Lovelace & Wick #3

The Army of Angels

Rate this book
There’s no rest for the wicked…even when the wicked are trying to retire.

In the thirteen years since they abandoned their demonic duties to Hell, Iago Wick and Dante Lovelace have become world travelers and developed an acute aversion to responsibility of any kind. Life is sublime until an old friend comes knocking with a favor to ask.

Gloria Ambrose is an angel in need. Her brothers and sisters are disappearing, and signs indicate the angels are being taken to Purgatory, a treacherous land that only a demon can navigate. As Dante and Iago plunge into Purgatory's depths, they uncover a madman’s plot to turn angels into weapons, using the vast wasteland of the underworld as his testing ground.

With the help of friends new and old, Mr. Lovelace and Mr. Wick devise a rescue plan, but peril, past lives, and amphibious beasts lurk around every corner. Not to mention, things are never what they seem in Purgatory. Whose twisted mind is really behind the army of angels?

My least favorite of the bunch, but it was still a satisfying ending to the series.
The writing was as good as always even if the humor, while present, didn’t reach the levels of the previous books. The plot wasn’t my favorite and although it had some good surprises, I didn’t care much for it. I’m not complaining because I still enjoyed reading this and Iago and Dante—with the addition of old friends and…friendly acquaintances from the previous books—as always carry the book and, separately or together, are more than enough to make up for any other flaws.
It’s sad to say goodbye to my two favorite demons and I hope this is not their last adventure, but if it is, I’m glad that I’m leaving them in a good place.
Highly recommended like the entire series.

I struggled with this one a bit. Part of that could be that I wasn't feeling well this past week and that I didn't have much time to read and had trouble concentrating when I did. But the larger part was that I just didn't find the plot interesting. It felt like a grab bag of Supernatural fanfic, and I could pinpoint the episodes that were similar to this plot - episodes I didn't like. The dry, dark humor that permeated the first two and a half books wasn't as prevalent in this one either. Still, once the action got going at about 60%, it was able to hold my attention better.

I adore Iago and Dante, and how devoted they are to each other. They may be demons born in hell, but their souls are more suited to loving and enjoying life than they maybe should be. Their decision in the last book to has some consequences and they are having to keep vigilant to stay ahead of them. Then a debt that Iago owes Gloria, the angel from the first book, comes due to complicate things more. I'm really pleased with how this was resolved and where it left Iago and Dante at the end. I do adore Bartholomew also and wish we'd gotten more time with him since Gloria tended to suck the momentum out of the story.

So other than the giant meh in the middle, this was nice, and it ended strongly.

I liked this one a lot, but not at the same level as the previous ones. I'm not sure why that happened, probably because I'm not too fond of angels and have little patience for them. Still, I liked to see our lovely demons again, and I loved the place where we left them.

Amazing Ending

That was a tear-jerking (in a good way) ending, and a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. If you haven’t read the other books, read them first. Like the first two, this was an exciting, well-paced story of good vs evil and love triumphing. Well worth it!
