US Marshals Madison James and Jonas Quinn are thrust into a high-profile case when they are called on to transport two prisoners across the country on a private plane. But when the plane experiences engine trouble en route from the Pacific Northwest to Colorado, the pilots crash-land the aircraft deep in the heart of the sprawling Salmon-Challis National Forest.
When Madison and Jonas regain consciousness, they find both pilots and one prisoner dead--and one fugitive on the run. They'll have to negotiate the rugged and remote backcountry through Idaho, Wyoming, and Colorado while tracking a murderer who is desperate to disappear--and will do anything to stop them.
This high-octane game of cat-and-mouse from bestselling and award-winning author Lisa Harris will have your heart pumping as you try to catch a fugitive with nothing to lose.

THE ESCAPE by Lisa Harris is the first book in the US Marshall series. It is a Christian action adventure suspense novel that moves quickly between the states of Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and Texas. Two US Marshalls are assigned to a prisoner transport from Seattle to Denver when their plane crashes. What follows is a week of non-stop suspense, stress, and action. Madison James and Jonas Quinn are the protagonists in this novel. Both are US Marshalls and the point of view switches seamlessly back and forth between them. They are easy to like and root for, and were credible and relatable. The author does a good job of giving them depth including flaws and virtues. While Madison was a strong protagonist in a lot of ways, there were occasions when I felt she should have been portrayed more strongly and less in need of help. The secondary characters are not as well-developed in this first novel, but they enhanced the story. Hopefully, some of them will get more depth in the next book in the series. The world-building was great and ranged from rugged and remote backcountry to busy airports. The internal and external conflicts were well defined and were organic and believable; arising out of characterization and circumstance rather than feeling forced or contrived.
I also learned about the US Marshall Service and their fugitive investigations and how they work with other law enforcement agencies. The author weaved this into the story line without detracting from the flow and action.
Overall, this was an action-packed and entertaining novel with the hint of a future romance that kept me fully engaged. The story was compelling and a great start to a new series. I highly recommend this to those that enjoy action-packed suspense stories. The expected publication date is November 3, 2020. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

While I’ve enjoyed Lisa Harris’ prior stand-alone books, I was really looking forward to the start of this new series. This may have not been my favorite by the author, but it was still suspenseful and interesting. I was happy to notice that there was a lot less awkwardly timed romance parts in this novel. (An example of what I mean would be the one you see often in romantic suspense books of “we just finally caught the bad guy and now we kiss!” *cue fade to black screen*. There was one moment I wanted to tell Madison and Jonas, “hey, eyes on the stake out! not each other!”, but only one moment compared to the book being filled with them, was a nice change of pace. This is probably due to this being the first book of a series.) I wish there had been a more faith content, but I enjoyed the discussion about being called to be in the law enforcement field that Madison and Jonas had. “The Escape” was a good suspense book and I look forward to reading the rest of the series as they release.
*BFCG may (Read the review to see) recommend this book by this author. It does not mean I recommend all the books by this author. *I received this book for free from the Publisher (Revell) for this honest review.
The Escape was my first read of a Lisa Harris book. Yes I know, what exactly was I waiting for? Madison and Jonas are US Marshals . They've been assigned to transport two convicts but the plane crashes in the Salmon-Challis National Forest. One convict dies upon impact the other escapes. The marshals must not only survive the elements but track their man who always manages to stay one step ahead of them through disguises and help from those he knows. Your adrenaline will be pumping as your read about elaborate schemes, kidnapping, terror and danger. Who can you really trust to tell you the truth when you question others? Are they just pacifying you with the answers you want to hear while actually reporting back to the hunted one? I literally could not put this down and read it in one day, just one more chapter turned into a night of reading. Adrenaline junkies you'll find your fix here! I liked the slow burn in the romance as well between the marshals too, nothing rushed. She is still mourning the death of her husband and he's still getting over a breakup. They are letting God direct their actions and healing slowly and naturally but you can feel a spark will ignite in a future book in the series. The Escape was an exciting book and I look forward to continuing this series.
Pub Date: 03 Nov 2020 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. Thank you. All opinions expressed are my own.
'Sometimes the darkness seems so much stronger than the light....But God is so much bigger than the darkness.'
I had never read this author before, but the book's cover and synopsis convinced me to give it a read. It was a really good book. I love a good suspense novel and this one fit the bill admirably. Two US Marshals are on a plane escorting two prisoners when the plane crashes, leaving only the marshals and one prisoner alive. And he has escaped. From then on, the action never lets up. This prisoner was an especially bad dude, too.
I was completely fascinated by the office of the US Marshals. The authors goes into detail about their roles and I was so interested that I looked them up on my own. I learned a lot and so glad I read this book. Be warned: there are more in this series to come and the reader will see this at the end. I am eagerly awaiting the next one in the series. I do recommend this book.
*My thanks to Revell Publishing for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinion in this review is entirely my own, and I received no compensation.
Madison James and Jonas Quinn, both US Marshals, are assigned to transport two dangerous criminals by plane to a new destination. After the plane crashes, Madison and Jonas must track an escaped murderer in the wilderness and beyond to try and keep him from killing anyone else. At the same time, Madison still doesn't know who killed her late husband. However, clues have been turning up.
This is a fast paced, action-packed Christian thriller with many twists and turns. It was hard to put down and I stayed on the edge of my seat. There are interesting and surprising developments, and the characters are very well written, especially the "villain." There is a hint of romance and a gentle Christian message of the hope God can provide in dark times. It is the first book in the U.S. Marshals series by Lisa Harris, and I can't wait to read the rest.
I received a free copy of this book from Revell via Netgalley. My review is voluntary.
Wowzers! This book is a literaly race from opening page to almost the final page. Follow US Marshals Madison James and Jonas Quinn as they race through the Pacific Northwest across the country in pursuit of an escaped prisoner. All three were in a transport flight that crashed. And the race is desperate and down to the wire. Add it moments of romance laced tension, and this is a book that romantic suspense lovers will enjoy -- and it builds to the next book...one I'm itching to read!
Lisa Harris kicks of her latest suspense series with her usual bang. High impact and constant chills fill this story from start to finish. Madison James and Jonas Quinn are US Marshals assigned to fly two felons to be expedited from Seattle to Denver. But the flight doesn't go as planned, and Madison and Jonas find themselves wrapped up in a manhunt they never expected.
I appreciated that suspense was front and center and the little bit of romance definitely played in the background. Turning pages as fast I could, Damon Barrick was one step ahead of Madison and Jonas every time they turned. The MC's had such a great working connection as well as a personal one. Both had been through tragic relationships and were still recovering. The role the black rose played was really creepy, and I am frustrated to know that I have to wait until the next book to find out the story behind the rose.
Highly recommended for all readers who enjoy clean, riveting suspense.
**I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions are mine alone. I was not compensated for this review.
The Escape is chockful of non-stop action from the beginning, and I am not complaining about that on any front. This was so much fun to read, and now I have to wait for the next installment! The in-depth characterizations of Jonas and Madison were excellent and how their relationship slowly and organically moves from friendship to possibly more moved at such a perfect speed (in my opinion). I am really anticipating reading book two.
The Escape is a great start to the US Marshals series. As it starts, it is the anniversary of the murder of the husband of US Marshal Madison James. Someone has been leaving a black rose on his grave but this year someone leaves a black rose on her bed. Before she has too much time to think about it she is assigned to transport two prisoners from Seattle, her home office, to Denver. On the same assignment, US Marshal Jonas Quinn, newly operating from the Seattle office, is making the trip. Quinn trained Madison when she was first in the Marshals service so they are acquaintances. The unthinkable happen when the small plane goes down over Idaho, killing the two pilots and one of the prisoners while the marshals survive and one prisoner escapes. The two marshals along with other law enforcement officers chase the prisoner across three western states and eventually to Texas. What a slippery person he turns out to be, charming women from the past to help him, taking hostages and advantage of anyone he can bringing danger and harm in his path. Madison is still dealing with her husband's death and Jonas has his own demons to deal with but the two connect on a level that they hadn't with others as they fight their way to bring the prisoner in and stop his escapade. Action packed with danger, twists, turns and likable, realistic characters, and faith, I highly recommend this entertaining read. There is a little cliffhanger at the end as the mystery of Madison's husband's murder is still unsolved. I received a complimentary ARC from Revell Publishing through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
Great story with plenty of twists and suspense. But a cliffy! ugh!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This book has all the makings of a great story. Suspense, police procedures, and maybe even a little romance with the two characters that were thrown together in a fast and furious chase across many states.
But the romance was not to be. At least not yet. The author drew the interest between these two out further and further, much to the frustration of this reader.
But Harris caught my attention with the chase. There were so many great areas of suspense. From one locale to another, she keeps you on your toes. Crime sprees and mayhem created a frantic rush to find the escapee with plenty of plot twists to keep the reader engrossed. I finished this one in one sitting!
Plus with the added plotline surrounding the death of Madison’s husband, and strange occurrences happening to her, the story was captivating and gets your heart rate up there a bit.
While I was looking for more between these two characters, we are left hanging with a small cliffy that leaves you wondering. The romantic interest is growing between them, but this is just the beginning of this series. I am seriously hoping more will be developed as the next books come out.
They are a fabulous team and you just know the sparks will be flying. Madison and Jonas are just ripe for some hot combustion!
For some great action, suspense, and the love of cop fiction, The Escape is a terrific read!
I feel like this book breaks away from Harris' usual mold, but I was so here for it. The beginning starts out with the action, and the plot progresses quickly. I very much enjoyed both of the main characters and was able to connect with them both in different ways. Madison's backstory grabbed my heart and had me rooting for her and feeling protective of her throughout the story. Jonas is such a sweet and stand-up guy, and I found myself falling in love with him. Why are these good dudes always fictional?? The story is filled with suspense to the last page, and that cliff-hanger really got me! What a massive plot twist for the last pages of the story. I can't wait until book two to continue on with these characters and this storyline. Highly recommend for fans of sweet romance and a whole lotta suspense!
FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
“Everything they did as marshals was strategic in order to ensure the safety of everyone involved. She had to rely on her skills, her teammates, and her faith in God.”
This was one edge-of-your-seat suspense that hit the ground running! A prisoner transport gone wrong after a small plane crash, has U.S. Marshals Madison James and Jonas Quinn tracking a prisoner through the wilderness. It was non-stop action as they pursue this crafty criminal through numerous situations. Ms. Harris has come up with a wonderfully scary bad guy but she has fashioned her protagonists as resourceful and capable. The romantic angle was a slow build which is plausible for the short time frame. But even though one case sees a conclusion, we are promised more to come with Madison and Jonas in the other books in the series. A teaser for the next book is included. One of the best stories yet from this talented author. *I won this book from Kav Rees at BestReads. All opinions are my own.*
This book y'all! It is sooooooo good! I picked up my print copy from the post office and I just loved this book! I couldn't out it down until I finished it! I'm like wow! This book deserves more than 5 stars because of the solid writing that Harris does. I like that her characters are realistic and at they have feelings just like the people do in real life. I enjoyed the the plot and all of the characters. Harris sure knows how to keep her readers interested! So many twists and turns! Just like a roller coaster ride. Some of these I never saw coming! I love books like this! My favorite is Jonas! And next of course is Madison. They're each trying to heal from their losses and it's not easy. Grief can suddenly hit you in your tracks when you least expect it that's for sure! I think we can all relate to these characters in that regard. It's never easy to lose someone no matter what the case may be. Harris describes the scenes so well! Makes me feel like I'm watching a movie only the book is so much better! Besides, I love using my imagination too. That's so much fun! I definitely enjoyed this adventure! I was sad to see this adventure end but on the positive note, I'm glad there's going to be another Madison book! I'm so glad that this wasn't the only book that is going to be written for I had a feeling that it wasn't the end of Madison's story. I would've hated to see her drop off so suddenly. She s my heroine! My thanks to Netgalley and Revell for a copy at his book. I was NOT required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own
I really enjoyed this fast-paced, twisty story by Lisa Harris. Madison James is trying to move on with her life after her husband was killed after leaving the hospital where he was a doctor. It's been five years and his murder has never been solved. But every year someone leaves a black rose at his grave, except this year. This time, the person left it on Madison's pillow in her bedroom.
But she doesn't have time to figure it out. She and fellow US Marshal Jonas Quinn are assigned to transport two fugitives from Seattle, Washington to Denver, Colorado. The plane crashes with only Madison and Jonas and one prisoner surviving. Madison and Jonas track the prisoner, but he backtracks and gets the jump on Madison, taking her gun.
This was a fascinating look at how the US Marshals department works. It reminded me a little bit of The Fugitive, except the escaped prisoner was truly a bad guy. And I enjoyed watching Madison come out of her shell as she finds herself falling for Jonas. And what's not to like about him!
He's the strong, silent type, but with a gentle heart. Madison is also a strong character and there's plenty of conflict as she fights her feelings. Great story!
This was a slow-build suspense novel that took a while to get into, but once the ball was rolling, I was invested in the main characters' objective to catch a very slippery escaped convict.
I liked it overall - good characters, engaging yet somewhat frustrating plot, slow-burn romantic tension between leads, and an intriguing overarching mystery for the series. Honestly, the last few chapters hooked me and made me eager to pick up the next novel in the series (probably sooner than I would have if these last few pages weren't included). All in all, The Escape was a compelling and good read.
The Escape is an action-packed thriller that follows two U.S. Marshals, Madison James and Jonas Quinn, as they pursue an escaped prisoner. It is the first book in the US Marshal Series. The partnership between Madison and Jonas is nicely drawn, reflecting their professional respect and personal admiration for each other, and hinting at a possible romantic attraction in future books. It is Christian fiction but not heavy-handed. It relies mostly on familiar thriller techniques, and the conclusion balances resolution with a setup for the next installment. Thrillers are not my typical fare, so I was looking for one that is not too extreme in terms of gruesomeness or graphic violence. I cannot say it inspired me to read more of them, but this book served the purpose.
I actually liked this cat-and-mouse chase story. Sometimes these can be redundant and make it seem like the good guys are stupid… but, I absolutely loved that the criminal was so smart. It did occasionally drag the slightest bit when the Marshals were stumped again, but maybe that was just because I wanted them to catch the guy. This was not as suspenseful as some books I’ve read, but the pace was good.
I’m beginning to appreciate the way Lisa Harris handles romance. She doesn’t go into the deep emotional depths of feelings, so while it at times seems the story just skims the surface, I personally like how this works in the romance field. They do have feelings, but they’re not top priority for the story.
The Christian message was in the book, but it didn’t stand out to me as super strong. The characters were Christian and were not ashamed to speak of their faith so that is a plus point.
I don’t often read the “chapter preview” for the next book, but I totally did for this one. I was so not ready to leave Madison and Jonas where they were left. So in other words, I’m looking forward to book two.
*I received this book from Revell and happily provided my honest review*
This story starts out with a bang and never lets up! The fast pace kept me flipping pages and trying to guess what might happen next as they chased the fugitive from one state to another. The two leads are equally strong characters and I enjoyed unraveling their personalities through the story.
I liked the unusual focus of the chase after a known dangerous felon instead of the general version of thriller (like a murder mystery). It kept me guessing through the book; I look forward to the next one in the series.
Wow, that ending....uh, okay. Book two can’t appear soon enough to answer that.
Thanks to the publisher for a free reading copy. A favorable review was not required.
Good start to the series! While it's great to read series that feature different main characters, it's a nice change of pace to have one that will focus on the same characters throughout.
This high octane cat and mouse game between the US Marshall and a fugitive is quite entertaining and an attention grabber.
It opens with two Marshalls transporting two prisoners across the country when their plane crashes, Madison James and Jonas Quinn survived, the pilots are killed so is one of the prisoners but Damon Barrick, the most dangerous one manages to escape thus launching a manhunt through forest, towns, airports, train and bus stations.
Although the subject is by far from original, the author has put quite a personal spin into her story. Things turns deadly along the way but no fear the two officers of the law quickly put their heads together and find a way to catch this slimy prisoner and bring him back to where he belongs…but achieving this goal becomes quite a challenge….and is very captivating for us to follow them.
The story presents a sidebar and is a real teaser: a black rose is left annually on the anniversary of Madison’s husband’s murder. Who is behind this act, can it be the killer and the one who was never brought to justice….This remains an unsolved and unresolved case at the end of the book leaving us believe it will spring up again sometime.
No doubt, this story is action-packed and is a page-turner. Well- written to captivate from the opening pages and holds you there till you reach the conclusion which ends in a cliff-hanger, of course, setting the stage for book #2. The characterisation is believable. The chase for Damon, a bit far-fetched but the exciting narrative makes up for all its faults. Well-done.
I received this ARC copy of this book from the publisher Revell via the first reviewer program for my thoughts.
US Marshals Madison and Jonas are transporting two prisoners by plane to a secure location in Denver, but when the plane experiences engine trouble and they are forced to crash land somewhere in between. Upon regaining consciousness, they find that one of the prisoners is dead, but the other has escaped.
A heart pounding, action packed adventure of survival, and trying to catch a cunning con artist murderer. This is a intense read, filled with suspense, mystery, and great tension.
Madison and Jonas are acquaintances, and this is their first time working together. Jonas knows that Madison is the perfect partner for this mission, as he trained her years ago and knows that she has sharp instincts, and is great at thinking on her feet. They make a great team, bouncing ideas off of each other, and listening to each other's input. I liked how Jonas stresses safety, how they grow to trust and depend on each other, as well as talk about their share values and beliefs.
Overall, this was a book that I didn't want to put down! Great characters, and high intensity action. I'm also very happy that this series will continue to follow Madison and Jonas, as they are a great team and have great chemistry. I will be counting the days until book 2 is available!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
3.3 BUT I am rounding up to 4 stars because it really has everything a thriller needs; I didn't like this as much as I normally like Harris. This isn't a reflection on her writing, but more personal taste and I did go on to read the other two. (I'm woefully behind in writing reviews and have at least 9 books in my to-be-reviewed pile, mostly books I read in June.)
The book blurb gives you all of the story you really need to know before your read this, because of course not knowing what's going to happen is always better in a thriller. This is a Christian thriller so you have a rough idea of how it will end but with none of the details. From right near the start to just about the very finish this book is nonstop moving and action. This is a trilogy featuring the same pair of Marshalls who are attracted to each other, so don't expect a full developed romantic sub-plot, just the start of one; that spans all three of them.
Since it's Christian, you won't find sex scenes, graphic violence (there is some violence, of course, since it's a thriller) or swearing.
From Seattle, into Idaho, all the way to Texas, two U.S. Marshals chase a murdering, escape-artist, mastermind criminal with the ability to charm his way into and out any situation with ease. They are always one step away, but not quite close enough.
I loved the piecemeal background stories of Marshals Jonas Quinn and Madison to grasp what they battle in their own lives. So well done.
The book begins with a mystery and ends in a mystery, the culmination of which we may get in the next book.
The Escape is the first book in Lisa Harris's US Marshals series and an action-packed read. The story started off really well and I couldn't wait to read more to see what would happen next.
I thought the characters were nice and the developing romance was good. The suspense was great in the beginning and towards the end, but I do think that I got a little bored with the "chase" of the escaped convict in the middle section. Just got kind of tedious…
All in all, The Escape was a good read and I definitely plan on reading book two.

The Escape by Lisa Harris was a fast-paced roller coaster full of close calls!
I borrowed this book from a sweet friend who read it in 3 days, so I set out to do the same! And I did!
I loved the mystery and the cat-and mouse game—not knowing the next move. The main characters really went the whole nine yards to try and capture the escaped fugitive. Both US Marshals were smart and quick on their feet. I like how well they worked together and it wasn’t a competition, but they truly had each other’s backs. They were open, honest, and dedicated to see justice served.
A few things that affected the star rating for me was some details seemed out of place and unrealistic to the storyline. I also felt like the writing style did a lot of “telling” and not “showing.” There were some disturbing scenes and such that came with the line of work. For the plot itself, it seemed to conclude very matter of fact. And lastly, the characters were hard for me to relate to and felt very scripted.
However, I appreciated the Christian content as it’s hard to find in the mystery/suspense genres.
I’m super glad I got the opportunity to read this book and can’t wait for book two! (What a cliffhanger!)
I think that this is the longest I've taken to read a book.
First off, I love Lisa Harris' books, really love them, and the facts she includes are wonderful, which is why I was so so so excited to see she was publishing a book focusing on US Marshals, I knew she would get it right.
And since my brother is really interested in the Marshals I have gotten lots of info on them.
But I started The Escape right in the middle of a reading slump, the worst reading slump ever, honestly. And I read about twenty pages, set the book aside, and repeat until today when I sat down to finish it.
Wow, I may not have started out enjoying it due to the reading slump but the skill that Harris' has in giving realistic suspense is still something I look forward to.
The cover, the plotline, the characters, and the suspense were spot on.
My only problem? That the next book isn't in my hands yet!
I look forward to reading the next book and hope that Lisa Harris' suspenseful precision in handing out a thrilling story.
I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary e/copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
The Escape is quite the exciting read! Trying to catch an escaped killer on the run from a plane crash made for quite a story line and hard to put down. Madison and Jonas are fun characters and I really enjoyed them in this story. Madison's back story peaked my interest especially with the mystery element that's sure to come out in the rest of the series. All in all, a good start to her new series. Looking forward to book 2!
I received this book from the publisher and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
Page-turning wow start of Lisa Harris' US Marshals series.
From Seattle to Idaho to Texas. During a prisoner transport, the plane crashes and a week long tracking of the prisoner who escaped. Marshals Madison and Jonas are on a manhunt trying to find a serial killer who uses women and their money.
There isn't a meet-cute in this since he was her training officer a few years ago. Their relationship is rekindled and they catch up on each other's back story. The race is on for the escapee.
