About the author

Banksy is a pseudonymous England-based graffiti artist, political activist, film director, and painter.

His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine irreverent dark humour with graffiti done in a distinctive stencilling technique. Such artistic works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world.

Banksy's work was born out of the Bristol underground scene which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. According to author and graphic designer Tristan Manco and the book Home Sweet Home, Banksy "was born in 1974 and raised in Bristol, England. The son of a photocopier technician, he trained as a butcher but became involved in graffiti during the great Bristol aerosol boom of the late 1980s." Observers have noted that his style is similar to Blek le Rat, who began to work with stencils in 1981 in Paris and members of the anarcho-punk band Crass, which maintained a graffiti stencil campaign on the London Tube System in the late 1970s and early 1980s and is active today. However Banksy himself stated on his website that in all actuality he based his work on that of 3D from Massive Attack, stating, "No, I copied 3D from Massive Attack. He can actually draw."

Known for his contempt for the government in labeling graffiti as vandalism, Banksy displays his art on public surfaces such as walls and even going as far as to build physical prop pieces. Banksy does not sell photos of street graffiti directly himself; however, art auctioneers have been known to attempt to sell his street art on location and leave the problem of its removal in the hands of the winning bidder. Banksy's first film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, billed as "the world's first street art disaster movie," made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. The film was released in the UK on 5 March 2010. In January 2011, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary for the film.

i always seemed to reside in neighborhoods where banksy worked. who knew that spray paint on concrete could brighten up otherwise dismally depressing neighborhoods and provoke political and sociological debates inside one's head on one's morning commute. he has since become a household name since my first exposure to him and in many ways i am not sorry for his success. he is clever enough to deserve it.

This novel, along with the rest of Banksy's work, is a great visual source for students to examine profound messages through the perspective of a graffiti artist. Banksy's art is instilled with political and social themes promoting anti-war or anti-establishment ideals, and opening student's eyes to this perspective can help them better understand significant historical events (such as the Vietnam War protests). All the students can look at the images in the text through their own personal lens, and interpret what they see in different ways. An exercise that we did with images in class this semester was called "Three Looks." This strategy has students look at an image at three different intervals for a specific amount of time to see what sticks out the most. When students share with each other what they observed they could find that their peers saw some of the same things, but also some things they didn't notice. Having this class discussion will help everyone see a new perspective on the given text/image, and come to a more concise and accurate conclusion.

Eventually I got to realise maybe it was the fact I was boring and paranoid that was the problem. But you find that people who know you rarely listen to a word you say, even though they'll happily take as gospel the word of a man they've never met if it's on a record or in a book. If you want to say something and have people listen then you have to wear a mask. If you want to be honest then you have to live a lie. Being yourself is overrated anyway. It doesn't help. People say 'I'm just being myself' as if that's some kind of fucking achievement. That's not an achievement, that's not honesty, it's lack of imagination and cowardice."

I don’t know what to say. I look up to Banksy a lot and every word by him is gospel to me. I feel like writing a review won’t do enough justice to what I feel about his books. I grew up with a family member like him, it feels great to read a book with the same philosophies and actions (somewhat) as mine.
