When I was a kid, growing up on the edge of the Seattle metro area, I learned in school that while the rest of the country had a history of white supremacy and genocide, slavery and Jim Crow, the Trail of Tears and wars over territory, we here in the Pacific Northwest had a history mostly marked by peace, equity, unremarkable people building quiet lives growing apples and such.
That isn't true.
I was also under the impression that we didn't have any Chinese restaurants in my area--an area that features Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Indian and Mexican restaurants, among others--because Chinese food just isn't that popular here.
Yeah, that's not true either.
