly, to have a sister that did the things Frenita does to Barbie... They'd be digging a grave to bury Frenita before the week was over! Deep breath in... Slow breath out... Family can come and go.... I'm praying that Frenita finds a man and sticks with him so that she is forever out of Barbie's life!!

I am a proud member of the fourth quarter and can testify right along with Jake and Barbie that this statement is 100% correct!!!
"The fourth quarter is where all the excitement happens."

Read this book word for word...unravel each and every detail. Its all there in the writing... Just waiting to be uncovered!

Beth Flynn has done it again and given us another fantastic story. This time, she has given us, mature characters that are in their 4th quarter of life – just loved this term. Dr Barbie Anderson, age 52 is a Trauma surgeon and recently single. She has come back to her home town to regroup and assess her life. What she did not factor in, was some old wounds coming to the surface. When she meets the new man in town, who has the entire female population of Pumpkin Rest falling over themselves, she feels betrayed and angry at him. His name is Jake Chambers (age 55) and he is the spitting image of her first love Kenny, who left her without a trace. The story of Kenny her first true love still haunts her and part of her takes her anger out on Jake. Jake shows her so much patience and he eventually becomes her friend and helps her to overcome her past, by helping uncover some of the truths. But when Jakes own secrets start to emerge can Barbie handle them and is she prepared for the truth that could shatter them. This is a fantastic story, with so many past secrets and betrayals. The story of first love, that will haunt you, and the story of a second chance. Overall a brilliant read with a few plot twists. I had worked out most of the plot line but it was still a great romance and I loved the slow burn and fell in love with Jake. Ms Flynn has a wonderful way of telling a story and this is one I would highly recommend.

5 stars for this one! where do I begin, I didn’t know what to expect going into this book because these were characters I didn’t think I knew.
Within the first chapter I was hooked I loved that these characters were older, the suspense is amazing, the plot twists are so totally Beth’s way!

Original review: A Novel Glimpse

★ ★ ★ ★ ½
Before I begin my review of Better Than This, I feel the need to point people in the right direction if they are not familiar with Beth Flynn’s writing. Beth Flynn has an insanely good dark romance / psychological thriller trilogy called Nine Minutes. It’s really the place you need to start when reading her books. Every book that comes after the original Nine Minutes has been slowly revealing itself since then. Better Than This doesn’t exactly continue storylines from the original trilogy, but there are some surprise references to people and events from it that build to make this book what it is. I highly recommend starting with Nine Minutes and reading Ms. Flynn’s books in the order they were released. Now for my review…

Better Than This had a slightly different feel than Beth Flynn’s other novels. This one didn’t jump around in time as much. There were a few scenes that took us to the past, but the majority of the book was in the present and focused on Barbie and Jake’s romance. Barbie and Jake’s romance differed from others in this series because it was a more mature romance. The characters are in their 50’s. It’s not very often I come across a romance with characters this age that feels fresh and not antiquated. The characters had moments where they felt the things you feel when you grow older, but they also had a youthfulness to their thoughts. Getting older myself, I liked this because you still feel like you’re young at heart even when your body isn’t. Barbie and Jake’s romance was also more of a slow burn than the other novels in this series. Given their age, that was surprising. I liked the reasoning behind it.

Now that I’ve said Better Than This was mostly romance based, I need to backtrack a little on that statement. If you have read Beth Flynn’s books, you know that it’s not all about the romance. I probably shouldn’t have said it was. There’s always a gigantic mystery to unravel. That’s another thing that made this book (and all of her others) so special. I was constantly playing detective. Each little hint had me thinking back to things that had been said or done. Usually it just left me with more questions than answers, but it was so much fun and kept me glued to this book.

When I started reading Better Than This I was very curious to find out how Barbie and Jake tied into the original Nine Minutes Trilogy. They weren’t characters I remembered, but there are so many characters I could have easily forgotten them. I kept waiting for some clue to connect them. In true Beth Flynn fashion, things took a while to come together. That’s what’s so amazing about her writing, though. Every little twist, turn, and revelation gives you some new piece of information to fit together. The result is a fabulous puzzle and a huge pay off. I definitely got one of those with this book. Some of my lingering questions from previous books were answered and it was utterly satisfying. There are still more questions now, but I’m hoping Beth Flynn will keep the spin-offs coming and the next book will answer them.

it is really hard to gather my thoughts about this book and write them down, but i‘m going to try.
i honestly can’t tell if i liked this book or not. it was great writing and i loved jake. but barbie annoyed me. she was obsessed with this boy she was friends with from age 9-13. i get thinking about him if he was missing and never to be found... but she knew he ended up in prison and died. yet everything was about him 40 years later just because she lost her virginity to him and was apparently in love with him (at 13, mind you, wtf).
also, she was a little judgemental sometimes and asked so many dumb questions but never asked the important questions.
i can bet that every person reading this book expected the plot twist where jake was actually kenny. but towards the end of the book jake admitted other plot twists that had you sitting back and think, “oh, he is actually jake, not kenny.”
so i believed jake was jake and was happy that barbie finally moved past kenny and appreciated this wonderful guy she had.
then we get to the epilogue and expect happy marriage moments just to find out that jake was actually kenny. the author did such a good job before this convincing me that jake was jake. i can’t tell if waiting until the very end of the book to drop that bomb was brilliant or annoying. i think both.
anyway... like i said i can’t tell how i felt about this book. which is weird and very unusual. i always either hate, dislike, like or love a book but i can’t tell what category this book falls in. it wasn’t boring and i didn’t dislike it, but i can’t say that i liked barbie and what the book was about and the bomb at the end.
i’ve never been so conflicted about a book before and the reason i’m rating it three stars is because it’s in the middle.

Beth Flynn will always be an author that I one-click for! And “Better Than This” did not disappoint me! In true Beth writing style, she kept the twists and turns going throughout the book, keeping me glued to my seat. So much so, that I read it in one sitting!

Dr. Barbie Anderson (age 52) and Jake Chambers (age 55) are in their “4th quarter” of life. I have to say that I loved the fact that these characters were older and more mature. It kind of gives me (age 53) hope to find my HEA, "Because everyone knows the fourth quarter is where the real action is."

After divorcing her husband, Barbie Anderson decides to return to her hometown of Pumpkin Rest. She needs time to heal, so she can move on to the next chapters in her life, but memories (some good – some bad) from her childhood are playing tricks on her mind and heart.

Jake Chambers is an ex-con biker who is now an orderly at Hampton House and a doppelganger for Kenny, Barbie’s first love. Jake knows that he needs to take it slow with her and let her come to terms with her past. He is dealing with some secrets of his own, and he is not so sure how to deal with them!

Love. love, love this story and the slow burn between these two characters! Darlene was a hoot and I loved her no b.s. personality. She was an added bonus to this story line!

Highly recommend this book!

There’s nothing #Better than reading a story with likable characters, but when you find a story with likable, extraordinary ordinary characters, then you hit the jackpot!
This is what I discovered as I read Better Than This!
The author offered the reader a refreshing departure from other romances in that the characters are older, more mature, and unapologetically flawed.
The writing was flawless, the story flowed nicely and the characters evolved slowly and meticulously.
Barbie and Jake’s story was one I wanted to devour as soon as it hit my kindle. However, this is a story that requires patience and control to read and capture every word.
Suspenseful, and passionate, as this complicated small town story evolves, there are hints of past and present connections making the story of Barbie and Jake more intriguing and compelling.
This story slayed me as the emotions Barbie is forced to face from her past, made the story a unique kind of gritty and her character so realistic and relatable.
Is it redemption or second chances?
You must read and decide!
A complete standalone, the added bonus was the walkthrough of characters from Nine Minutes.

A lot was going on in this one and at first it seemed like there was only the barest connection to the Nine Minute books. It isn't til the end that you can see how many strings there are.

This book is a very slow burn and there are some very valid reasons for it. Reasons that when the truth comes out seems bad at first, but later are ok.

For a dead man, Kenny's presence looms large through out the book. We have the puppy love, the friends who's live is crap that depend on each other, the leaving the other behind, the stuck together growing into something beyond friends and the one that you can never forget. Relationships on many levels which affected them all deeply.

By the end of the book, with all the secrets out, the past addressed, you can see that Barbie and Jake are going to be just fine, that finally they are where they are supposed to be, with the person they should be with, living a happy life.

Beth Flynn has this magical way of weaving words so that almost instantly you are transported into another world, this book was no exception. Barbie and Jake are older characters with some life experiences to share, theirs's is a slow burn romance that develops as they open up to one another. It makes a pleasant change to have some more mature characters falling in love.

Lots of twists and turns in this story as more secrets are revealed, and some interesting side characters: Frenita, the spoilt little sister with a nasty streak; and Darlene, the sweet, feisty, funny and loyal best friend.

There are only very minor references to the Nine Minutes Trilogy so even if you haven't read those you will still enjoy this story as a standalone.

Love story interwoven with the Nine Minutes theme.
The first part of the book reads more like a small town mature Romance but the interwoven Nine Minutes story is intriguing enough to keep me flipping pages. I enjoyed the characters and where the story went. The story unfolds two different ways - strong enough that I totally bought how the second half unfolded.

I can’t wait to see what’s next from this author !

Wow… Beth Flynn has once again delivered an outstanding novel which leaves her readers with soaring hearts and breathless. She delivers something more extraordinary than a passionate love story. She captures the complete human spirit in all of it’s beautiful imperfection. Her characters capture the imagination and remind the readers that’s it’s okay to be human.

Beth takes her readers back to Pumpkin Rest, South Carolina. The sleepy little town with only one intersection containing a gas station / grocery store and diner. Pumpkin Rest is a close knit community who have known each other all their lives. Dr. Barbie Anderson has returned to her childhood home to heal her from broken heart and rebuild her shattered life. She’s wise enough to return to the place where old friends are true friends and life is peaceful. She’s ready for a simple life. She’s ready to heal and move on to the next chapter in her life.

As it turns out, her return to Pumpkin Rest is anything but simple. It seems someone from her past has returned as well. A person who has been dead for years. The boy who shattered her heart when she was a young girl. Kenny Pritchard left thirty-nine years ago and never returned. He died in prison so how can he be riding past her house on his motorcycle? How can he be working at the Hampton House helping care for patients? Her mind and heart were playing tricks on her. How can Kenny be alive when she read his autopsy?

The truth is that this man is not Kenny, he is Jake Chambers. She refuses to let this man who looks like a criminal and the love of her life get close to her wounded soul. She is determined to understand why this man is trying to insert himself in Kenny’s old life. Why is he trying to befriend her when she clearly wants nothing to do with him? Her mind is telling her to stay far away and her heart is pushing her closer.

Life has a different destiny for both Jake and Barbie. It doesn’t matter if you are young and experiencing love for the first time or if you are past your prime and finding a love to spend the rest of your life with. Love is forgiving. Love is healing. Love is a miracle.

Pumpkin Rest is not the ordinary sleepy small town. It holds a multitude of secrets. Secrets that have destroyed lives for generations. Secrets that can still damage lives long after those who kept them are in their graves. Barbie and Jake have to choose how they deal with those secrets. Do they let the secrets tear them apart or do they let them bring them closer together?

WOW… Beth Flynn once again delivered the perfect story. There was the right amount of suspense, intrigue, and romance blended into this story which made it a page turner. I loved how she chose to feature seasoned, mature characters who have made their mistakes, made good and bad choices, and know what they want in life. I loved how she tied the Bear Family (past and present) into this story as well as the Nine Minute Trilogy. The connections were obscure but very familiar at the same time. It made me want to re-read all five books again. Not many authors do that to me. Every time I finish a Beth Flynn book I walk away feeling like I experienced every aspect of humanity. I feel like I witnessed a lifetime of friends and enemies finding the true meaning of love through forgiveness and acceptance. It’s very hard to put this concept into 375 pages when it takes a lifetime to achieve it.

Better Than This by Beth Flynn is a must read!

“I’ve loved you for as long as I can remember.”

It’s no secret that I will read any book Beth Flynn brings to life. Better Than This is so masterfully told and beautifully bold. A slow burning romance woven with intricate detail, mind-mesmerizing suspense, and second chances at love and life that rendered me awe-struck.

This riveting romance set in the Nine Minutes world entails a melt-worthy, all man of a hero and strong heroine who battle past demons as they bring each other back to life. A heroine and hero who are magic together. I loved Barbie and Jake’s journey of strength and trust woven in love with lots of melt-your-heart moments.

Better Than This is a slow burn that blasts through your heart— setting it ablaze—where you feel every flame igniting inside you. I felt everything! This romance is raw and real, sweet and sensual, and stirring and suspenseful. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!

I was a bit apprehensive going into this book because authors have a tendency to become repetitive in their characters and writing style after successful novels. They stick to similar themes and plots through series and spinoffs that all blur together essentially. I've loved everything that Beth has written so far, so I didn't want this book to be the one to change that. But, Beth Flynn has continued her streak and succeeded in writing another amazing book!

Having read every Beth Flynn novel, I will say that the theme of this story different in comparison to her other books (this is a slow burn, mature adult, second-chance romance). But, by no means was it less in its writing, content, and creativity. Beth is a genius who has a way of weaving in many small details throughout a book to create a beautiful story. This book was a breath of fresh air amongst this year's releases.

Better Than This was simply amazing! Beth always writes an emotionally charged, complex story and this one tops the list! Barbie and Jake are both heading into the "fourth quarter" of their lives and it was SO refreshing to read a story about a couple who are in their 50's and navigating the world of starting a relationship at this stage of their lives.

Barbie is a 52 year old doctor who has recently moved back to her childhood home in Pumpkin Rest, South Carolina. Fans of Beth's other books will remember that little town we got a brief glimpse of in Tethered Souls. Well now we get to see it in all it's small town glory, and I have to admit, if that were a real town, I would move there in a heartbeat.

Jake is an orderly at Hampton House, where Barbie volunteers her time. He's grown very close to Johnny, who is the younger brother of Barbie's childhood sweetheart, Kenny. He also happens to be a dead ringer for Kenny and the only man Johnny will let get near him.

The slow burn romance between Barbie and Jake was crafted perfectly by Beth. Both Barbie and Jake are dealing with tons of things that happened in their pasts, Barbie dealing with a hateful, mean spirited sister who slept with her husband, among lots of other things. Jake's past included a stint in prison and a record that will never go away. Can these two navigate a possible future together? Why would a doctor like Barbie want to be with an ex con like Jake?

Things get a little more complicated when Barbie finds out Jake has bought the farm next door to hers that used to belong to the Pritchard's, Kenny's family. How will she feel about this man she's growing closer and closer to living on her first love's land?

Beth has quickly become known for her ability to weave a very complex tale that is full of twists at every corner, secrets galore and revelations that are often wonderful but sometimes heartbreaking. I absolutely loved highlighting all of the little Easter Eggs I uncovered throughout the story and the subtle references to things we've read in her other books as well as cameo appearances by a couple of beloved characters. This book is listed as a Nine Minutes Spin Off Novel, but you absolutely can read this as a standalone. But I will say, if you read this as your first Beth Flynn Book, you will definitely want to go back to the beginning and work your way through the Nine Minutes catalog of books. I gaurantee you, you will instantly fall in love with the characters and never want to stop reading about them!

This book is pure magic, Beth!

WOAH!!!!

As with the original series, I didn't want to put this one down, and I didn't want it to end.
Reading the story told from Barbie, our heroine's point of view, I was firstly unsure how it could be related to the original series, which I LOVED! But, in next to no time, boom, there it was. . . . in the form of Jake.
Sounds simple and uncomplicated, but no! That would be far too easy, and after all this is Beth Flynn we're talking about! So begins the twist and turns!
No spoilers here, but first I was sure, then I was confused, then I was convinced, but no, suddenly I was questioning what was right there in black and white and back to being confused again!
What an awesome story, with so many twist and turns.
Barbie's life had never been easy, being brought up by a grandmother who seemed to hate the young Barbie for no apparent reason, then her childhood love Kenny disappears, her sister is a bitch, and her marriage falls apart. She returns home to small town Pumpkin Rest, and her best friend Darlene, and a job as the local doctor. Working at Hampton House, a residential home, she meets Jake for the first time, and faints!
It was awesome to get to met with Grizz again, albeit through memories, and hear more of just how far and powerful his reach from prison was. The way Beth brings all the secrets out and then pulls them together again is nothing short of miraculous, and as with the rest of the books, this will be one, getting more than one re-read!

Like I said, no spoilers, and so the story begins in earnest.

Five well deserved stars from me!
