Banging Your Head Against a Brick Wall
The first incendiary collection of stencils and graffiti from Banksy, presented and bound in a handy pocket sized high quality format. Rarely have art and politics been put to such fine,and overtly public, use. Mix the irony and juxtaposition of John Yates with the beauty of the finest aerosol art, and you'll have some idea of how good this really is. The reproductions are interspersed with an excellent array of quotes, statements, letters and a beginners guide to painting with stencils. Very, very good.

His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine irreverent dark humour with graffiti done in a distinctive stencilling technique. Such artistic works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world.
Banksy's work was born out of the Bristol underground scene which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. According to author and graphic designer Tristan Manco and the book Home Sweet Home, Banksy "was born in 1974 and raised in Bristol, England. The son of a photocopier technician, he trained as a butcher but became involved in graffiti during the great Bristol aerosol boom of the late 1980s." Observers have noted that his style is similar to Blek le Rat, who began to work with stencils in 1981 in Paris and members of the anarcho-punk band Crass, which maintained a graffiti stencil campaign on the London Tube System in the late 1970s and early 1980s and is active today. However Banksy himself stated on his website that in all actuality he based his work on that of 3D from Massive Attack, stating, "No, I copied 3D from Massive Attack. He can actually draw."
Known for his contempt for the government in labeling graffiti as vandalism, Banksy displays his art on public surfaces such as walls and even going as far as to build physical prop pieces. Banksy does not sell photos of street graffiti directly himself; however, art auctioneers have been known to attempt to sell his street art on location and leave the problem of its removal in the hands of the winning bidder. Banksy's first film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, billed as "the world's first street art disaster movie," made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. The film was released in the UK on 5 March 2010. In January 2011, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary for the film.

Banksy's points to remember and/or to live by:
1. There are no exceptions to the rule that everyone thinks are an exception to the rules.
2. Lying to policemen is never wrong.
3. Only the ridiculous survive.
4. Doing what you're told is generally overrated.
5. A lot of people never use their initiative, because no one told them to.
6.... there's no such thing as justice and there's nothing you can do about it. The
more useful lesson I learnt was that there's no point in behaving yourself.

I've always"heard" of Banksy, but never really checked his stuff out. I remember when the "Girl With Balloon" self-shredding incident happened, it boggled my mind! The fact that it took me this look to look at his work brings me to shame. I've been missing out for far too long, I have a lot of catching up to do and I'm really looking forward to it.

I received this book as a Christmas gift from a very dear friend. I know how much he really likes Banksy and how hard he searched to get all of his books, so giving me one of them was just beyond wonderful :D...

More of an eye-candy and imagination igniter kind of compilation.
They say that Illustrations/ Drawings/ Scribbles / Stencils and Graffiti are psychological projections of somebodys thought about matters.. and its just but nice to get the point transcended from the artist to the viewers simply by scribbled strokes of lines and brushes thru brick walls along the city. Without the artists' direct and descriptive explanations of his ART-- Just look, and you'll Know! Nothin but the Magic of Art reflected here..WELL, ARTSYYY!

It was almost entirely photos (in other words, a quick read), but as an individual constantly looking for new visual art books, not one any less interesting. A collection of stencils and graffiti of Banksy's work (truly a street art icon), it was nirvana for someone who spends their time staring at garish spray paint on the side of trains (if you think I'm joking try riding with me on the way to school, it's insufferable). In any normal book, this amount of images would've annoyed me to no end. Get on with the story, I'm not here to look at illustrations made in a boring 1990s-esque approach to digitally converted art. But with BYHABW, the works displayed are the exact opposite. Crafted to make you think about the world the piece was created for and in, I could stare for hours at one page. Thinking on how different yet unmistakably similar marketing billboards, illegally painted graffiti, and children's books illustrations are was an interesting concept brought around by this collection, and I would highly recommend it to any art museum goer or visual art creator. Vastly distinct from your typical Renaissance painting but exceptionally so. Banksy, my number is in the phonebook.

クール。
政治的な主張をベースにしたスプレー・ペインティングそれ自体は珍しいものではないが、このアーティストの表現の独自性は単純にそれが洗練されている、というだけには収まらないようだ。
ステンシル表現を街路や公園へと（さらに、時には美術館の壁面にでさえ）「付け加える」ことで、そこにどのような権力意志が働いているのかを顕在化させ、そうした場所を「公共空間」として自分たちの手に取り戻すためのラディカルな効果を生み出しているように思える。
ポリティカルなメッセージを「表現」することが「政治的」だったり「ラディカル」だなどと短絡（＝思考停止）する怠慢に陥ることなく、黙々と自らの表現を政治化し、それを尖鋭化させていることには驚かざるを得ない。
掲載図版はモノクロームばかりだが、充分にその面白さとアクチュアリティを感じさせる。
