This was a pleasant surprise, a well-done, cross-genre literary hybrid of crime thriller, revenge quest, action-adventure, and horror. Sure, you could argue that the first half is a bit of a slow burn (after a shocking opening development), but the sporadic bursts of violence and the relentless grimness of the proceedings keep things interesting until the back half explodes into an orgy of bloodshed. The protacted finale in particular delivers the fiery goods, with various factions converging on an old farm for a kill-'em-all shoot-'em-up that includes thieves, militias, mercenaries, psychopaths, and crossfire innocents. Oh yeah, and huge, starving boars.
The best part is that the author, a Brit I'd never heard of until now, writes in a rich, evocative style that at times brings an almost dark, demented poetry to the prose. He eschews the lean, stripped-to-the-bone style so popular in American thrillers in favor of something deeper, darker, and more descriptive.
You know that saying, "Happy as a pig in mud?" Yeah, that's how I felt reading this book.
