Flint River #2

Hidden in the Hills

Rate this book
A Neo-Nazi terrorist is on the run from the FBI. Unable to risk returning to the group’s compound, he’s hiding out in the mountains of western Montana until the coast is clear.

Flint River’s version of Marilyn Monroe, classic beauty Tonya Anderson misses her ex-boyfriend, Trent. She longs for him to forgive her. Everyone in their small town adores rancher, Trent Stone. He can do no wrong with his piercing blue eyes and provincial, golden-boy charm. Trent and Tonya have been on again, off again lovers since high-school, over a decade ago. But now, he can’t forget her deception, and she’s tired of asking.

Tonya determines to move on and begins dating a roguishly handsome man she picked up hitch-hiking in the mountains. When this charismatic stranger arrives, what starts out as petty theft in their quiet little town soon escalates to murder. Can Trent get over the past in time to protect Tonya from falling victim to the nefarious fugitive tormenting their town?

I love when I find new authors and Jodi Burnett is one of my favourite authors now.
The suspense and mystery spiked with the love story between two characters that are on and off over a decade kept me on the edge at all times and I couldn’t flip the pages fast enough to find out what happens next.
I always find myself immersed in stories with such interesting characters and more uniques plots and this book hasn’t disappointed at all.

Couldn't get.beyond a few chapters

I' ve recently been devouring Ms. Burnett's books, but this one brought me to a dead stop. It's rare that I can't finish a book. I used to think it was a necessity in case the author just hit a rough spot. But I literally stopped trying o read this one after only a few chapters. And, frakly, I'm both surprised and disappointed.

I'll do my best to eli!image spoilers, but no promises. I'm general Burnett has a number of books with a similar thread: strong female protagonists and smart canine companions - generally working dogs. The first book in this "F?not River Series" varied from that but was still a good read. The canine was a pet - not a trained working dog - but still played a significant part in the story. The protagonist in this book played a minor role in that volume.

Here, however, she elevated to protagonist, her flaws far outweigh any empathy one could have. As far as I managed to go there was no curry friend on the scene, but worse, the storyline seemed to be on rails towards some.I editable plot points.

While my dismissal of the book might have.cit.me off from a brilliant story line and an amazing character transformation, the way things were going places such things in the highly improbable range for me.

Having said all of the above, I'll likely take a chance on the third volume in the series. If that turns out to be more a romance novel then I'll just patiently await Burnett's books in her other series.

This was a definite nail biter! From the very first scene I was pulled in. The author did a great job of giving us peeks inside the twisted mind of the bad guy. Trent is such a sweet guy and I so wanted him to forgive Tonya...I don't want to give anything away so you'll have to read the book to find out! It is totally worth it :) Can't wait for book three to come out. These brothers are some hot cowboys!!

I can see and smell every scene!

Jodi is a gifted writer, using an incredible vocabulary to craft each scene, character and action. She grabs you in the first page creating just the right amount of tension that makes you fly through the story. Thank goodness there’s a third one coming!

I just finished reading Hidden In The Hills, the second of three books in the Flint River Series. The story is suspenseful - I couldn't put it down and read it in two days. I love the way the author paints a picture of the scenes and the geographical area where the story takes place. Well done!

I am looking forward to book 3 and just placed my pre-order!

Small town brought to life

The Flint River series is full of suspense and humor. This author does a great job bringing the quaint town and it’s many colorful characters to life. It was very interesting the way the reader could understand and see what the bad guy was thinking, made him very realistic and twisted in his thoughts.

The three, four if you count the prequel/sequel, books in the Flint River Series build on one another. Although they can be read and enjoyed in any order, to get the most enjoyment from them, they should be read in the order they were written with A Flint River Christmas as book four in the series. Jodi Burnett is a cross genre writer, combining the best of the mystery, thriller and romance genres, but what makes the books in this series special is how each of her books focuses on a real social concern that society faces today. In book one that concern was the needs of the returning vet, showcasing how hard it is for them to reenter society and how hard it is for them to get the help they need. In book two, Hidden In The Hills, the social concern is racial injustice and hate crimes. The settings are realistic because they revolve around a life that Jodi has firsthand experienced with being from the great state of Colorado and a mountain girl at heart.

Hidden In The Hills begins with action that has the reader hooked from page one. A fumbled bombing attempt on an elementary school and an aborted bank robbery in the “Windy City,” Chicago, has a white supremacist on the run, looking for a place to lay-low until the heat dies down. The lone survivor of the botched bomber steals a car and ends up hiding out in the old abandoned sapphire mine in Flint River, Montana. Meanwhile a hitch hiker comes to Tonya’s aid when her car breaks down and she gives him a ride to Flint River. Seems like all roads lead to Flint River. Trent Stone put two and two together and comes up with five thinking that Levi Barrett, Tonya’s hitch hiking friend, is the bomber. Jack, the youngest Stone brother, comes home, after being away for many years, as an FBI agent in search of the bomber.

These books just keep getting better and better. Hidden In The Hills ends with Travis and Tonya finally married after they're on again, off again romance. Getting wounded while saving her life during the shootout with the bomber made both of them realize that they needed to be together as man and wife. Then, on their wedding night, their joy and the peace of the Stone ranch family is turned upside down when they receive a message that…. No, I’m not telling you. Go read the book. This one has a real cliffhanger ending. I’m off to read Book 3 in the Flint River Series, Danger In The Hills now because I need to know what happens next.

Highly entertaining adventure in Flint River

When I finished listening to the first book in the Flint River series I wondered where Jodi Barnett was going to go with this series. Having listened to her Tin Star and Dirk Sterling series, Run for the Hills was such a departure from what I was used to it gave me pause to wonder how the Flint River series might progress. Hidden in the Hills the second Flint River book answered my questions and fully hooked me on the series. This book has some off and on romance, a criminal, and plenty of interactions between the members of the Strong family. I have to say listening to this book was an addicting experience. Based on the first book I figure I had several elements figures out all the way until my prediction fell apart. I can honestly say while I’ve enjoyed both of the aforementioned series, Flint River is my favorite, the way Jodi describes the town, and its population takes me back to my childhood growing up in a small town in the Colorado Plaines. Once again Nick Cracknell takes an excellent story and elevates it through his variety of voices and delivery techniques.

Hidden In The Hills (Flint River Series Book 2), my seventeenth read from author Jodi Burnett, who is one of my favorite authors. As I wait for the next book in her current series I've gone back to an earlier series I hadn't yet read. I downloaded this 8-hour 11-minute/297-page read at 7:55 this morning and immediately started reading it., It caught my attention in the opening pages & I never put it down until completed at 12:25, I have to admit to speeding up the playback while listening. A Jodi Burnett book is like a visit from an old friend. "I was given an Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more in this series with Danger In The Hills (Flint River Series Book 3) next on my TBR list, and look forward to SPEC OPS K9 (Tin Star K9 Series Book 8) when it's published in October of 2024. If you like Julie Garwood's suspense works you'll LOVE Jodi Burnett! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

This is the second book in the series and the first I have read/listened to on audio by the author. Jodi Burnett is a new to me author.

The love story between Trent and Tonya had my husband and I rolling our eyes as we were rolling down the highway. Some of the dialog seemed hokey but we plowed through it to learn more about the meat of the story. The Neo-Nazi homegrown terrorist that wanted to blow up a school and its elementary students.

We liked how the author had us wondering whether it was one person or the next in the story. The author wanted to surprise the reader with the actual culprit.

We were glad at the reveal that we had figured it wasn’t who the author was pointing the clues toward. We were also happy that the on again / off again relationship resolved itself.

We were not happy with a cliff hanger.

We listened to this on audio and will be looking for the next to find out how Jack’s situation resolves itself.

I would rate this a 3.5 out of 5. The narrator did an excellent job.

I was introduced to Trent and Tonya’s on again, off again relationship in book one of this captivating series. This books starts with their relationship off and appears this time for good. Tonya even starts dating a new man, Levi. He is a stranger in town. Trent doesn’t trust Levi, especially since his arrival weird things start to happen in town.
Grandma, Cade, Joscelyn, and Sadie are active characters in this book and joined by the youngest Stone brother, Jack. Trouble is brewing and the brothers are in the middle of all of it. There is even a couple of unexpected twists, with one catching me off guard.
I had to admit, the reason for 4 Stars instead of 5 Is due uneasiness I feel with the Neo-Nazi terrorist plot. It’s just a subject matter I would rather not read about, and the actions by villains took are horrendous.

Love and trust

This is the second part of the series which picks up we’re trying to has decided that Tonya can no longer be trusted because of what she did to Joycelynn and Sadie. Tonya and Trent have been friends since kindergarten but now Tonya feels like Trent no longer wants her and she is trying to get away from him. The plot in the story involves love, trust and danger. A terrorist group of white supremacist had plans to blow up at school but the plans did not work out and one man escaped and eventually ended up in Montana. I found the plot very interesting and was a combination of a love story and also how detective story. I would recommend this book for those readers who like a love story and a thriller story.

Audiobook: I enjoyed book two of the "Flint River Series" even more than the first book. Tonya and Trent have had a tumultuous relationship for years, and Tonya has decided that she wanted to move on. Tonya Anderson picked up a handsome stranger, who was hitch-hiking in the mountains. Trent Stone doesn't trust the stranger. I enjoyed this story. I liked the mystery which encompassed the unknown hitchhiker, and the way his story was slowly revealed. There were some moments where the story had me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen. Nick Cracknell's narration was good, and his performance enhanced the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review which included my opinions.

I chose to listen this audiobook after reading the epilogue of this series first.
Trent and Tonya friends since early days, evolved into a romantic union that has had its ups and downs. All is not well as their relationship has hit the skids after the events of the previous book int he series. There is emotion, some acrimony, suspense, and danger that impacts their journey to HEA. Both characters have to grow individually in order to find the happiness they crave. The story is well narrated by Nick Cracknell. I wish there had been a trigger warning about an event in the book that is very disturbing.

This is a story filled with teenage angst, only they are no longer teenagers. It's a small town so everyone knows the on again, off again romance. Unfortunately they are not mature enough to take the steps needed to really talk with each other and resolve the issues.

Then danger comes to town. The author does an excellent job of keeping the reader in suspense, but you won't think you are. A difficult story at times, but good to see the family come together to support each other.

Action, mystery and mostly romance define this story.

The second story in the Flint River series. This one had suspense but included some humor the lives of the some of the characters involved. Tanya owned her hair salon and was deeply in love with Trent, the second brother who was gorgeous. His blue eyes and good looks lead him to dating many girls and women as he grew. He and Tanya would be dating then split. At one point she finds a new guy to date. He was not the perfect gentleman but hid his private life to her. It's a good story, a bit long for interesting.

This is the second book by Ms. Burnett that I've read. I really enjoyed the first so now I've read the second. "But nothing ever bad happens in Flint unless there's a stranger in town." I'm paraphrasing but the speaker is totally correct, at least in these first two books. The first stranger has now become family and the new stranger is the kind of person I love to hate. Now I've got to find time to read the next book (oh that TBR can get out of hand!). Recommended.

Great reading

Great reading about Trendy and Tonya. They had Been friends since kindergarten. Trent doesn't seem to want to commit. When she picks up a stranger he is worried but she won't listen to him. And someone is stealing things around. And now there is a Fugitive in the area. Full of mystery and love.

Jodi has done it again keeping us on the edge of our seat. Her character development is excellent. The plot twists got me good. This is the first audio book by this author I have listened to. I am so accustomed to her books dealing with several of the main characters working in law enforcement, that I found the pace of this book somewhat slower. The small town characters and plot were still good, and there was a major plot twist, I didn’t see coming. I had no problem following or understanding the reader.

The whole plot was enjoyable, several plots working together as smaller, main plots which bought the story together. I like the family conflict, the extremist element and the nomadic traveller. Throughout the story, suspense was bought in several times but thoroughly good audiobook.

So, book two in the series and what a great listen it was too. This author certainly knows how to craft an engrossing masterpiece that’s for sure. Twists and turns all the way to the end. What on earth is going to happen in the next one, cannot wait to find out. Highly recommended listen.

An amazing mystery full of suspense that will keep wondering what could possibly happen next. Tonya misses her ex but moves on. Danger seems to surround this new person. Will her ex be willing to help in time. Fantastic. The narrator’s voice really helped make this realistic.
