I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada with my husband and two children. I have a BA in Psychology and a certificate in Dramatic Scriptwriting. I very much enjoy writing erotic fiction and exploring the vast arena of sexuality and relationships.
Elizabeth Lister captures the charming awkwardness and insecurity of two young men just starting a relationship in her short story, Power Tool. Playing around with some light bondage, toys, and spanking gets both of their motors running, but the intensity of the feelings it brings up takes some time to process.
Told from Danny’s point-of-view, Power Tool is an intimate account of his reactions as he acts out some of his deepest fantasies with his neighbor, Travis Burke. What starts out as a quick and dirty hookup, evolves into the men experimenting with BDSM at its very basic level. Discovering the thrill of the power exchange, both men have to work through the feelings that the intimacy of dominance and submission bring out in them.
Travis’ obviously positive reception of Danny’s fledgling attempts at dominance is thrilling, but when it becomes overwhelming, he’s sweetly supportive of Danny’s need to step back. Travis takes over, gently guiding the play, and gives Danny the space he needs.
I love experiencing Travis’ reactions as Danny uncovers them. Travis is older, bigger, and more accomplished. It’s clear that being in charge is his default mode, so giving up control is really doing it for him.
Building a relationship that supersedes the sexual takes a bit of work and these opposite personalities flounder while trying to figure it out. Danny finds it hard to open up, not just to Travis but in examining his own reactions and feelings as the men interact. Both men aren’t expecting the emotional connection that grows as they share the intimacies of this kind of sexual relationship.
One of my favorite aspects of Elizabeth Lister’s stories is how she gets inside the minds of her characters and explores the positive as well as the awkward, ugly, and embarrassing moments that keep it real. Danny’s insecurity and elation as he processes this experience, as well as his impressions of Travis’ reactions are beautifully written.
Between the fun and kinky BDSM scenes, the growth of these characters and their relationship, and Danny’s heartfelt and personal account of his experiences, Ms. Lister scores again with Power Tool!
I loved the cute-meet in this story. I obviously relate to Danny here hahaha!! (Don't wake my ass up early, okay?)
The way Lister turned Travis and Danny's contentious relationship into insane chemistry was gorgeous. Plus, I adored how freaked Danny was about getting too involved. His panic was REAL.
These boys found each other and revealed each other's true selves in an entertaining, funny, and sexy way. Loved it ... and could go for a sequel :)
Man, if you are looking for a funny, snarky, sarcastic, enemies-to-lovers type book, this is the one for you. I laughed my butt off with these two neighbors. It was a great little book. Danny was ticked off at getting woke up at butt o’clock in the morning by some neighbor doing renovations with power tools. But what he didn’t expect was the sexy man, named Travis, doing them. But he was still ticked off at being woke up and with a hangover at that. And on top of it all, the dude was doing renovations in his undies! Did the man HAVE to have a great butt on top of it? And what started at ticked off ended in bickering like you wouldn’t believe. And every single day. They were constantly at each other’s throats. But what was under that bickering was chemistry you wouldn’t believe, and a need for each other and the kinks they were discovering in each other. But they were both scared of being intimate. As long as it came off as a casual thing they seemed fine. But anything else scared them. They got each other. But can they get past the scary into something more or is it going to have to stay casual forever when they both want more? It is so hard to be intimate with someone. You can have a fling with anyone at anytime, but to actually be intimate is a huge deal. So for these two, I get where they are coming from. They want so bad to be together and truly together. They get each other in ways no one else ever has before. But it’s scary to let your guard down and let yourself out there. But I loved these two so much. They actually were perfect for each other. They complimented each other so well, despite all the snark and bickering between them. It’s a short, fun story and I really enjoyed it. It didn’t need to be a long story because what was packed in this one, was right to the point and written the way it needed to be.
Travis and Danny were a lot of fun to read! The boldness tempered with vulnerabilities, the snarkiness and the honesty, the sexiness and the dynamics that work for them, overall, they were entertaining and sweet together 😊
Just like Danny thought to himself at some point in the book, the beginning of his relationship with Travis could easily be the plot of a porn movie. Two neighbors: the rowdy one, using a noisy power tool at the crack of dawn, and the cranky one,who just wants to sleep in on a Saturday morning...they start fighting but then sparks fly. And boy, does the book have all the elements of great porn! The heat and passion between Danny and Travis are incredible. Their interactions are so hot that the intensity radiates off the pages.
BUT! Power Tool is not just sexiness. Travis and Danny's connection is also a deeply emotional one. They seamlessly fit together, discovering new things about themselves everytime they're together.
Elizabeth Lister has done an amazing job at creating a fascinating combination of banter, growing feelings, soft touches and scorching need. Power Tool is romance and hot scenes written in a funny and entertaining way. I loved it and I really recommend it!
A very steamy opposites attract story! What is Danny to do when the new neighbor insists on making noise next door way too early on a Saturday morning? Confront him, of course! Little does he know his next door neighbor is smoking hot!
Travis is intrigued by his grumpy neighbor and sets his sights on turning his frown upside down. Why not offer him some homemade brownies! Oops – were those the pot brownies or the regular ones?
I really did not like Danny at first – too rigid, too antagonistic, too angry with everything. I liked seeing him start to open up, even if his feelings terrify him. I’d like to think this relationship does continue, that Travis is able to use his power tools to knock down the wall around Danny’s heart. Travis is so patient – eager to help Danny find happiness. The power exchange works well in their relationship, and I really think the two men will find a new path forward together.
