In a big reading slump, I often turn to comics or nonfiction and this was a wonderful mix of both when I needed it.

The documented life of Clark Kent by Brainiac 5, this book explored the relationship of Superman with a range of superheroes and villains. Often quite spontaneous, it was able to remain informative throughout with the exception of witness reports, newspaper articles and journal entries. This book could've almost been 'Superman: foes and friends' - and the annoying Lois Lane who breaks up with Clark so many times, I don't know how their relationship even survives.

Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Great idea, terrible execution. There is no linear flow to this anthology of Superman's life. Understanding the events and how they happened in a correct fashion would be an easier task of reading every single superman comic book. More of a picture book than something "compiled" by Braniac 5.

Part photo album, part scrapbook, part journal, and part secret files, The Superman Files was written and collected by Matthew K. Manning, containing all the intricate information of the life of the Man of Steel from the perspective of Brianiac 5 of the thirty-first century to his friend and hero.

The Superman Files opens with young Kal-El on Krypton and his journey to Earth and his childhood growing up in Kansas and his journey to become one of the greatest heroes around – Superman. It also delves into his career as a superhero from his introduction to the world to the current time (as of publishing), covering most of the major events in the Man of Steel's career.

The Superman Files is a concise catalogs of all of Superman's family, friends, colleagues, and foes appear throughout the book in clippings from the Daily Planet, journal entries, surviving artifacts from Krypton, schematics for the Fortress of Solitude, and other technology, files from Stryker's Island Prison as well as a myriad of photographs of Superman's friends and foes.

Manning has meticulously collected the various and many information out there on Superman and tried to concisely merge them all into one narrative – a bible of sorts for the character. Organization wise, it is rather chaotic, but a logical chaotic mess, when reading it through as a novel. Using it as a data file or a reference tool is a tad more problematic, because the information is listed chronologically and not by subject.

All in all, The Superman Files was wonderfully constructed and illustrated reference of the life and times of Superman, his allies, contemporaries, and villains. It is a wonderful tribute to the Man of Steel.

I remember reading this book about the same time I discovered Oasis' 'Champagne Supernova'. Some time later, I went to a bookstore called 'Geek', dedicated entirely to well geek things, and while I was searching for some comic books, the song started playing. When the chorus came, everyone in the store sang it together - I still consider it one of the best moments of my life, like I'd finally found my people

A book with impressive scope and is a solid compendium of Superman's dense, complicated history before the New 52. The artwork is stunning but in all honestly I had time following it all. There's no real connective tissue between each chapter in Superman's life and so it gets thoroughly confusing, which I guess I should've expected.

3.5 stars. I really enjoyed remembering some of the Man of Steel's finer moments, but the book itself wasn't very well-written. The journal entries and newspaper articles were kind of hokey. I think a better book would be an actual history book, not a book pretending to be written by a comic book character.

If you aren't very familiar with the DC universe, this book might be confusing for you. There are lots of "Circumstances caused [character] to be catapulted into the future/murdered/resurrected/cloned" without a lot of explanation as to what those circumstances were. It's also confusing how various heroes and villains continue to pop up after they've been killed or sent to the Phantom Zone or Stryker Island.

Still, I enjoyed remembering story lines I had forgotten and learning some more about the stories I never read. And I loved the artwork.

As a coffee table picture book, this book gets five stars. But the writing is so juvenile, it gets dropped down to 3.

This book is so big I stubbed my toe on it twice. It needs to be that big to cover the 75-year history of Superman. This book traces Superman's history through the files of one of his future allies, Brainiac 5. We read excerpts from journals by both Superman and Brainiac 5, newspaper articles written by Daily Planet staffers (Lois Lane, Clark Kent, Perry White, etc.), "pictures" taken by Jimmy Olsen, and first-hand witness accounts from many people who saw Superman in action over the years.

The Superman Files is filled with tales of villains you'll remember and plenty you won't, rememberances of all Superman's friends, his relationship with Lois Lane and other superheroes like Batman and The Flash, and summaries of his major battles. A great-looking book that any comics fan will enjoy. Just don't leave it lying on the floor.

I'm an unrepentant Superman fanboy, so I enjoyed this immensely.

I like that of was written mostly from an in universe perspective as I always enjoy that conceit. The writing is pretty high level summary of various Superman stories from the post-Crisis on Infinite Earths John Byrne reboot through to the end of the pre-Flashpoint DC Universe. If makes me want to buy a bunch of the trade paperbacks of the story, which I suppose is the point.

I don't really think that the section (a mere 6-8 pages) covering the New 52 is really needed but this is a celebration of the 75 years of Superman, so I guess it needs to cover more than 1986-2011.

Also the art from various comics panels included is phenomenal throughout and shows a great diversity of styles unified by the iconic Superman costume.

Great summaries. He helped humanize Superman for me on page 216 or 217 when Superman wrote about his relationship with Lois and then helped me appreciate him on page 277 in Perry White's editorial. My only complaint is that there is only small blurbs for some villains that are placed randomly as throw aways. Fun read nonetheless.

I give this book 3.5 stars. While i have been a fan of the story of Superman I have never had the chance to read the comics. I enjoyed learning a little bit more about him then what I had seen in movies or on the TV Series Smallville. That being said at times i found it hard to follow the order that all the events described.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐\nTrabalho impecável! Um verdadeiro guia do Homem de Aço!\nUma pena que termine justamente com o Superman dos Novos 52, que tava distante de ser o Kal-El que a gente conhecia e amava...
