OHKUBO Atsushi

Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.

Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.

If anyone wants a clear idea of who Patty is as a character, I would suggest they read "The Ultimate Written Exam" chapter. Not only is it hilarious and one of my favorite parts in anime, but readers get probably the best insight into Patty. And it is also the reason why I love her so much, she's absolutely nuts and I love it. Also Kid "dying" when he rips his paper is comedy gold, my gosh he is such a mess and I love him.

It was nice to have a funny chapter to offset all of the intense action and looming peril and it was also nice getting more backstory on Liz and Patty. Its kind of incredible how much they changed when meeting Kid, and yet they haven't lost some of their core personality traits; Liz is still the one who leads the charge and is more outwardly aggressive, while Patty loyally follows her sister and is more energetic. Its more like they kept those traits and are applying them in a positive manner rather than a negative one. They're my favorite characters in the series and I'm looking forward to seeing them grow in the future.

A dramatic showdown is in the works and I'm psyched to see where it goes. I'm rooting for my babies and can't wait to see them kick ass.

As soon as I picked my favs (Stein and Medusa) this volume happened and I am LIVINGGGGGG for it. The fight scene is amazing. I can’t wait to get to the next volume 😍

Another volume that's pretty light on fanservice overall. But when it hits, it hits!

Anyway, I suppose this reflects Ohkubo getting more serious with the story. Crona is definitely a major enemy, as already established. And we also get the wolfman, Free, who has werewolf powers, ice magic, and a demon eye stolen from a witch. The last couple chapters in this volume start what appears to be a bigger arc than we've had thus far, with Medusa seeking the First Kishin who is imprisoned under DMWA: Asura.

This one was a good continuation of volume 2, and I think there’s some interesting stuff going on throughout the book. Again, these characters are all fantastic and really shine! The mangaka has a great talent for balancing comedy with more serious and heartfelt moments. My only main issue with this instalment and what’s keeping me from rating this 5/5 is some inconsistencies. Mainly, I’m referring to how Soul and Maka go from being incompatible to fighting together to suddenly being ok again when its needed for the fight. I don’t think this was explained well enough, especially when it was such a large aspect of the previous major fight in this book.

As always, looking forward to reading the next one! I can’t wait to see what they get up to next!!

The Perfect Edition of the volume makes the art look so crisp! And I love the coloured pages as well! Ohkubo has such a unique art style, that it did take me a bit to get used to, but once I did, the variety of cool character designs that he’s got has got me hooked! The introduction of the immortal guy in this volume really caught my eye 😍😎😎

Finally getting somewhere! The Witch's plan is in action to revive a even bigger bad.
Funny that when a werewolf/wolf themed character shows up they are automatically cool. Also, Death the Kid's gun action panels? So easy to read and a treat to see executed so well.
