James Hadley Chase is probably the best know synonym of René Lodge Brabazon Raymond, an English writer also known by other pen names, including James L. Docherty, Raymond Marshall, R. Raymond, and Ambrose Grant. He is one of the best known thriller writers of all time. He was influenced by American crime writes and writers of hardboiled pulp fiction, but he rarely visited the United States and the books are based on knowledge acquired by reading and using reference materials. He has written some 90 books, almost half of which have been made into movies.
In "Blonde’s Requiem," a private investigator is hired by an industrialist to find three missing girls; all blondes and all disappeared mysteriously. Their disappearances have become an election issue as the industrialist, an undertaker, and a gangster are all three aiming to become the next town’s mayor. To complicate things, a second private investigator is hired by the undertaker to look for the missing girls, and, while the two argue, another girl disappears. Now, it is time for the two to join efforts, solve the mystery, and prevent other disappearances.

His father intended his son to have a scientific career, was initially educated at King's School, Rochester, Kent. He left home at the age of 18 and became at different times a children's encyclopedia salesman, a salesman in a bookshop, and executive for a book wholesaler before turning to a writing career that produced more than 90 mystery books. His interests included photography (he was up to professional standard), reading and listening to classical music, being a particularly enthusiastic opera lover. Also as a form of relaxation between novels, he put together highly complicated and sophisticated Meccano models.
In 1932, Raymond married Sylvia Ray, who gave him a son. They were together until his death fifty three years later. Prohibition and the ensuing US Great Depression (1929–1939), had given rise to the Chicago gangster culture just prior to World War II. This, combined with her book trade experience, made him realise that there was a big demand for gangster stories. He wrote as R. Raymond, James Hadley Chase, James L. Docherty, Ambrose Grant and Raymond Marshall.
During World War II he served in the Royal Air Force, achieving the rank of Squadron Leader. Chase edited the RAF Journal with David Langdon and had several stories from it published after the war in the book Slipstream: A Royal Air Force Anthology.
Raymond moved to France in 1956 and then to Switzerland in 1969, living a secluded life in Corseaux-sur-Vevey, on Lake Geneva, from 1974. He eventually died there peacefully on 6 February 1985.

Chase's 1945 novel, Blonde's Requiem is a terrific hardboiled detective novel set in a grim sinister town somewhere in the midwest or west, full of smokestacks and factories and mines and somewhat apart from anywhere else. Of course, it is a corrupt mess of a town, in the midst of a three-way election for Mayor, and our hero, our private eye, has little idea why he has been hired here from New York until he meets a rich old man who happens to be running for mayor (one of the three candidates) and is told that young blonde women are disappearing and it is throwing the election for a loop. The story is filled with toughs, with warnings, with action, with guns blazing, and it is quite an absorbing read.
What makes it work so well is that Chase keeps his focus narrow, his plot sure, and his action swift. It is a town just filled with action, but so bitter, so grim, so desolate, there is barely one ounce of joy or happiness to be found anywhere. And it is an insular little burg where a stranger coming into town is not exactly welcome anywhere, especially if he is set to delve into things that no one there seems to want entirely solved- like the three or four women who have disappeared.
It is a story of one guy who comes into town with nothing but his wits and a .38 and ends up solving the missing girls mystery, pissing off all the mayoral candidates, getting beat up, pulverized, choked, gagged, socked, kicked, and more. Sort of the white knight on his charger who is going to win the day. But it is a dark, gloomy, fearsome town where every hand is turned against him and no one feels safe. In short, just about what you want from a hardboiled pulp of that era.
I would be entirely remiss if I did not discuss the controvery surrounding this book and plaigairism with the accusations being made by none other than Raymond Chandler. As discussed more thoroughly in https://thepassingtramp.blogspot.com/..., the opening sequence of the novel has a nasty similarity to Hammett's Red Harvest. It is perhaps an accusation that should be taken seriously as Chase apparently was also accused of borrowing from Faulkner for another novel. Nevertheless, despite the controversy, it was a terrific thrilling exciting read.

I quite enjoyed this early Hadley Chase thriller about a series of disappearances in a small American town. Though some of the dialogue after 70 year comes over as corny, it's fast-paced and the ending is decidedly creepy and dramatic.

Оповідь Чейза майстерна і талановита. Я не можу сказати, що інтрига зберігалася до останньої сторінки, адже я відгадала злочинців щойно автор увів їх у текст, але від цього твір не втратив своєї цікавості. Читала я із величезним захопленням.

Порадувала наявність любовної лінії, скупої і дещо передбачуваної, але такої необхідної у світі жорстоких ігор.

What follows is a nicely-developed story told in that ol’ gumshoe style that follows a lot of twists and turns on its way to the final satisfying twist at the end.
I’ve read a couple of James Hadley Chase (the most well-recognized pen name of René Lodge Brabazon Raymond) crime novels before and always come away with a good experience. I expected much the same with this one but it turned out to be even better. I came very close to granting it 5 stars but only demurred because the solution to the mystery at the very end of the novel relied on information that was not available to the reader. However, that didn’t take much away from my overall enjoyment of the characters, the nicely-crafted plot, and the author’s approach to the telling of the story.
Before reading this novel I would have rated James Hadley Chase among my top 50% of 1940’s/50’s crime novel authors. After reading it, I've adjusted that standing to my top 10% and at this point I would have difficulty pinpointing my favorite.

James Hadley Chase's third novel to be published originally under the pseudonym, Raymond Marshall. And it's quite a nice one. Chase was really growing into an accomplished writer at this point. Like the earlier two Raymond Marshall books, this one is a classic hard boiled detective mystery. The differences with the others, however, are significant. This novel is a masterpiece of dark atmosphere and claustrophobia. It always has a feel of the sinister about it. It never touches on the supernatural, but with its focus on madness and serial murders, it could easily have done so had Chase taken that path. Too, the dialog is extraordinarily good. Smooth and well developed. Usually, I find a cluster of American idioms or terms used slightly awkwardly in Chase novels. But I didn't see any here. He got it right. Finally, without spoiling the ending, I do wonder if Alfred Hitchcock stole some ideas from James Hadley Chase in this story, especially with the ending and the reveal of the murderer. This was a good one.

Британський письменник Джеймс Гедлі Чейз написав книжку ще у 1940-х рр. і вирішив, що дія однозначно відбувається в провінційному американському містечку. Хоча кажуть, сам автор бував за океаном всього двічі та всі свої описи тамтешніх міст позичав, так би мовити «із відкритих джерел». Отже, дія відбувається у вигаданому Кренвілі, де твориться страшне: одна за одною зникають блондинки, а поліція взагалі незрозуміло чим займається. Паралельно у місці вибори мера, на яких балотуються одразу кілька кандидатів-важковаговиків, і один із них думає, що вся ця історія зі зникненнями якраз дуже знадобиться в його виборчій кампанії. Але це ще не все: одразу двоє із трьох кандидатів наймають для розслідування приватних детективів: місцеву жінку-детектива та досвідченого пана із Нью-Йорка. Від першої особи Марка Сп’юека, який і приїжджає до міста розслідувати справу блондинок, читач і знайомиться з тим, що відбувається навколо. З самого початку нью-йоркського детектива цікавлять кілька важливих речей: що сталося з місцевими дівчатами та куди вони зникли? а може це взагалі не зникнення, а вбивства? Це важливо, бо «за особливо небезпечні розслідування передбачені спеціальні надбавки».

Додайте до всього цього ще й протистояння між двома детективами щодо того, хто розплутає цю справу першим. Будьте готові, що письменник трохи сексист, і в фразах прописаних для Сп’юека та окремих ліричних відступах у сюжеті це особливо помітно. Мушу зазначити, що в окремих місцях український переклад має банально невичитаний (літредактором і коректором) текст, в т.ч. без важливих приміток з поясненнями (наприклад, що таке півакра). Але якщо ви слідкуєте за розвитком історії більше ніж за чужою орфографією, це ніяк не завадить насолодитися розв’язкою сюжету від містера Чейза.

I love this insanely interesting detective novel. This story is so fresh but it was published in the year my dad was born! Seventy-five years ago. Boggles the mind...
The plot is very peculiar and intriguing. Strange things are happening in one city, where pretty blondes disappear one after another on the eve of the mayoral elections. And as you probably guessed correctly, the population of this city fell into a panic. And then what? Then you just need to sit down, read, do not come off (you will not come off anyway), and enjoy the masterfully described development of events.
The plot is very peculiar and intriguing. Strange things are happening in one city, where pretty blondes disappear one after another on the eve of the mayoral elections. And as you probably guessed correctly, the population of this city fell into a panic. And then what? Then you just need to sit down, read, do not come off (you will not come off anyway), and enjoy the masterfully described development of events.

James Hadley Chase is one of my favourite authors and this book proves why I still consider him a master in the thriller department. A really good read.

Один із кандидатів на посаду мера запрошує детектива Марка Сп’юека. Для того, щоб той розслідував справу зниклих дівчат. Усіх дівчат є спільна ознака вони блондинки.

На посаду мера міста є кілька кандидатів: недавній промисловий магнат Вулф, який саме запросив детектива. Колишній картяр Старкі ➖ людина шефа поліції Мейсі. Власник похоронного бюро Еслінгер, який також найняв детектива молоду дівчину з містечка.

Детектив Марк Сп’юек, якого найняв Вулф працює в нью-йоркському Бюро міжнародних досліджень (ФБР). Під час всієї справи його пробують налякати, вбити, а також вбили людей, які допомагали йому в справі розслідування.

Рекомендую ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ще одна захоплива історія від Чейза. На цей раз не по грабування, а вбивства. Описано легко, читається також легко. Книжка зручного формату, оформлення приємне.
