The Chimneysweep's Daughter

Rate this book
What little girl aspires to become a chimneysweep? It was all Maggie knew. Her father was a chimneysweep and she loved him. He was all she had after her mother took off with a man Maggie stumbled upon when she was sent home from school because she came without a lunch…again. From five years old, her life centered on herself and her father. His many years working in soot filled chimneys took a toll on his health until Maggie was fifteen. Their hope of one day buying a little cottage in the country where they would enjoy the fresh clean air and home grown food was close to becoming a reality when his body could not recover from the years of abuse, leaving Maggie on her own. Traveling west with nothing but their few household possessions, ‘Old Mule’, and a wagon, Maggie began her new life alone but determined to find a place that the money they saved over the years would buy. Occasionally, she would supplement her supplies by cleaning a chimney, picking up information along the way.

Outstanding

This is my absolute favourite of all this Author's books i have read, so far. I want to read everyone!
Maggie is precious, loved everything about her. She is humble, strong, determined, caring, giving and more. Really enjoyed how God blesses her along the way in so many different ways. The best blessings are "family" and how it takes place. For me, it is a book i never wanted to finish, it wanted it to just continue on. It felt like "finally coming home". Truly outstanding. Cannot recommend it highly enough. Stays with you long after finished reading it. Lots of good wisdom and ideas to ponder on too.
Try it. You'll be blessed.

Author presents a creative story of a young girl who must make her way in the world when her chimney-sweep father dies. Using the skills she has learned from helping her father, she disguises herself as a man to make her way through this profession until a wealthy kind gentleman clandestinely takes her under his wing. Many others assist in the background as she independently establishes herself through some farmland acquired. Enjoyed the straight-away manner of presentation with an independent, yet Christian theme interwoven as she finds her true love through his persistence of breaking through her armor.

Totally Amazing Story

This is just a Totally Amazing Story, young girl lives through hard times and learns lessons from it. She takes on adult responsibility when she is orphaned at a young age of 15, and she sets out on her own. This story tells of the path she takes.

Letting the Lord lead

This was a wonderful story of letting the Lord lead the way. Maggie's Faith and kind heart gave her a life of love and the ability to love and understand others. As always Jean's books are so enjoyable that I finish then much to quickly. I feel like I am part of the story, stepping into the pages and living in the moments..

Heartwarming

The Chimney Sweeper's Daughter is a delightful story that offers hope in the most improbable situation. I loved seeing a deserted little girl find love and respond so openly to it, then share that love with a little boy who needed it as much as she did. This story is an excellent example of true Christianity.

Spirit and determination blended with faith

Great read. No sexual drama. A young woman struggling to make her way in the world who turns to God for help. What a concept! Drawing strength from friends and God this heroine accomplishes what she needs to with whatever she finds at hand. She adapts, makes do, mends and fixes things instead of whining and complaining. A fresh read.

I’ve had this book on my Kindle for quite a long time and I now wish I hadn’t waited so long to read it. Maggie is so kind, giving, resourceful, and so Godly. She started life in a tough situation but came out of it for the better. The beginning, middle and end were all so very good. Just a very sweet read.

I loved this book! Especially for what we have been going through this year. It seemed to fit about trusting God to work in our lives even when we don't understand. If I had the funds, I would buy every book of Jean L. Kuhnke's.

God's Goodness

I loved the story of Maggie, the chimney sweeper. She never let forgot to be humble and honor God in all she did. Her father instilled in her a love for God and acceptance of all people. Great Christian fiction!

I am my father’s daughter

Momma was so mean and I learned to stay in a corner away from her and her friend or friends, we never ate like she did. Daddy works so hard and he didn’t even know what was happening.

Humble beginnings

From beginnings based in a mother's neglect but a loving father, Maggie faces life's challenges and is truly blessed in the people she is blessed to meet.

The making of a family.

It was enjoyable but got rather boring and predictable towards the end. Visualizing a working farm was an enjoyable part of the book.
