*This is a PLUS length novel--over 100,000 words long*** A woman trapped in the past A dark, intense warrior who claims she is his wife Will Caroline survive her stay in the parallel universe she has fallen into? Or will she be forever...Trapped in Time?
Dr. Caroline Lambert has a PhD in Astro-Temporal Physics but no clue about matters of the heart. Married to her work, she has built a machine called PORTAL, capable of opening a window into other universes. She believes it is only for observation, so imagine her horror when she finds herself sucked through the window and right into a whole other world--a world that seems stuck in the past, around the time of the Victorian era.
Now Caroline must deal with hoop skirts and elaborate etiquette, not to mention all the dangers of the past. It's a minefield of antiquated social mores and poisons used as medicines and cosmetics. But perhaps the most perplexing problem is the husband she has somehow acquired--a tall, dark Blood Kindred named Richard who claims she is his wife and refuses to let her go. For in this universe, the Kindred arrived 200 years earlier than in her own time and they have made their way into polite society...as Richard seems determined to make his way into Caroline's heart.
Will Caroline ever find her way back to her own time and universe? Will she succumb to Richard's charms and give in to the big Blood Kindred who claims her as his own? And what about the scheming mother she has in this world who is determined that she will leave Richard for a Viscount of questionable morals? Caroline doesn't know what to do, she only knows that if she cannot somehow open another window into her own world she will be forever...Trapped in Time.
Evangeline Anderson is a registered MRI tech who would rather be writing. And yes, she is nerdy enough to have a bumper sticker that says “I’d rather be writing.” Honk if you see her! She is thirty-something and lives in Florida with a husband, a son, and two cats. She had been writing erotic fiction for her own gratification for a number of years before it occurred to her to try and get paid for it. To her delight, she found that it was actually possible to get money for having a dirty mind and she has been writing paranormal and Sci-fi erotica steadily ever since.
Get lost in time This author has managed to draw me into a sub genre that I usually avoid. But who can resist a Tale of the Kindred no matter where, or when, it takes you. Not me obviously. The author has managed to hope us back in time with this book and yet she still brought the intensity to her characters and the story that we have come to expect. She really brought the Victorian era alive in this book and kept the story fast paced and engaging. Certainly another story that you won’t be able to put down until the HEA. I’m looking forward to the next book by this author.
Truly, this book needs a more intelligent heroine! I quit reading it 1/3 the way through the book. Surely the author can come up with hair raising situations that are saved by her cleverness.
Original idea of entering a parallel universe where society is a strict patriarchy similar to that of Victorian England. I love the different worlds created by Evangeline Anderson, because there's always something surprising and she seems to have an endless supply of ideas for how other societies in alien civilizations might be.
What bothered me is the romantic/sexy part, because it seems to follow the same sequence in every book in the Kindred saga. There's always the gentle persuasion and patience of the Kindred male and the hesitance/shyness of the woman in question. Then the oral worship of said woman...I'd love to see something shockingly different, something surprising for a change (a dominant Kindred?).
This is why I'm not rating this book higher than 3,5 stars, even though I'm a sucker for Kindred stories and their universe.
I loved the author's note about how she was inspired by the BBC period drama North and South and wanted to write a historical romance novel of her own, but she isn't known for HR. So she decided to sci-fi it.
I had seen this book a while ago and was always curious to read it, but wanted to wait until I read more of the previous books in the Brides of the Kindred series. Now that I'm almost caught up, I can read more of the Kindred tales. Lately, I've been finding that I like the main stories better because they're longer and the plots are more interesting and unique.
Dr. Caroline Lambert, a doctor in astrophysics, has developed a PORTAL that allows viewers to peer into other universes. The theory is that there are multi-universes layered on top of each other like an onion. (I wonder if that's true??) Caroline exchanges places with her bitchy doppelganger when her doppelganger is electrocuted in a storm and discovers she's the wife of a Kindred named Richard However, their two-year Joining period is almost over because they haven't consummated the marriage yet, and the "other mother" endlessly schemes for Caroline's marriage to Richard to be over and for her to marry another, more prestigious man. The doppelganger lives in a world akin to Victoria England but steampunk with creepy, mechanical servants, and windup carriages.
I loved how Lord Harkens's backstory resembled that of ! It was also interesting how Caroline was a demisexual, but the connection with Richard was so strong that she didn't need an emotional connection with him first to feel a sexual connection.
What would have made me give this book 4 stars would be more conversation about their pasts. Lol, this is my complaint in almost every romance novel. I'm a simple girl to please... make me believe these characters can talk for hours without running out of things to say, and we're good.
Richard was so stubborn and for someone who was supposedly super intelligent, Caroline did some dumb things. It was obvious to me that Richard was being called to help a mom give birth, but that went right over Caroline's head.
Not that I really mind, but I have noticed the pattern where Sophia, Kat, Olivia, and Sylvan are the only characters from the Mother Ship (and the OG books) that greet the hero and heroine of the current book at the end. Why doesn't Baird ever make an appearance? Or Deep and Lock? Lauren used to, but not much anymore. Or the more recent couples?
Dr. Caroline Lambert, a brilliant astrophysicist, invents the PORTAL, a machine capable of observing other universes. However, she's unexpectedly pulled through it into a Victorian-era world. Trapped in a time with strict social norms, archaic practices, and perilous customs, Caroline must navigate this unfamiliar terrain.
To her astonishment, she finds herself wedded to Richard, a charismatic Blood Kindred who insists she is his wife. In this alternate reality, the Kindred arrived centuries earlier and integrated into high society. As Caroline grapples with this bizarre situation, she faces the challenges of her scheming mother and societal pressures pushing her toward a Viscount.
Caroline yearns to return home and is torn between the allure of Richard's affection and the longing for her original universe.
While the concept of this book had potential, I couldn't help but feel a bit frustrated with Caroline's character. Here's a woman with an impressive background in Astro-Temporal Physics, yet she seemed strangely ill-prepared to adapt to the societal norms of the Victorian era she found herself in. I mean, if it's truly a life-and-death situation, you'd think she'd be a bit more resourceful.
As the story unfolded, I found Caroline's inability to blend in more effectively somewhat grating. On the flip side, I actually started to sympathize with Richard. He was trying to make the best of an unusual situation, claiming Caroline as his wife and all, and yet it felt like he was the one who needed to catch a break.
Despite these gripes, the book does offer an intriguing exploration of love, time travel, and the complexities of navigating multiple universes. While Caroline's character may have irked me at times, I couldn't deny that the story kept me engaged, making the book an overall enjoyable read, albeit with some exasperating moments.
Several years ago, I read a couple of time travel romances, but found I didn’t care for the genre. When I read the blurb to this latest Tales of the Kindred novel, I wondered how the author was going to make it work. Of course, as I discovered long ago, never underestimate the writing prowess of Evangeline Anderson. Not only did she pull it off with finesse, but she also added that Anderson flourish as well. Having read the introduction, the reader knows the heroine, Caroline, has a PhD in Astro-Temporal Physics and has invented a machine that allows us to view other universes. The reader also knows the hero, Richard, lives in another universe, but his Earth is still experiencing Victorian times. The twist? His Victorian times have some similarities to our own, but it also contains many cultural differences. Plus, not all the characters present in both universes have the same behaviors. Although this novel is definitely a full-length one, it reads so smoothly that I started it in the afternoon, almost forgot supper (thank goodness for leftovers), and continued on into the very late evening. It is definitely a keeper that left me trapped in the pages. This Kindred tale is one of Ms. Anderson’s best.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review
Being trapped in time, Caroline’s adventure is a very innovative Kindred read……. This is a very intense and captivating read its very original and it draws on all all of Evangeline’s expertise as she produces a book that incorporates being trapped within a different time within a parallel dimension. Caroline is not just having to deal with the complexities a very different time and lifestyle brings, it also has a very noticeable effect on the way women are considered. They are not expected to have the expertise of an Astro Physicist that has actually built a time machine of sorts, a portal that has carried her through time. One of her largest problems is the husband that seems to have come with this new time package and he is really keeping her on her toes, he is a dark blood Kindred called Richard and he refuses to allow her to leave him, she has found her way into his heart and he wants to keep her with him. However as Caroline’s heart starts to change regarding her husband Richard there is a very poisonous mother-in-law that is determined to do whatever it takes to be rid of her, However Caroline has never been one to back down from a fight and if she wants Richard enough she will let no one stand in her way. I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.
The moment Dr. Caroline Lambert said she wanted a type of relationship like the ones in the Victorian Era, I knew a rude awakening for her was imminent. Boy, was I right. Even in a parallel universe verbal abuse, sexism and classism are still lead behaviors of the wealthy. Lucky for Caroline, her other self had a sexy Blood Kindred to help protect her. Dr. Richard Vii is still very much a mystery to me. His background, and of those like him in this alternate universe - Terra born Kindred, are a new anomaly I hope are explored more in future books. It was a really neat twist on an already unique Kindred Tale. The chemistry between these two was smoking hot! Although, their circumstances were anything but ideal. Thankfully, everything worked out in the end. The only real issue I had with the story was Richard accusing Caroline of lying to him and betraying him by secretly portraying his wife. That’s not true. At the beginning, after the switch first happened, she tells him she has to get back, she wasn’t his. It bothers me that nobody brings that up when he is so angry with her for ‘not telling him’ because she did. “I’m not who you think I am—I’m not your Caroline!” she babbled, trying to explain.” Other than that, I adored every moment. I cant wait to find out what’s going to happen next!
Love and fate have no boundaries. This wonderfully well written story has a bit of Steampunk, Historical Romance, Syfy in it. You also have an honorable Kindred. A female from out of her time era who get subjected to some of the not so nice parts of Victoriana type era. This story keeps me guessing what would happen next. Lots of action and entertaining stuff seems to always be happening in this story. Well written self-contained story. I highly recommend this book to read.
Evangeline Anderson hasn't let me down with a single book in the Kindred series and this one is no different. From the start to the very end, I couldn't stop reading. Caroline and Richard are very well developed characters, and you feel their connection and struggles with every turn of the page. Don't want to give any spoilers so I'll just say it's a must read, along with all the Kindred stories, and you won't be disappointed!
The heroine is supposed to be an intelligent scientist. Instead she is repeatedly blurting out whatever she is thinking and putting her foot in her mouth. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know you don't tell a would be rapist you are a virgin. Nor should you give an advisory a heads up that you plan on defying them.
Please try making your heroines more self confident and sensible in the future.
I enjoyed reading this book , it has a good storyline. There is action, adventure and intrigue. The interaction and chemistry between Caroline and Richard is wonderful. I can't wait for more from this author. I received this book as a FREE ARC copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
Found the audiobook on Hoopla, and it was kinda fun if you don’t think about it too hard. Besides time travel, I’m a sucker for parallel universes. Didn’t realize it’s actually part of this HUGE series (that I don’t think I’m really going to read—sorry!), so I think that’s proof there’s just enough world building here that you can read the book as a stand-alone and not get lost. Every so often there’s a reference that (of course) is from previous books—like how the Kindred are technologically advanced, prefer curvy women and sometimes some women “bond” with two Kindred at the same time, LOL—but doesn’t take you much out of the story. I was originally thinking 3.5 stars but the way Richard, in the final third of the book, is angry when he learns 21st century Earth-Caroline—a demisexual who has dream-shared with him for years and TOTALLY has the hots for him—is not HIS Caroline—the wife who was repulsed by him and counting the days till she could divorce him—annoyed me. Was he duped? Yeah, technically, but I would think he would’ve come to terms with it fairly quickly, especially with the whole dream-sharing thing, and he would’ve realized “OHHHHHH—it’s THIS Caroline I’m in love with, I KNEW I was on to something.” Otherwise he has just been a glutton for punishment. I am tempted to see if Richard turns up briefly in any future books as I would love to know how he’s faring in the modern world.

This was really fun, unlike any other romance I've read, it sucked me in from the very beginning and I enjoyed it. Just don't think to hard about the logic! I read this as a standalone.
FMC goes back in time to an alternative universe where she swaps places with a doppelganger and has to live her life (including her husband). There was some cool worldbuilding and I liked the intersection of real (but wacky) Victorian practices, and fake (but wacky) sci fi stuff.
The FMC was a bit stupid - she kept saying things which made it really obvious she wasn't who she was supposed to be. But I suppose that's probably what I would do as well! The third act breakup went on a bit too long for me.
TW: attempted sexual assault by side character, non consensual drug use, abusive mother, fat shaming
I was originally going to go with 3.5 stars on this, but because I enjoyed the change in story line, I'm going to stick with 4. For me the change in story line was a parallel universe. Normally the Kindred books are a Kindred and a human going on a mission or encountering different species, etc., this wasn't that and it was a nice change.
I was a little put off with how everything had to be explained to him when he landed on the Kindred ship. Seemed like filler to re-hash everything we already knew. Could have done a condensed version.
Caroline builds a PORTAL that allows you to view other parallel universes. She gets sucked into the PORTAL and finds herself with a kindred warrior. He had been talking to his wife who is Caroline in his universe and an exact look a like. His wife is sucked through the PORTAL to the other universe after being struck by lightning. You will have to read the book to find out what Caroline goes through in this Victorian era and what all happens with the kindred warrior. Really great book!
I enjoyed this book. I thought it was a change of pace which is why I skipped to this one. Several of the previous books in this series had the characters running around half naked and just wanted smithing a little more conservative. Thank you MS. Anderson for continuing to write these stories and keeping the variety going. I also like that the very first characters in the Kindred series are kept in play.
This story is a difficult romance due to different timelines with Earth being in the same point. Falling into an Victorian Era with the Kindred Ship above Earth having made an agreement with the King after they saved Humananity. Hopefully the mess gets sorted out in time.
Eh.... it's not the worst nor the best soft porn romance. It's got time travel/alternative earth & aliens so that's fun. But more importantly and why I'm actually bothering to record this one as read when I skip a lot of the s.p. stuff is this.... it's where I first read about demisexuals. And then realized that's what I am. Mind blown. So... worthy for that alone.
I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobooks of this title. (Goodfm)
Normally time traveling is within the one realm, between different times. However, this time travel is between different times and realms, to join a Kindred with his destined mate.
Off course, there's a lot more to the story, but as usual, the Goddess helps those that believe.
I have no idea what I even just read. I’m not a romance reader anymore but used to read them exclusively years ago. I don’t know if they’ve changed or this is just a very eclectic author. This book is just a hodgepodge of genres all mashed together. It did hold my interest enough to finish the book though so I gave it 2 stars for that.
Trapped in Time is the first book of Evangeline Anderson that I have read. It was a very different and amazing read. I could not put it down. I look forward to finding out more about her and her other books and collections. I would suggest to all Sci-Fi fans to seek her out.
I guess you can “Sci-fi” anything. And who knew Ms. Anderson could write such a well rounded Victorian/Sci-fi. Of course Caroline is from the universe we all know and love from this author but when she is thrown into an odd but familiar parallel universe the story takes a twisted and sexy turn. Great read.
I really enjoyed this book! I love Sci-fi books, and especially Kindred books. I loved that the heroine was in a version of Victorian England, but with a steam-punk twist!
Full of adventure and turns in the road. Will she win is heart or will she lose him forever. It will be a book I reflect on in my own life. The daily struggles we have in today's world can be reflected into this book. I have not regretted picking up this series and the main series also.
A mixture of Pride & Prejudice, Time Travel, and some erotica. The story of Caroline and Richard (from different multiverses) kept me reading to see what was happening next, which is good. Enjoyed this book and look forward to the next book about Emmaline.
What a cluster that had to be turned around, love the way that it went. Watching those from the mothership working to get Caroline back and trying to be able to keep Richard there too. The Goddess does work in mysterious ways.
