I have everything I want—what am I waiting for now?
For centuries, an immortal Merlin has waited patiently for King Arthur to return, currently disguised in the modern day as the university instructor Merry Lytton. Finally, by a twist of time and space, Merry is reunited with past friends and his long-lost love. But when a powerful elemental spirit tears through the forbidden barrier between worlds, Merry must decide what his new purpose is and where his loyalties lie. When the enemy can hide in plain sight, Merry doesn’t know how to protect those he loves. Will he honor his deep-seated humanity, or should he unite with the elemental world of his heritage that he had abandoned hope of ever finding?
Emma Shelford feels that life is only complete with healthy doses of magic, history, and science. Since these aren't often found in the same place, she created her own worlds where they happily coexist. If you catch her in person, she will eagerly discuss Lord of the Rings ad nauseam, why the ancient Sumerians are so cool, and the important role of phytoplankton in the ocean.
Emma is the author of the Nautilus Legends (a marine biologist discovers that mythical sea creatures are real), the Musings of Merlin Series (Merlin is immortal, forever young, and living in the modern day), and the Breenan Series (a young woman follows a mysterious stranger into an enchanting Otherworld).
I was enjoying these books for the most part but they go downhill from the first one. Merlin is great but it frustrates me how long it takes him to catch on to pretty obvious things even though he is as old and wise as he is. Also when one of the main side characters (Jen) just decided to act completely out of character and mistrust Merlin and go back to dating the useless hunk of meat other guy it annoyed me to no end and I just didn’t want to read anymore of this series. I can take a lot but characters doing things just so the story can have some drama is the stupidest thing to me. Find another motivation that makes sense.

Once again I found myself binge reading, not something I usually do. Today, I was looking at some other authors. Amazon gives one the opportunity to read a few pages. Of three different authors, I found one I could only read the first two pages. There is something to style. Ms. Shelford has (for me) an addicting style that makes stopping difficult. On to the book....
Well, Merlin finds he is surrounded by folks from his past. While he lives eternally, his family and friends reincarnate. His father, he finds, is a no goodnick. Oh well, at least he now understands more of his potential.
Merlin may have stopped March and the Potestas plan, but the Successor still managed to transcend. Is that good or bad?
Footnote: 1) It may seem dull for him to read his students' essays, but what about them? They put all that time into something dull to them. At the very least, he can read them.
Fave scenes: talking to the air, Wayne’s revelation, Todd’s first lessons, and the earth statue.
The whole series is... awesome. While at times predictable due to spot on foreshadowing there are plenty of twists. The struggles with destiny, free will, morality, power and powerlessness make all the characters seem so human. No one more so than perhaps the least human of all, the immortal Merlin.
Love Love Lovvvve having Merlin, Nimue, Arthur, Guinevere, and Gwaine all together again!!! Morgan coming back as March tracks considering her volatile past… I’m predicting someone is going to be Lancelot, but I really hope Jen and Alejandro reconnect as they did originally.
Enjoyed this book, but found it didn’t really keep my attention like the other books. Perhaps I need a break from this series now, will revisit again in the future to finish.
