When I first saw The View from Rainshadow Bay by Colleen Coble, I fell in love with the cover right away. I am a big fan of lavender - both the sight and the smell of it. I have one plant that I propagated this spring for the first time! I'm still far from having beautiful rows of lavender like on the cover but... baby steps... I hope one day I can have a little garden where I can stare at lavenders whenever I look out my window.

This is the scenery where this novel is set: beautiful mountains, forests, lavender fields in Washington state. Shauna McDade lives here with her little son, Alex. But for Shauna, Lavender Tides isn't so idyllic - a year ago she lost her husband, Jack, in a climbing accident.

And then the town is shaken by another beloved member's death. It's Shauna's mentor, Clarence. And Shauna is convinced that it wasn't just an accident. Zach, the best friend of her late husband, helps her in digging deeper into Clarence's death. Rumors fly about the two and it seems that someone is willing to go to great length to keep secrets hidden.

~ . ~ . ~

Well I have to be honest here. This book was slow. It took me way longer than a book of this length usually would because a good half of the book was hard to get through. Don't get me wrong, people are falling like flies, but that is done in a hurried way. More time is spent on people still being angry/sad/hurt/emotional after Jack's death. And people crying. It must be the lavender fields but everyone has tears in their eyes every second page... Up to like 75% when then *dundundun* things get into motion.

The other thing that didn't work for me was the mysteries. As in, to me they felt pretty obvious. Granted, I had my bet on two characters as the villain, but one of them really was the bad guy. Reading about the love evolve I was pretty sure it was obvious for everyone but the two characters that they will end up together. And they did! After much lamenting about how falling in love a year after your husband's death would make you disloyal to his memory.

I know it's my preferences, but there was too much "macho man saves the day". Shauna is ex-Navy, yet Zach thinks she needs protection. AND SHE DOES. It all felt like her character had been created to be the typical Christian woman and in the last moment some "badassness" was needed, so she became ex-Navy. Because her knees always shaking and crying whenever something remotely stressful happened, I think, would get her sent home after the first day in boot camp (or whatever the Navy has).

One positive thing was the inclusion of three (I think?) smaller characters being women of color. That was something I didn't expect so kudos to author!

All in all, I found this book to be slow, most of the characters to be stereotypical and the plot twists to be predictable.

I received an ARC of this book from Thomas Nelson via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Two stars for "it was okay."

Much of the story was fast-paced and enjoyable, but honestly the stuff in between was not. Evidently no one read it over for consistency. I also had some issues with character/theological aspects. It made it into a real disappointment, because the cover is stunning, and I had planned to buy a hardcover copy. Money well saved.

I'm going to put the inconsistencies in spoilers, just so no one's clues are messed up.

Next is a moral issue. First, I'm tired of reading books where characters get mad at God because something happened in their lives. It is SO cliched and overdone. It's done here. Second, we jump right into having FMC move into MMC's home. When she protests, he says, "People will say what they want to say. A little gossip won't hurt us...[your safety is most important.]" If he wanted to be honorable, why not ask a friend to come stay with them? Christians are told to refrain from even the appearance of evil. This does not make the guy a hero in my eyes at all. Then he "forgets" he should perhaps be wearing more than shorts to sleep in when he has a single woman in mortal danger in his house. And, yes, he went running into the yard in nothing but shorts to chase an active shooter. Sounds really smart, no?

Then Zach comforts Alex by telling him his daddy is "watching him from heaven." He quotes the verse about "encompassed by a great cloud of witnesses" to back himself up...and Shauna loves him for the words to her son. Whew!! What a case of eisegesis. No, that's not what that verse means. Does anyone really think it does? Reading that chapter was like nails on a chalkboard.

The story is a gentle whodunit, a romantic suspense. Shauna McDade, a widow, with her son Alex, is trying to make a living by flying passengers on her helicopter, to and fro between Vancouver and her town Lavender Tides. A year ago, her husband died in a climbing race with his best friend, Zach Bannister egging him on. Shauna hates Zach and blames him for her husband's accidental fall. But it takes a loose killer bombing her mentor Clarence, stabbing his wife Lucy, ransacking Shauna's home, for her to realise that the safe haven for both her and her son is with Zach.
Their investigation into the various deaths and strange environmental occurrences, increase their proximity and trust till all emotions blossom into love in the finale along with unmasking of the killer. From the safe haven of Zach's home to the safe haven of Zach's arms, this story is romance personified.
The characters of Shauna and Zach are well etched by the author. But I, especially liked Zach for his honesty and his dignity and the way he doesn't allow others' behaviour affect his own. His love for the McDade family sometimes makes him take risks even at the cost of his own safety.
We girls need a Zach in our lives...
Colleen Coble is a fantastic author, who writes light Christian romance with a dash of suspense and mystery. Her English is flawless and the way her story flows is like a crystal clear stream making its way from the mountain top.
What I really liked is the richness of emotions in the book, the love that the main characters Zach and Shauna feel and the way they conduct themselves, including their friendships between different workmates.
Colleen believes in God and that is evident in her writing, in the passages that her characters recite from the Bible. There are many characters in this book, along with a few subplots which will probably form the basis of the rest of the books in this series. All these characters have a part to play to take the story ahead.
The only part I did not like was the killer, not because he was a killer but I guessed his identity earlier on and the reasons for killing were a little flimsy. There was also a part where there was a dark shadow in the sea which worried the scientists, but results of their investigation was not revealed in this book.
So, all in all, I enjoyed this book thoroughly, it was a light read, fun with mystery suspense romance relationships friendships.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and publishers, Thomas Nelson and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

2.5 stars. The View From Rainshadow Bay is a mystery with some romance thrown in. There are Christian undertones to it as well. I had some issues with the consistency of the characters, the story, and some things that seemed pretty far-fetched.

As for the characters, I felt like the killer was not consistent. The killer goes from gleefully killing certain people to not wanting to kill others, and uses a different method for every single killing. Also one of the staged accidents would have been near impossible to stage. How would the killer have known exactly where they would be or exactly when to lie in wait?

There are other things like one person tying three men up while holding them at gunpoint with a rifle. There is no way one person could do that and still keep the rifle on the men. The three men could have overpowered that person and gotten away pretty easily.

As for the inconsistencies in the story, one example would be this: there is a package that has something in it that the killer wants, but the killer did not know the sheriff had the items that were in the package, so the killer goes after two different people in the book believed to have those items. But later on suddenly the killer knows the sheriff has these items, but gave one of them back to the main character? That doesn't make sense. Things like this just really annoyed me about this book. And don't get me started on guns being able to shoot off locks and silencers making guns completely noiseless, which is also included in the book. There were just too many inconsistencies and implausibilities in this book for me to completely enjoy it.

This is the second Colleen Coble book I've read. The other was Haven of Swans. I liked it better than this one, and I did not catch the same types of inconsistencies and implausibilities in that one. Other than those issues, so far I feel like her books are a little slow and just not compelling enough for me, especially for a series. Plus this one was very predictable and it was very easy to figure out who the killer was. This is the first book in a series, but I don't see a need for this to be a series, since everything is wrapped up in the end, and it works fine as a stand-alone, so I'm going to leave it at that.

I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher Thomas Nelson for giving me a copy of this book for review.

My Review:

While still reading, I became increasingly concerned and conflicted in how to assess and rate this book. The premise was interesting and original and the mystery was intriguing with several creative story elements that keep me reading and had my rating floating at four-stars. However, I grew restless and annoyed with the uneven pace and quality of the writing as some storylines dragged and became tediously repetitious, while others seemed rushed. Ms. Coble excelled in her creation and colorful descriptions of the quirky small town and its characters as I could well envision the historical and antiquated buildings, persnickety mother-in-law, and a somewhat inept middle-aged Elvis-wannabe sheriff with a thick mane full of product who had somehow managed to snare a young model for a wife. That image still brings a smile to my lips.

There are a lot of puzzle pieces and intrigue in this series opener! I didn't figure out who the villain was until it was revealed at the end.

Shauna tries to put the pieces together with the help of friends and non-friends alike. Although one mystery was solved, Coble certainly leaves the door open for more to come.

I especially loved a cameo reference to Gwen Marcey from Carrie Stuart Parks' series.

My gratitude to publisher Thomas Nelson for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and the opinions expressed are my own.

I liked the premise of the book. At its core, the idea for this book was solid. I really wanted to know the backstory between our two main characters, and I wanted good things to happen for them in the end. However, the execution just wasn't there. I felt like I was reading a book written for adults but at the high school level. Everything we were supposed to know or feel, we were told outright. We didn't have to figure it out for ourselves. There was no mystery or suspense to the relationship between our two main characters. Even though they were adults, the writing made them feel immature. In addition to this, somehow the plot devolved from a murder mystery into some sort of terror plot where people were creating earthquakes? There was a lot going on, and the complexity of the plot didn't jive with the simplistic writing style. There is absolutely potential here, but I wouldn't recommend this book in its current writing.

This was my first Colleen Coble book and I absolutely DEVOURED it! How am I only reading her work now??? If all her books live up to this one, I have a truck full of fantastic reads coming ahead 😍 Have you read any of her work? If so, which is your favourite?

I was hooked from the prologue of this novel.

In a sentence - This is a compelling mystery with an excellent storyline and very memorable characters….

There were a lot of characters introduced quite quickly which I struggled to get my head around at first but once I did, we were on to a winner and I absolutely flew through the rest of the novel. I literally could not put this book down, it was highly addictive and the pacing of the suspense was absolutely spot on!

I’m excited to see what the rest of the series brings for Shauna and Zach…

An exciting start to a new series! Set on the beautiful Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, this one starts with a suspenseful scene, and builds towards an action-filled ending, with a mystery, a bit of romance, and inspiration sandwiched in between.

This author knows how to spin a suspenseful tale so well, mixed with just enough tension and human struggle to keep it real. I didn't figure out the mystery until it was revealed towards the end. I love the setting of this new series, in an area close to where I live, making it easy to picture the beautiful scenery, including the lavender fields with the mountains as a backdrop and the saltwater bay in front. The mention of earthquakes in the area is totally realistic too, as we have had a remarkable number of significant tremors this year alone.

The main characters are still trying to find a way through their loss of a loved one, while in the middle of a new tragedy. The stress was palpable. Finding someone to blame when bad things happen to loved ones seems to be a common way of coping with grief and loss, as Marilyn and Shauna did. Learning to forgive and trust God was shown well in Shauna's situation, as she tried to reconcile how a good God allows bad things to happen. She courageously faced her fears and stepped out in faith to trust Zach to help her. He was very kind and encouraging to her. "You can't let fear rule your life, Flygirl...None of us knows what the future brings. We only know we are safe in the Lord's arms."

Looking forward to the next one in this series as the characters were heading towards Maine. Readers who enjoy suspense with some romance and faith will probably enjoy this book. 4.5 stars

Another good read from Colleen Coble. When 2 friends get killed 2 day from one another the main character thinks it’s murder, especially when she is given a package that many seem to want. Also the main character cannot forgive her dead husband best friend for her husband death. He decides to protect and is the feeling their feeling is love?? A great story of forgiveness and to trust in God even when thing may not go your way. I’m looking forward to see where this series goes. I highly recommend it!!

“Our experiences, good and bad, shape us and form us. That’s all part of our growth.”

Before I say anything about the book, can we just take a moment to appreciate the stunning cover? Gorgeous!

This book was so much more than I was expecting it to be! It was really good! Colleen does not disappoint when it comes to suspense. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time to see what happened next (both with the danger and the romance)! 😉

I really enjoyed how much depth most of the characters had, especially Shauna and Zach. I like how I connected and related with these two so well. The past hurts they had to work through to restore their relationship, the trials they endured together which made them stronger and better people, and the forgiveness they eventually bestowed on one another and themselves.

While there’s not a lot that I didn’t like about the book, there are a few things that bothered me. One of them being that the killer didn’t stick with his MO and that he would all of sudden question what he was doing when earlier on in the book, he could have cared less. And some of the things the killer did seemed unrealistic, too. While it didn’t ruin the book for me, it still wasn’t as enjoyable as it could’ve been because his personality wasn’t consistent throughout the whole thing.

Another, was that a couple of the situations that happened with Shauan’s son, Alex, shouldn’t have happened if they were properly thought out. If you knew you and your kid were targets, wouldn’t you keep an extra sharp eye on him? I won’t mention the scenes I’m talking about so I don’t ruin the book for anyone else, but really? They have a murderer after them. I know Colleen had to keep the story going, but I wish it had been more pragmatic.

As for the setting of the story, wow! I loved how Coble described Lavender Tides and the state of Washington. It makes me wish I could go there to smell, feel, and experience the place myself!

In conclusion, this book was very enjoyable! I loved the journeys of faith and forgiveness the characters went through, the edge-of-your-seat suspense, the danger, and the sweet romance in it.

“None of us know what the future brings. We only know we are in the Lord’s arms. This life isn’t the end, though it often feels like it. You know Jack is more alive now than he’s eve been. And when any of us pass on, we will be experiencing more life than we can even imagine now.”

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good suspenseful and romantic contemporary.

I received this book for free by Thomas Nelson in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I’ve expressed in this review are honest and entirely my own.

Oh my goodness! If  you are looking for a book with total mystery and intrigue then this is the one for you! Murder and mayhem describe this book pretty well... with a smattering of a sweet love story!

Shauna has recently lost her husband in a tragic accident. A year later two of her friends turn up dead and Shauna believe that this is murder and that she and her son might be next. From there she turns to her husbands best friend, Zach. Together the two of them attempt to solve the mystery of the murders and are faced with many challenges along the way!

This story is seriously written like a drama movie! I never knew what was going to happen or who did what until it was all revealed at the end! I really enjoyed how Shauna was so passionate about solving what happened and that her drive is what really made everything come together.

While this isn't what I would consider a long book, 336 pages, it did seem to drag on at times. I feel as though it could have been a lot shorter. While I really liked the idea of Shauna and Zach, I just couldn't really feel a connection with them. I felt a little apathetic about their relationship.

To me this is definitely more of a murder mystery than a romance novel, but a fun murder mystery at that!

The best thing about this book was the cover art. Loved it.

Notes to self:

1. Undeveloped secondary characters. A name would get mentioned and I would try to remember who they were; had they already been written about?
2. Why was the sheriff written like he was incompetent? References to state investigators and deputies but they were all no shows.
3. Two? different plots that overlapped but it seemed very chaotic with neither plot well developed. The secondary plot is a cliffhanger that carries from one book to another.
4. The earthquake maker was undeveloped to the point that it wasn't believable and it was the basis of the main plot. The male bad guy was laughable...except when he dressed up as "Spider-Man". Then he was scary only from the stand point of a parent wondering how safe their child would be if their favorite superhero visited them.
5. Just me but I didn't really fall for Zach and Shauna. Not a fan of the falling for the widow of your dead friend troupe. Gagged at the instant switch to calling each other fly girl and cowboy. Double gagged.
6. The ending felt forced.

Colleen Coble's new series is introduced with plenty of suspense and a plot that kept me hanging until the very end when the suspect is finally revealed. This was definitely an "I-can't-put-it-down" read, and captured my attention from start to finish. The plot is riveting, and the Washington setting with the lovely lavender fields was beautiful. Shauna and Zach's slowly unfolding romance was sweet and took a back seat to the suspense which was great. I loved how Shauna had the grace to finally realize she couldn't blame Zach for Jack's death and that Zack was in a lot of pain from the guilt he felt over the "accident." I also appreciated the way Shauna worked through her grief until she felt like she could move forward in life once again. Great start to a new series and I look forward to reading the latest release in this series, The House at Saltwater Point.

The View from Rainshadow Bay kept me guessing. There was a lot going on in this novel and at times I felt as if I was suffering from information overload. There were so many clues, multiple characters, and scenarios from both the past and present that had to be sifted through. It was very entertaining and the author kept me guessing through almost the entire novel as to how everything was connected and who the villain was.

I liked the main characters and hoped for the best for them. I didn’t connect very deeply with Shauna and Zach, but I did feel for them and all that they had both suffered through for the past year. There were plenty of action-packed moments and some good romantic tension that built throughout the story. I think this book will be the start of an exciting series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

A friend suggested I try out a Colleen Coble novel. She did NOT steer me wrong! I was expecting a cheesy Christian novel, but this was a face paced murder mystery with an intertwined love story. I couldn’t put it down it had me so wrapped up! And it was SUCH a nice change to read a clean book without language, an underlying agenda and graphic sex scenes. I will be binging her work for sure and highly suggest you give it a try!

A misunderstanding led to a death that our MC hero gets raked over the coals early on in which there wasn't any explanation until later on. I almost started feeling sorry for him.

A lot of twists and turns and mysteries that play out. Plus the love-hate of our MCs started warming up as she realizes he's not a bad guy.

I think I might have liked this a bit more had I done print. The narrator did nothing for me.

Catching up…

I read this quite a while ago, probably close to when it first came out. When this ended up as a donation to my Little Free Library Shed, I felt it was time to re-visit it and provide this simple review for Goodreads.

Well, let us just say it was a suspense thriller with a lot of romance, and a religious emphasis.

The characters were easy to like, the plot had just the right amount of twists and turns, but, it was also relatively predictable. It was still fairly entertaining.

If you are a Colleen Coble fan, you won’t be disappointed.

But if you haven’t read this author before, don’t start here. I recommend you read “Strands of Truth.” Review Here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Ever since her husband, Jack, died in a mountain climbing accident, Shauna McDade lives only for her five-year-old son and her helicopter charter business. Every day is a struggle to make ends meet and she lives in constant fear of losing more than she’s already lost. When her business partner and close friend is murdered, his final words are enough to convince Shauna that she’s in danger, too. But, where can she turn? Zach Bannister was her husband’s best friend and is the person she blames for the accident that caused his death. She’s barely spoken to him since, but, right now, he may be her only option for protecting her son. Zach’s perfectly willing to do all he can to keep Shauna and Alex safe. But, there are secrets dating all the way back to Shauna’s childhood that more than one person would go to extreme lengths to make sure they stay secret. This is a story of suspense, intrigue, and second chances.

I have read other books by Colleen Coble and I tend to enjoy her historical novels more. There were a few inconsistencies in this story, that I won’t go into, but I still enjoyed it. I did find that Coble has a lot of talent as far as character development, but she seemed to forget some details in Shauna’s backstory. The story was still very suspenseful and I did really enjoy it but I feel I could have enjoyed it more if it hadn’t been for these inconsistencies. I think she had a very good idea and that the storyline had a lot of potential. Hopefully the rest of the series will live up to this potential. I liked Shauna and Zach, in general. I thought she was a little bit hard on Zach, but I can’t promise that I wouldn’t be the same way towards the person I blamed for my husband’s death. So, forgiveness was another big theme in the story. I’m still looking forward to seeing what happens next because I do enjoy Coble’s books, in general, and I feel this series has a lot of potential.

I am excited that this is the first of a new series by Colleen Coble, one of my all time favorite authors. This series takes place in a beautiful coastal area of Washington state where we see small town life with lavender fields and forest land.

As always, the book takes off with action and suspense that carries throughout the story. Shauna McDade is a widow with a five year old son to support. Shauna owns a helicopter that she uses to fly customers around and also uses the flights as a platform for aerial photography. She is grieving the loss of her husband Jack to a senseless accident that claimed his life when he was mountain climbing with his friend Zach. She is bitter toward Zach and holds him responsible for encouraging competition between Jack and himself that led to the accident. But after the deaths of her mentor Clarence and his wife Lucy and it becomes apparent that she may be in the killer's sight, she has no where to turn for protection but Zach. As they deal with events that lead to clues about what is going on, it turns out that they are dealing with a more far reaching situation that they expected.

Shauna lost her mom to an earthquake when Shauna was eight years old. She also lost her little brother and baby sister in the disaster. Her father has never gotten over the event and has become a drunk. Despite his faults, Shauna loves her father but there are questions that she has surrounding the event that took their family.

The View from Rainshadow Bay has suspense, danger, natural disasters, charged emotions and threads of faith mixed in. I am looking forward to the upcoming books in this series.

This book would have easily been four stars if not for one thing: the leads platonically lived together prior to marriage, and this was heavily emphasized throughout the entire book. Also, there was a child involved, so this would teach him that it’s okay to live with a girl prior to marriage. I am not okay with this message.

While some details (nearly-black hair, hair “product”) quickly became redundant, most of this story was quite enjoyable to me. I loved that it featured two pilots, one of a helicopter and the other of an airplane. I loved that there was a little boy to be concerned about. I loved that it was an action-packed thrilled with a mystery to solve. I loved that it was full of twists that I never saw coming. I loved that it had a character in default of payments for something, which was completely realistic but isn’t often featured in books I read.

Content: skimpy clothing, alcohol, alcoholism, replacement profanity, platonically living together before marriage (heavy emphasis), sexual phrase

Thank you so much TLC Book Tours and Thomas Nelson for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and for having me on this book tour!

Starting off with a bang, I was immediately drawn into the danger surrounding Shauna and her family with a murderer on her tail.  I wanted to know who the killer was and why they were killing.  However, although the beginning pulls you in the rest of the book is a little disjointed and didn't always feel convincing at times.  I rate this mystery 3 stars.

As I stated the beginning really got my attention, I love when books start off in the thick of it with a bit of action or thrill to really get the mood set.  Yet after that opening the book was a little slow for awhile, and while there was definitely action thrown in through out, people killed off here and there, the overall feel of the story just felt off.  I liked the characters and the fun town that was created in this story and I really wanted to see how it would turn out so I pressed on.

Another set back for me was the predictability of the book.  It felt pretty obvious.  I also really didn't like how things just didn't match up through out the book.  For example, killer doesn't know where package is, then ended up knowing who had it all along?  Or, Shauna was meant to be ex-navy, yet she hardly could handle a gun and was always scared even though her sons life was on the line, then last second she's all super mom and what not.  It didn't feel natural at all compared with who she had been portrayed as the whole book.  Also, a suppressor not  "silencer", doesn't make the gun completely quiet.  An ex-navy person would know this.   All the theological aspects felt forced through out the story as well and I wasn't a big fan of that.

Overall, it was an ok read.  I am not sure why its marked as the first in a series as it seems to have wrapped up completely, but who knows.  I would read this if you're a Colleen Coble fan and want an easy mystery to read.  But be aware its a bit predictable and not too plausible.

The View from Rainshadow Bay was a gripping crime book by a Christian author. I enjoyed the storyline and will definitely read the rest of the series, but I found the writing style annoying sometimes. Some of the conversations felt really fake and even cringey, and the description of the romance (particularly the kisses) sometimes made me laugh out loud. Like really, who wants to have their lips described as "plump" or "firm yet exquisitely gentle"? 😣🤷‍♀️
Anyway, still a good book with a good message and an intriguing storyline.

The View from Rainshadow Bay is book one in the Lavender Tides series by Colleen Coble. After the death of her husband, Jack Shauna McDade was struggling financially but needs to soldier on because of her five-year-old son Alex. Shauna through her life could not get any worse. However, that was not the case. The readers of the View from Rainshadow Bay will follow Shauna McDade to see what happens. The readers of The View from Rainshadow Bay will be surprised with the end of this book.

Colleen Coble always incorporates her religious beliefs throughout her books in a way that does not stop me from reading her books. The View from Rainshadow Bay is an enjoyable book to read. Colleen Coble differently knows how to get her readers engaged with her books. I love Colleen Coble portrayal of her characters and the way they intertwine with each other throughout the book. I like Colleen Coble description of her settings that I could picture myself at Lavender Tides with Shauna and Zach. The View from Rainshadow Bay is well written and researched by Colleen Coble.

The readers of The View from Rainshadow Bay will learn about running a small helicopter Carter business. Also, the readers of The View from Rainshadow Bay will learn about walking around the beautiful Washington Coastline.

I recommend this book.

Well this was the best book by Coble I have read in a long time. I read it in one sitting and I had to keep reading to find out who, what and where. It was just so good, I did not see it coming good.
You are going to love the suspense, the romance and the God breathed story.
This is book one in The Lavender Tides series, I can not wait for book two.
This is a four star book. I recommend it. Don't miss it.

Boy, oh, boy, wasn't this story action packed from the first chapter! As always, Colleen Coble provided an on the edge of your seat mystery.

What I Liked: I've read so many books by this author that I like trying to figure out the mystery of the murder and who's responsible for the crimes committed. I've gotten some of the mysteries right (or at least partly right) and some of them wrong and this was one that I got wrong. I had my own suspicions, but this author kept the mystery all the way to nearly the very end and I found that most of my suspicions were wrong. (Which I count a good thing. Shows me that even after reading so many books, this author can still pull a surprise on her readers. ;)

I really liked both Shauna and Zach. Zach's broken heart over the loss of his closest friend in a climbing accident is heartbreaking. Especially since he considers the accident to be his fault and Shauna fully believes her husband's death to be his fault. As they go through the emotions of losing their close friends at the beginning of this book, they are forced to come to terms with Shauna's husband, Jack's, death and realize that his climbing accident might have the suspicious odor of murder around it. Zach and Shauna seek to discover who is responsible for her husband's and friends' deaths.

Zach was very endearing. I loved how he was so protective over Shauna and Alex, Shauna's little boy. He did so much for Shauna as her friend, helping her to heal after her husband's death as he's feeling guilty over his growing feelings for her.

Both Zach's and Shauna's emotions seemed realistic throughout the story.

What I Didn't Like: While this was an excellent mystery that kept me turning the pages quickly, I didn't particularly care for all of the details given about Zach's and Shauna's attraction to each other. I felt that it just wasn't necessary. And honestly, I wasn't a big fan of Shauna and her small son moving in with Zach. I get the reason for it, but I would have preferred having another adult living with them or another arrangement made. Those are my only two complaints that I have about this story, but of course they are my preferences.

I give this book 4 stars for an enjoyable story.
