Misunderstood, misused, and misguided, traditional education on listening emphasized the transactional nature of the experience. Offering tips on "how to do it better" and reasons "why we don't do it", the normal approach to listening has created a world where (gasp) no one listens. But, what if it didn't have to be this way? What if listening is not just a soft skill, a tactic, or communication tool? What if listening is a survival skill that offers the purest path to togetherness, unity, and acceptance the world has ever known? Written by Urban Confessional founder, Benjamin Mathes, this collection of short paragraphs will change the way you think about listening and offer nuggets of wisdom gained from years of Free Listening on street corners around the world.
A good friend brought this book to our house to read excerpts from throughout our New Year's Eve festivities and forgot to bring it home, so I decided to read it before returning it to her. This book is made up of many thoughts on how powerful listening can be. It's validating and respectful and you learn so much by doing so. You can show your love and care, and the book makes several arguments for listening with an open mind to those with whom you don't agree to gain a better understanding of their perspective. This is important advice in a time where we are so divided as a country. I found these passages to be very interesting and a reminder that a person's opinion does not define the person and you may still be able to find common ground on a human level.
I would recommend reading this book because it's thought provoking. I read a few passages a day and thought about the lesson in them. I will probably get this for myself so I can go back to read the powerful thoughts and wisdom in this book.
This is a book of wisdom. It’s one of those books you have to keep around all the time. I suggest to read one or two paragraphs per day, maybe as a morning routine, because all of them are really inspiring and may set the intentions for the day. To me personally, just another testimony to how big of a human light Benjamin is.
I've heard Ben speak in person on a few occasions! It's great to have his words and ideas in print. His message of love and worthiness is so valuable. Listening is how we can show love!
