Raven Academy #1

Magic Misfit

Rate this book

The Raven Academy could save my life… if it doesn’t kill me first.

Waitressing might pay my bills, but it’s my cage fighting at night that really cranks my gears. Until some weird hidden power helped me win a fight. Now no one wants to step in the ring with me.

And my life is going from weird to worse. The same night a werewolf tried to tear out my throat, a guy shows up telling me magic exists AND goes on to prove it. And, oh yeah, my life is in danger now that my abilities have started to show.

Apparently the answer is for me to follow this hottie professor to some Raven Academy and learn magic. School was never my jam, but at least this one comes with a hot demon who’s helping me train and a sexy fellow student who seems to be interested in more than just study hall. Throw in Professor Sexy Pants tutoring me privately to improve my magic, and it’s every girl’s dream.

Until I find out I’m part of some save-the-world prophecy, and the fate of all supernatural creatures rests on my shoulders. Great.

If my sexy consorts and I can’t pummel my magic into shape soon, we’re all doomed…

Magic Misfit is the first book in the Raven Academy series, a reverse harem romance with a university-age heroine having all the fun. Get this book if you like kick-ass heroines, steamy heroes, and smexy scenes so hot they’ll steam up your e-reader,. All characters are 18+.

Boring.

Sounded interesting, but I disliked a majority of the characters. The guys were complete arrogant a$$hats, and even then she ended up sleeping with one (and I’m sure the other two will make the cut in the next book). The side characters were pretty blah, and they just seemed to be poor imitations of some of the other ‘academy’ series I’ve been devouring lately.

I couldn't put it down! It does leave you on a cliffhanger, but not a horrible one.

Dante, Bane, and Gareth are all trying to teach and guide Delaney on her newly formed witch powers. She is the center of a prophecy that could save or destroy the world as we know it. She is being hunted by an unknown person at the Raven Academy, where she is learning how to be a witch. There are fights, magic, and steamy encounters sprinkled throughout the book. I loved every moment of it!

I really enjoyed Magic Misfit very much. I know it kept my attention until the end, and left me needing more.

Our female lead Delaney is a MMA fighter, who may or may not have had alot of losses and one win. But she does not let that stop her, she just keeps going. I like that about her. I like her attitude and wit.

So far there is just one love interest but we all know there could be room for more.

The fight scenes are well written, there are plenty of laugh out loud moments, and just overall a really good read. I cannot wait for book two.

Amazing

This book is so good! I love that the men are possessive AF and that the MC just kinda sucks at everything but at the same time she just goes with it. Can’t wait to read more in this series

I really enjoyed this book. With a great level of sarcasm and sassiness, this author has definitely captured a brilliant personality in these characters especially the leading lady. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with these characters. An amazing performance from Meghan.

Original review

This book was provided by the author through Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. Thank you A. Caprice and Xpresso Book Tours!

Magic Misfit
is the first book in the Raven Academy series and tells the story of Delaney and her three men, Bane, Gareth and Dante.

Magic Misfit is the first book I’ve read by A. Caprice and I liked it! The synopsis sounded really interesting and I wanted to know more about Delaney and her men. I liked the story in general and the characters too, but I missed something. The story had so much potential, but there were a few things missing for me.

I usually really like the main character but I just couldn’t connect to Delaney. I was often disappointed by her and she couldn’t manage to do one thing right… As for the men, I really liked their descriptions. I could easily see myself falling for them, although I didn’t really like their possessiveness. Don’t get me wrong, I often like it when there are alpha males in books, but not in this one.

Although I have mentioned a few things that I didn’t like about this book, I still liked the ending. It makes you want to read the other books in the series. I think that this book was good but there are a few things that could’ve been better. However, I’m still looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

** bought the audiobook for this reread. Safe to say I regretted it a little. I am not a huge fan of Meghan Kelly as a narrator. ... She always sounds confused and surprised (not a natural MFC voice) her male voices were slightly better.

3.5
This book had its moments, but at times it just felt hollow, like it was missing something. Despite this I still enjoyed it and will probably read the next book.

Things I liked:
- I liked that the students actually went to class and those classes had detailed descriptions
- the humor had me chuckling out loud a couple times

Things I didn't like:
- her relationships were kind of insta love, like there wasn't any build up. More telling than showing?
- there wasn't any motivation behind the big bad, it never explained why he did the things he did.

Really enjoyed the author's writing style - the humour, suspense and character building was strong and kept me interested.

It was a refreshing concept to have the main heroine be a MMA fighter, it gives her a bit of snark and I would kill for confidence like hers...even if it's all bs. Delaney would definitely be a glass half full type of person. Surprisingly, we don't learn much about Delaney and her role in the prophecy as much as I would have liked. I hope we get to explore this more in the 2nd book.

I enjoyed getting to meet the guys where we are sometimes gifted with a POV from them - I think it really polishes their tone and type of character they are. In this book, there was a greater focus on Dante whilst others took a back seat. I'm looking forward to see learning more about them.

I received this book to review from Xpresso Book Tours, and was immediately captivated by the beautiful cover. It depicts all things wonderful about Urban Fantasy:
Intriguing✔ Amazing Font ✔ Magic ✔ Bad-ass Redhead✔✔

Clearly, I really wanted to like this book, and I did. . . to an extent. I am totally use to reading books that I absolutely love but still feel the need to roll my eyes at times throughout. And that's okay with me. Magic Misfit, however, had my eyes rolling around so often I thought I was on a merry-go-round. So, let's just jump right in, shall we?
Likes

Great Opening Scene
Magic Misfit kicks off with Delaney Jones kicking ass. I was thrust right into who Delaney is from the very beginning and immediately got a look at her awesome humor and some of her relatable flaws. I mean, her nickname is Delaney "Giantslayer" Jones, and she's the only one knows it. I was excited to see a funny, smart, and tough female protagonist right from the start.

The Intro To Magic
I enjoyed learning about the magic along with Delaney and could genuinely feel her uncertainty, excitement, fear, and all the other emotions that would run through one's mind when they first learn they are a witch. At first, she tells herself that it's all a fluke, that she can't possibly be responsible, but when the truth is shoved in her face, she immediately is intrigued to learn more. And she take's it all like the champ that she believes she is.

The Sidekicks
Delaney's sidekicks are great! Hazel and Quincy quickly befriend Delaney when she gets to her new school and are by her side throughout the whole story. They have a connection from the their long years of friendship that I found endearing and instead of being the dopey friends to the know it all protag, it was the complete opposite. Hazel and Quincy are smart and capable and honestly do most of the grunt work for her. If Caprice ever comes out with a book focused on the two of them, I will definitely read it!

The Overall Plot
I found that the overall story line certainly had potential. A young woman who doesn't know she is a witch is suddenly thrown into this magical world, thought to be the one who may save it. Yes, it's been done, but with the right twists it can be a fun read. And this story has all the makings for a great story, at first. Everything doesn't come natural to Delaney while learning magic so there is plenty of character arch potential and her reactions to the different trials and conflicts are spot on.

Dislikes

The Protagonist
Delaney could have been a great protagonist. There was so much room for her character to be expanded on but ended up falling flat. I was disappointed to learn she never really got better at anything she tried. At the first of the story, she wasn't great at magic, just had this power within her that she didn't know how to control. But, after rigorous training and so many different people working with her, you would think she would have excelled at something. But. . . she didn't. Nope. Not one thing. The one thing she did have going for her was her wit. Her sarcastic personality and snippy commentary gave me a major Buffy vibe which earned big points in my book.

The Insta-lust
I am a sucker for a good love story. And if you can mix a bad-ass super heroin with a hunky paranormal heartthrob then sign me up for binge reading into the wee hours of the morning, but the love-quint-angle??? (1 girl + 3 guys, love-quint? I don't even know) was just too much. This girl practically fell head over heels for not one, not two, but three guys. And before she even got to know a one of them! Her infatuation with these men (who alone could have been alright characters, especially Bane) and their returned infatuation with her, was just so unbelievable. And she actually entertains the idea of having all of them, even after she gets far more intimate with one. This concept is forced and not for me at all.

The Possessive Guy Routine
The men in Magic Misfit are the flattest characters of them all (with the possible exception of Bane, I think there is more to his story) Two of them are too busy fighting over Delaney, actually using the term "She is MINE" on multiple occasions, to really commit to the overall story goal. And the worst part, she is totally okay with their pig-headed possessive attitudes. She gets cozy with each of them on different occasions form the very beginning, before she even knows them, which takes her kick-ass independent woman attitude and contradicts it with a love-crazed brain-dead teenager. Again, each character, on their own, had potential to be great, but the way they were portrayed prevented me from liking any one of them.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I enjoyed Magic Misfits. It was funny, and exciting with two strong secondary characters to support the not-so-bright main character. The idea is good but could have been so much better. There are a few editing errors in the digital download but none so big they pulled me out of the story. There are a few tense changed that actually had me doing a double take, though. Most readers probably wouldn't have noticed them, but me being a writer as well, I noticed big time! But it all came down with her relationships with Bane, Dante, and Gareth that made me decide this would be far from a 5 Book review. At the time of this review it's free on Kindle Unlimited so you may want to check it out, the things that bothered me may not bother everyone and again, overall it was a fun read.

Magic Misfit: A Reverse Harem Academy Romance
Raven Academy, Book 1
By: A. Caprice
Narrated by: Meghan Kelly

I enjoyed this book immensely, the story grabbed my attention right from the start and captivated it to the end, leaving me interested in what is to come in the next book. A. Caprice is a gifted author with an imaginative mind, the storylines and characters she created are original and fascinating. Delaney Jones was barely making ends meet, her hopes were to make it big in MMA cage fighting. After a bang up fight, her life is forever changed, she is not only attacked by a bizarre creature but she is approached by a guy claiming magic exists and she was selected to go to the Raven Academy to learn more about her magic. Clueless about magic she goes with it anyway and she is faced with more challenges, rival students, the inability to perform any magic and three hot guys, a professor, a demon and a fellow student. Adding to all this new found excitement is an old prophecy and the fact that she is in danger from who has yet to be determined. This book is the first in the series, it lays down the foundation, introducing the key characters, I am looking forward to learning more about her men and what part they play in it all. It also raises questions of who and why are they after Delaney. There is never a dull moment in this book, the story is cleverly plotted with plenty of drama, some angst, action, twists and turns, mystery, some heartfelt and emotional moments and a slow burn to what is going to be a hot romance, reverse harem style. Thank you A. Caprice for this great story.

🎧📚🎧 I listened to the Audible edition, Meghan Kelly is a talented narrator and a versatile voice artist. She performs the voices for all the characters and is fabulous at covering both the female and male roles, giving each their own distinct voice making it easy follow along and tell who is who. Her portrayal of the characters is spot on, she grasps each character’s persona and plays that role with perfection, sounding just as I picture them to sound. She also brings out all of their emotions which is heard in her performance. She is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another awesome listen🎧

I just don't know. I didn't hate this but I don't know if I like it either. I will say that its compelling enough that I will move on to book 2.

What is this book about?
Delaney - a human MMA fighter discovers she has magical abilities when a professor from a magic academy shows up to invite her to attend the magic school. There is an overarching plot of a prophecy involving her and she is being hunted because of this prophecy.

The World Building
Pretty decent. We have 3 realms: Lower world (demons, etc - Run by Hades), Middle World (Earth essentially with witches, warlocks, incubi, succubi, werewolves, shifters, goblins, and fae), and Upper World (angels, etc). We don't learn a ton about this other than the 1 time its described.

The Romance
This is a reverse harem romance with 3 love interests (so far). We have Bane (a teacher at the school but she is not in his classes), Dante(a fellow "student"), and Gareth (a demon). Each guy has his own story and some complexities. I will say that the romance plotline is a distant subplot to this series. There is no actual relationship development which gives this book a very instalove feel. Early on in the book, she meets each guy and just has this "instant connection" which led me to believe maybe this is a fated mates story but we don't find that out in book 1. She just accepts that she has feelings for each guy very early on and the only reason is physical attraction (unless fate plays a part later). Its very surface level and irritating. Hopefully the romance aspect of this series progresses and she forms actual attachments to these guys beyond how they look.

Also, I am listening to the audiobooks and this is a series where you really have to pay attention or you start to get really confused. Sometimes I can listen to books and multitask but I discovered this is not one of them. Really anything with extensive amounts of world building can be difficult to listen to while doing other tasks.

This book was provided to me by Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fun read while I'm stuck at home because of the Corona Virus. It was quick and easy with a whole lot of fantasy and that was just what I needed to read.

Writing style: The writing was decent. Nothing that blew me out of the water or anything, but not bad enough to DNF it 😂 There could have been so much more world-building and overall just more details but oh well it was okay.

Characters: I'm not attached to any of them, but I can see that the author put some time into giving each and every character a very distinct personality. What I appreciated the most was the consistency of the characters, they never did anything that would be considered odd for their personality.

Story: I usually dislike the Chosen One trope and this book didn't change my opinion on that per se but it also didn't make it worse. I also hate that books either have a incredible strong and special hero/heroine, or one that completely fails with everything. Delaney, the MC, falls in the latter category. The book was short enough that I survived both of my bookish pet peeves.

Reverse-harem: This is my first Harem book so I didn't really know what to think of it. The romance felt a little quick and, I don't know how to call it... Cheap maybe? Too fast? Wanting three guys is totally fine, it's a harem romance novel after all, but I did expect some growth of the relationships and just 'ooh I badly want him. Ooh he makes me tingle in all the right places'

This book feels like an episode of a brainless fantasy show that I'd totally binge watch when I have nothing else to do. Had I read this book at another time I might have given it a lower rating or even have DNFed it, right now Magic Misfit gets 3 stars from me.

Delaney is recruited to join the Raven Academy, a school dedicated to training witches to use their powers properly. While she’s there, the discovers that she is the subject of an ancient prophecy… which makes her the Chosen One TM.

When she arrives at the academy, she finds herself immediately attracted to her brand spanking new insta-love mates who are dedicated to keeping her safe and training her to use her powers so she can fulfil the prophecy.

The relationships are intense, but I found myself not loving the fact that 2/3 of the men in Delaney’s harem aren’t actually that nice to her and the other is possessive without actually making any effort yet she’s absolutely smitten. Call me a romantic, but I think that you should actually be actively nice to the other person before turning up in their dreams and poking them in their no-no place.

I listened to this book in audio and Meghan Kelly is an absolute delight – she voices both the male and female characters perfectly and really captures Delaney’s personality. Delaney is fiercely optimistic and can’t be kept down, even though the world seems to be trying its best to see her miserable and/or dead. Her perkiness is surprisingly endearing though I did find myself cringing in some scenes on her behalf!

Ok

Right now I'm debating if I like this series or not. I'm not understanding the world the story is set in. Is it the witches against every other supernatural? Or do the wars that break out vary in who allies at any given time? Why did the professor let the Lucas attack her when he went to get her? Why does she have so much bad luck? Why can she not seem to learn anything? Is she stupid? I mean, you can be physically fit and capable of fighting, but not be intelligent. Anyway, right now I don't know if I like our MC. She can be really funny and yet kind of an airhead too. As far as the guys, I don't like any of them right now. We know so little about any of them. I think that what is bothering me about this story is that a lot is happening, but our characters aren't really developing. Other than being physically attracted to each other, we don't know why they like each other. The story is just so random right now that I'm trying to figure out exactly what is happening.

The story is ok and I want to know what happens next. I hope the next book starts piecing together all the different plots that seem to be going on in this book.

Magic Misfit (2020) is a lot of fun. A. Caprice has written a strong heroine in Delaney. I love that Delaney is a MMA fighter with 48 losses and one win (laugh). She just keeps fighting and the world of magic needs a heroine like her.

Misfit is listed as a reverse harem, but Delaney only hooks up with one guy. She may like more than one, but she only gets intimate with one. Hence why I am not listing this as a poly romance. It has not crossed that line yet.

The fight scenes are awesome even when Delaney is not involved. Caprice writes a human hero who is just coming into her own at twenty-years-old. Her relationships with the guys are fun and funny. All of the relationships are still pretty surface level except her relationship with Gareth. Both of them can understand where the other comes from as their instinct is to fight.

I love this book and I cannot wait to see where Caprice takes us.

I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.

Title: Magic Misfit
Author: A. Caprice
Format: Audio
Narrator: Meghan Kelly
Genre: Paranormal Romance, RH
Standalone: Not really but ends at a good point
POV: Bane, Delaney, Gareth, Dante
Steam Level: Steamy
3.5/5

Magic Misfit is the first book in the Raven Academy trilogy. When Delaney learns she is a witch, she's dubious but agrees to go the a special school to learn magic. Think Hogwarts but for young adults and in New Orleans. Delaney had no clue the magical world existed and with the exception of one weird incident while she was cage fighting, she has no idea that she even has powers - let along how to control them. The problem? The prophecy says that she's either the savior or the destroyer of the magical world. Enemies and non-enemies are their to either sabotage or help her. The concept itself was intriguing and the story was good but I didn't buy into it - didn't get lost in the magical world. I enjoyed this book but didn't love it. It was a quick listen while I was working..

Amazing start of a new series!!! 🤩

This is the first A Caprice book I have read and I loved it!!!... You will love Delaney right away, she's sassy, badass, with a strong will and attitude, who takes no sh&$% from no one #girlpower 💪👊⚢... She's suddlendy thrown into a magical world she didn't know about, trying to learn to use her powers while being victim of strange magical "accidents" 😳🙈... And what about that strange prophecy?, Is she really the chosen one??? 🤔🧐... With three hot alpha male suddenly interested in her and trying to figure it out what the hell is happening at the Academy, oh and lets not forget the Magical classes she sucks at 😬😅😣... Delaney's story will keep you on edge the whole time, with lots of action, mysteries, new friends, incipient romance and a magical world full of secrets and danger 😲🤯... 💯 Recommended!!! 😍💖

Good Story

I really liked the plot in this story a lot. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because I was totally frustrated at the absolute lack of progress with our heroine's skills.
I understand moving at a slow pace, but I am just tired of these tropes that have the MC not realizing what she is capable of until the last book. As this is a relatively small complaint, and the plotline is really good, I will continue to look forward to reading book 2 with great anticipation.
Already have the second one, and I am hoping that I see significant progress in the follow-up. Also hope they all finally realize that without teamwork, this is a losing battle. Great sexy times in this book even if most of them were dreams.
I would totally recommend this book. Good action, snarky heroine, hot men, who can ask for more?

Audio book review

This audio caught my attention right away. The author A. Caprice wrote a great story. What I liked about it , the story didn’t take place in High School but in University. The heroine is strong not your usual school female. She’s working as an MMA fighter just a normal girl . Delaney doesn’t know that magic is around until a wearwolf attacks her . There is lots of action , fights , and twists and turns. Delaney finds out she’s a witch There are 3 men that want to protect her , Dante , Gareth and Bante because they know that Delaney has an important role in mankind. Little does she know that the men are her mates. How will she react to that. What role does Delaney have in mankind Meghan Kelly nailed this one . Her voice is unbelievable. She can carry an audio all by herself. Her tone for each character is fantastic. Can’t wait for book 2

This is my first book from this author but it definitely won't be my last. I absolutely devoured this book. Right from the start you're thrown into an intriguing world of the paranormal and prophecies. I loved Delaney and her wonderful quirkiness. She was the sassy female that just won't take mess from anyone and has a fantastic vocabulary. Raven academy has all the things you'd want in a school, including all the bad aspects. I really enjoyed the plot with its mystery that had you guessing the entire time. I look forward to book 2 to discover more about Delaney, her men and the prophecy. Fantastic first book and any fan of RH academy will really enjoy this, 100%!

Audiobook Review:

What a great start to a series. It was funny, steamy, fast paced, and extremely entertaining. I love a good reverse harem book. Especially of the paranormal variety. And while things aren't exactly cohesive on the RH front like I've seen in other books, I look forward to seeing how it will gel together in future books. More specifically if the guys can ever gel together. And it was all perfectly narrated by Meghan Kelly. I loved the different tones she had for each character and the high energy she brought to the leading lady. She had just the right sound to her voice for whatever the moment called for.

Great read!

I really enjoyed this book. It was a great start to what I'm sure will be an exciting series.
I loved Delaney, the lead female character. she was the perfect mix of strength, sass and a little vulnerability.
The story kept me engaged and looks set to be very interesting.
There was a nice amount of action to keep you gripped and the three lead guys were a good mix of protective and broodyi laughed out loud so many times with this one too. The writing is so witty and fun. I just loved it.
Cant wait to read the next one!

I really look forward to reading this author after she's become more practiced. I liked the solid opening, and the fact she doesn't make Delaney perfect, flaws are so much more fun to read. I loved the friendships, and the ending gave me a small surprise and a laugh that saved me from being entirely bored with the book.

But yes something was very boring in the middle to the point i was skimming most of the final book. I think if the author hones in on her humor more than the serious it'll really improve the experience.

A great read that put a spell on me from the very beginning, I never wanted to hit pause while listening to this audiobook version. The narration by Meghan Kelly brings the characters to love more then the words on the page do already. I couldn’t decide who I was rooting for more between Dante, Gareth and Bane. Delaney is one lucky lady to have these men surrounding and teaching her. There’s mystery intertwined with romance throughout the story to give it that sexy edge along with having your investigative senses on high alert.

This is such a great start to a series! I was hooked right from the start and sucked into the Raven Academy. The characters are so three dimensional, I felt like I knew them. Delaney absolutely rocks, she struggles and flails but never gives up. Her friends are fantastic, and I like where things seem to be heading with Gareth, Danté and Bane. Twists and turns galore with a nice dollop of suspense. This is my new favourite series. I can't wait for more.

A great start to a new series. This book is full of twists and turns and plenty of action.
We meet Delaney at her job who meets Bane on her way home as she's attacked by a werewolf. He then takes her to Raven academy where things go crazy. She meets Dante and Gareth while at the academy so with three hot men in her corner and her two new best friends will she survive her time at the academy. Pick up a copy and find out

Interesting

This was a good first book and the storyline is promising. The formatting in this book wasn’t the same as the majority of other e-books and I didn’t enjoy that. I think the storyline has promise, but I probably won’t read this first book again. I’ll read the subsequent books to find out what will happen. I’m not sure whether it was the formatting or the story that didn’t keep my interest.

4.5 stars!

Magic misfit was funny, steamy and had a decent plot. I liked the characters and there wasn't a disappointing cliffhanger. That being said I'm not jumping to read the next one. It had all the pieces I like in a RH but somehow failed to really suck me in. I'll add it to my TBR list. Hopefully the next will get me
