The demon Lucrecia accompanies her mistress to a remote castle to evaluate a powerful duke. He is suspected of dark magic and may be plotting to steal his brother’s throne. Lucy is shocked to discover that the duke has hired her erstwhile lover, the sorcerer Jacob, to vouch for his purity. Both Lucy and Jacob have agendas of their own at the duke's castle. They may need to put past quarrels aside if they want to leave alive. “Burn” is a prequel novella for The Incubus series. You can enjoy this story even if you haven’t read the novels. This series has plenty of heart and lots of steam. Adults only!
I don't have much to say but this was actually very good! I didn't expect any less from this author but I am always surprised when I enjoy a short story, especially a prequel, this much. This was pretty satisfying on its own but I am excited to read the series now.
I've been a fan of Lucy and Jacob since they showed up as secondary characters in the Incubus books, and this story shows us a whole new side of them as it takes us a couple hundred years into the past. It's also a different kind of story: The Incubus books are erotic romance, while this is a mystery/cosmic horror story with a romantic subplot woven through it. There's some action, some intrigue, some body horror, and one of the hottest M/F sex scenes Lee has ever written. Anyone who enjoys spending time with Lee's characters, or learning more about the world of the Shattered Sea, will find lots to like here.
To me, this was the weakest book out of the four set in this series. If I had read this first, I do not think I would have continued onto book 1. It's not horrible, I just think the author wanted to give us a peek into Lucy's back story and how she met Jacob. But, with that being said, there is really not a likeable character in this story, so it does not really endear the reader to anyone except, maybe, proving the point that Lucy has had to put up with incompetent people for a very long time.......
A delightful insight into the past What a wonderful story! Lucy and Jacob has so much history, and a chemistry that crackles like dragon fire. And, as always, Lauren Harris did a phenomenal job narrating the book and giving the characters voices. I particularly liked the piano at the start and close; it gives a suitable air of tension that carries throughout.
This was my first experience with. This author, and I listened to the audiobook. Granted it’s a prequel, but this was just kind of confusing. There just weren’t enough solid details about anything. Hopefully, everything will become clear in the actual series. It did keep my attention though. And I am looking forward to the first full-length book.
While this may be a prequel, I wouldn't recommend starting with it. I'd probably read book 1, then 0.5. Since it's a novella, it doesn't explain the universe or magic rules etc.
Great story, fun to hear a side story about a younger version of a favorite character.
