The Ballerina Academy #2

The Running Back and the Prima Donna

Rate this book
He thought he had her figured out. Turns out, he was wrong.

Bianca
Everyone at the ballet academy think they know me—the prima donna. The diva. The mean girl. They’re wrong.
What they don’t know is that I’m moments away from losing my meticulously planned out life. I’m not one to show weakness but my ankle has a different agenda. Adding Ryan to that equation only complicates things more and suddenly the only person who can save my future—and my secrets—is the one person I’m not sure I can trust.

Ryan
I’ve spend my life not caring. If it doesn’t involve Mom or my kid sister, Rosie, I don’t care. Period.
But there’s something about Bianca. Something about her desperate desire to hide the fact that she’s a pageant queen that I can’t help but involve myself in. Sure, it’s black mail—she does what I ask and I keep her secret—but I really think I can help her loosen up. After all, that’s my speciality.
Until things aren’t as simple anymore and suddenly, my feelings are deeper than I like. I come from a man who leaves, so why do I think I’d be different with Bianca? It’s better for me to stay away than for me to break her. And the last thing I want to do is break her.

Oh my! I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this book. After reading book one and not really caring for Bianca I was a little hesitant. But I've also come to learn that the characters that you don't always root for a like have their reasons for the front. And that's definitely what Bianca puts up...a big old front. She's great at it and will survive and move on with life soon with no one the wiser. Of course that was all until Ryan shows up. He's a problem and a distraction that is causing her troubles. If she can avoid him and survive the next couple months she'll be fine.

Ryan has different plans than Bianca and isn't going anywhere. He's figured her out and is going to have fun pushing her buttons until he can get her to lighten up and enjoy life. And it doesn't help Bianca that he's discovered one of her secrets.

I actually found myself really liking these two characters. A lot more than I initially thought I would. These two have their reasons for why they are either so uptight or extremely go with the flow/I don't care. I really liked how the author showed them learning to trust each other and to have a friend that they could relate to and share their struggles and insecurities with. Even though it's a YA novel, I really enjoyed the depth to these two. And yes, I really like Bianca, a LOT more than I would have thought.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. It's another one of my favorite tropes! Yay!

Content: Clean. This does have a character who is a teenager who ends up drunk. It is mentioned after the fact of his drinking. I don't agree with the underage drinking and partying, the author doesn't write it in the book as something glamorous or fun either. A character also talks about his dad in the sense that he is just a sperm donor and not his dad.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Two young adults, both carrying a load of problems on their shoulders and hiding behind facades to keep others from knowing the truth, are paired as dance partners in what was supposed to be a disciplinary exercise. Ryan teases, jokes and plays the laidback charmer but beneath the veneer, he battles to keep his act together for the sake of his mother and sister. Bianca, the ultimate prima donna has no friends as she has driven everyone away. Her one ambition is to make it as a ballerina and she will do whatever it takes in attitude or pushing her own agenda to achieve her goals. A most unlikely pairing, and yet each discovers the chink in the other's armour. There is so much hidden pain in their lives but Ryan is the one person who can reach in and save Bianca from herself. The novel is most suitable for a younger age group, is well written and emotional, but comes to a good conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Plot- This is a book about the resident mean-girl getting some humanity and finding love. It was ok.

Writing - kinda superficial, tbh.

Characters- The bratty FMC was ok. The MMC was more likable. I loved the MMC’s little sister and what she added to the storyline as well as his character (protective, loving big brother). The author did a good job depicting the two MC’s family members.

Romance- Why did the MMC like her from the get-go? This would have worked much better if he didn’t like her at first and then slowly came to like her, as their chemistry builds.
Unfortunately, they didn’t have much chemistry. She pushed him away and then he pushed her away and then they finally got together.

Content-

Language- none
Spice- clean
Substance abuse- he gets drunk (triggered by his estranged dad coming back) and feels bad about it.
Violence- none
Cover- fine
POV- dual POV
Cliffhanger- no
Format- audio via Hoopla
Narration- good

(4.5 stars) - Deceiving appearances & superficial judgments...

Ryan & Bianca seem to be complete opposites, but they share similar problems. At first, they're so focused on their own pain - and hiding it - that they don't realize the other is suffering, too. Ryan deals by refusing to take life seriously. Bianca deals by being so intensely focused that she bulldozes over everyone in her path. Not surprisingly, then, they drive each other crazy.

Ryan enjoys pushing Bianca's buttons. He views it as payback or teaching her how it feels to be on the receiving end, but in the process, becomes a bully himself.

"That panicky feeling in my chest was back because...oh crap. I'd broken Bianca."

They gradually begin to recognize not only that they're feeling some attraction toward each other, but also that there's more going on than meets the eye. It's amusing, while their defenses are still up, seeing how the two of them figure out how to manipulate and maneuver around each other. As they spend more time together, their defenses begin to crumble, and they each begin to see some of the hidden depths in the other.

The story actually has more depth than I expected and was easy to get swept into. The resolution is both incredibly touching and fun, along with a lead in to the next installment with Cooper & Eve

*Clean romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic

I was worried that Bianca would be too hard to relate to based off the first book in the series, but that is not the case.

I loved how Ryan and Bianca’s story took place outside of the dance studio. It was amazing to see the true depth that they have and see that factor into their relationship. Also can I be Rosie when I grow up?

Overall I can’t wait for the next book (like usual)

This is a well written book with strong characters and an entertaining story line. The author does a great job pulling at your emotions with all the pain flowing through the pages. I enjoyed reading Bianca and Ryan's story.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.

Great book. Anne-Marie Meyer and Maddie Dallen are both incredible authors and I've read their separate work and it was amazing so I really looked forward to this series and I was not disappointed. Bianca seems like a witch with a B who only cares about dancing but she has lots of secrets and is terrified of letting anyone in to love her. Ryan is a cocky jerk who only cares about himself, or so it seems. He turns out to be a very sweet and caring guy but just doesn't want to let anyone in to find out. Until he drags Bianca off the stage after she injured her ankle in the middle of an audition, they didn't talk much except for the occasional verbal sparring match. After that Bianca is unable to dance so she teaches the class with her peers and the football players. Ryan is trying to do whatever he can to get under her skin, and he is succeeding. Ryan's little sister drags her to a beauty pageant and guess what he finds. Bianca is competing. Now he has dirt on her so he makes her do a lot of crazy things and helps her loosen up a bit, which then makes Bianca rethink if her dream is actually to dance. This is a wonderful little romance novel for a weekend vege that will have you laughing and screaming and tearing up all at the same time!

As always with Maggie Dallen's stories, if you have a mean girl heroine - at least that's how we got to know Bianca in the first book in the series - there is usually more to that mean girl than meets the eye.

Bianca has her reasons for keeping the rest of her world at arm's length, though that doesn't mean that everyone (*cough* Ryan *cough*) accepts that status quo. This hero with "resting smirk face" is determined to find a chink in Bianca's armor, yet he's in for quite a surprise once he gets to peek behind her carefully crafted facade.

These two complement each other wonderfully, and I love how Ryan does his best to take care of his little sister, Rosie (who, btw, is absolutely adorable).

This is a lovely, well-written story with all the feels, and I'm really looking forward to more books in this series!

Sweet YA Romance

Two different world collide. Both trying to hide who they really are by pretending not to care about what the world around them thinks. Football, dance, beauty pageants, rock n roll, all take the stage in this fast paced romance. Come along for this rollercoaster ride while the characters find out who they really are and what dreams they should be fighting for. Happy Reading!

This book explores the idea of the masks we wear. Is mean girl Bianca really just a stuck-up rich girl? Is goofball Ryan really just a carefree running back? And if not, why do they act like they are? The other concept this book explores that I really liked is the idea of "I've worked my whole life for this, so it has to be what I'm meant to do, even if I don't really like it anymore, right?" This book at it's core is a contemporary YA Sports Romance. But it's a lot deeper than a lot of those types of books are. I feel like it really captures some of the real life struggles teens face when they're trying to figure out who they are and where they belong in this world, what they're called to do and why they're here in the first place. It's a fun read, but it's one with some meat on its bones, and that is something I really appreciated. I would definitely recommend this book.

It is amazing how little we really know about someone. Ryan and Bianca both have things that they keep hidden. Ryan really irritated me at first - did not like the way he treated Bianca especially at his concert. I get it - it was like pulling the little girl's pigtail when you like her - but come on. However the more I got to see the real him and her, I really liked both of them. Together they make an awesome couple. Despite their hardships I loved that the author portrayed their families as loving them (not the usual take). Of course there is angst but it was handled really well and the ending was awesome. Great lead in to book 3 - which I am looking forward to.

Bianca is the mean rich girl or is she and Ryan is the supposed bad boy with a sweet side. Everyone think they know Bianca but that couldn’t be further from the truth but when Ryan stumbles into her real life things get interesting. Ryan likes to push Bianca’s buttons but the more time they spend together the more they get to like each other. Ryan annoyed me a little but I can understand all with family situation wasn’t easy and I absolutely adored Bianca’s family her mom might have been different but she supported her all they way. It was a great read with a great couple! Can’t wait for more.

An enjoyable, sweet and clean read.
Bianca is a ballerina, she dances, that's it as far as her fellow students know and she plans to keep it that way. Ryan plays football and is the lead singer in a band, he doesn't do serious and only cares about his mom and sister, nothing else matters.
When opposites collide and friendship is formed it changes lives, especially when your least expecting it and sometimes old wounds can be healed in the most unlikely ways.

I received and ARC copy of this book, the oppions expressed are my own.

Original YA series. Sports romance with a difference. Football players join the ballerinas for after -practice tuition to improve gameplay. Coach's orders!!
In this second novel we have the mean girl/ice queen and the jock. Appearances are deceiving. All that glitters is not gold. Will things be different when the truth comes out?
Witty as ever. Easy read with hidden depth. Always look deep under the surface.
Looking forward to another installment.

Appearances... Can Be Deceiving. The RB who happens to be a local rock god. The ice queen Prima Donna. Both have secrets. Who will reveal theirs first? This series took some very unexpected turns here, and Meyer's partnership continues to be felt on Dallen's normal work. Overall stronger because of the unexpected turns, this is a solid middle outing in a series and manages to clue us in that there are troubles between the couple for the next book in the process. Very much recommended.

Pretty good!!

https://ladiikeiii.wordpress.com/2020...

Spoilers. Maybe just a few splash 💦 throughout this review, let's see 👀...

So okay! I was curious as to what will happen and how it would happen when it came to both Bianca and Ryan. It was interesting to learn that they both had issues, and both ran from problems. Well, more so, Bianca lied about a lot of things. Though she had her reasons. I liked how Ryan taught her that she could be more than prima Donna. He showed her a new meaning of life. Not only that, but Bianca also showed Ryan that it's okay to care and love someone who you want to be in a relationship with.

He had so much built-up hurt with his father that he was known to run away every time some got tough, more so when his father comes around. I do hope that he gets a chance to talk to his father and work things out with him. But not only that I was glad to read that Bianca finally told everyone the truth and not only that both Ryan and Bianca worked things out when it came to their relationship since Ryan had broken up with her since he didn't want to hurt her because he felt like he was going to end up like his father a wash-up musician and what not!!!

But his mother shines some light on the situation to help him understand that both she and his father was in the wrong and he and Bianca needed to work things out with one another. & I was glad that they did!!!!

Besides that, I can't wait to read Colleen and Eve, Story!!!

Sweet read

I actually liked this story a lot better than the first.

Bianca and Ryan are so similar. They have armor up to keep from getting hurt, it just manifests in very different ways. Bianca caves first when Ryan starts chipping away at hers. He eventually succumbs too, but he needed a lot more of a push to get there.

I will say though, I knocked off a star for two reasons. The first being the repetitive inner dialogue. In between actually conversations, there was a lot of the same thing. Just said in a slightly different way. Or a different analogy. It really started to get annoying after awhile.
The second reason is Rosie. She supposedly 7 years old (and the math is a little wonky with her age and the time Ryan's dad left, so some side eye is given here). Ryan absolutely should drop everything and rush over to her when she's home alone. At 7 years old!!! Who the hell leaves a 7 year old home alone. Really, ladies.

The Running Back and the Prima Donna was such a fun and nostalgic read — it gave me total Wattpad-era vibes in the best possible way. The story has that addictive mix of drama, banter, and romance that keeps you turning the pages just to see what happens next.

The dynamic between the characters felt straight out of the stories I used to binge when I was younger — the confident athlete, the fiery heroine, and all the tension and misunderstandings that come with it. My younger self would have absolutely eaten this up, and honestly, I still really enjoyed it as an easy, feel-good read.

It’s not super deep or complicated, but that’s kind of the charm. It delivers exactly what it promises: a fun, emotional, slightly over-the-top romance that makes you smile, roll your eyes a little, and root for the couple anyway. If you loved Wattpad stories or early NA romances back in the day, this one will definitely hit that same sweet spot.

Great YA Sweet Romance

She has a secret. She isn’t as rich as she has led everyone to believe, and she has a way that she would be mortified if it got out to make the money for her tuition. He is an older brother. His father left his mother when he was young and he’s afraid of being hurt again. He cares for his little sister while their mother, a nurse, works.

Queen Bee Bianca has no interest in letting anyone get close to her. Ryan also isn’t interested in a relationship. You don’t always choose who you fall for though!

This is a fun YA sweet romance. It’s well thought out and has a great storyline. I highly recommend this book. I can’t wait to read the next in the series!

It’s a neat trick to turn a character that’s hated in one book into the beloved star of another book. You’ve got to somehow dive deep into the character to show how she was actually - but logically - misunderstood in the first book while also, if needed, give her the right impetus to change to the extent needed in the later book. Somehow Anne-Marie Meyer and Maggie Dallen pulled this off superbly in The Running Back and the Prima Donna (The Ballerina Academy Book 2). I detested Bianca in book 1 of this series yet she morphs perfectly into a superbly brittle yet good at the core sympathetic character in book 2. Superbly written this is one heck of a fantastic sweet YA romance that I’m happy to highly recommend.

Honestly, I’m surprised my eyes were that sensitive with tears for this book. I know it’s is a cliche ya romance, but who doesn’t love that? A smug boy and an ice queen 😍.

Very innocent book and a fast read! I recommend it. Bianca is so relatable to my elemtary school years where I wanted to escape from my reality. I killed that I had cool birthday parties with my imaginary friends. I lied that I was rich and well, I ended up accepting my reality like Bianca. I think I like her more than Ryan simply because I relate to her much more. Although I wish the story is flushed out more, I have no regrets reading this story

A good clean YA about Ryan, who has been hurt by his father abandoning him, trying to break down the wall of Bianca, the mean girl diva prima donna, who has a secret life. Ryan thinks she's too uptight and challenges her to change when he finds out she's a secret pageant queen.
I really enjoyed the bantering between these two characters and the continuity of other characters from previous book. I would highly recommend it.

Bianca and Ryan disliked each other from the moment they met. He thinks she's an uptight mean girl and she thinks he's just a stupid flirtatious jock! When he accidentally finds out she has a secret, one that can potentially ruin her prima donna/diva reputation, he decides to use it to his advantage and blackmail her...but in the end, he ends up hurting himself more than her! Great YA read!

Cute romance.

I loved how Ryan was so sweet with his sister. I never would have guessed though that Bianca had financial problems. But I did guess that Bianca and Colette would become friends. The writing style was actually good and I like how they showed real problems. Does everyone in this series have daddy issues though😭? Anyway overall 3.5-4/5
