The Archangels are coming for the last Reaper, and they're out for blood.
Halek Cain and his crew jump into one slip tunnel after another to escape a psychopath with an armada of deadly warships. Every system is a trap; every encounter a potential battle.
When Cain and his friends receive a distress call from The Bold Freedom, innocent lives will hang on their every decision.
And Cain still has debts that need to be paid. People who helped him off the exploding prison station are going to die horribly if he doesn't pull of the impossible.
But they don't call him The Last Reaper for nothing. Experience this exciting beginning to a brand new series set in the Renegade Star universe. If you're a fan of Escape from New York, Renegade Star, or Deus Ex, you'll love this epic, scifi thriller.
What an exciting ride! A nice character driven story focused largely on an exploration at a deeper level of the ex Reaper’s personality and motivations. Cain finally comes to terms with himself and finds his place in the universe. Protecting and saving his new allies and humans from the ruthless and malevolent vice admiral and the Union government he represents is his priority. An intense, trepidant and gripping struggle and battle, both in space and planetside. A hard, embittered, loyal and focused team, it gains more recruits. A hard to put down book! And I already want to read Flight of The Reaper!

This series just continues to excite. I loved this one because the main character is growing emotionally but still kicking behinds. A lot of good action and intrigue to boot.
I really enjoyed the first 3 books of this series with Ray Porter as the narrator. The 4th book was ok. Maybe a little on the slow side but it was VERY difficult finishing the book with the new narrator.
He just doesn't have the same range of character voices that Ray Porter uses.
I keep these books are going to get predictable and boring. Predictable yes, but the characters are fresh and energetic so I keep coming back for more!
My favorite part of the Reaper series is the self-talk of the protagonist. I usually find myself skipping to the next dialog or action, but not in this series. Halek Cain is The Last Reaper, and he's one of a kind. He knows so much about fighting, assassination, his enemy the Union, and cigars. Beyond that he's a terrific leader of men (and women), and maybe the best melee fighter you know of. I never skip his self-talk. It's not quite as brilliant, speaking subjectively, in this book as the previous 3 installments. Still it's a 5-star series and this is a 4-star effort.
He realizes in this book that he's up against a kind of Super Reaper in the form of Vice Admiral Nebs. The union is chasing Cain with 3 carriers and dozens of space fighters.
When you're nice in sci-fi, the bad guys always use the same terrible argument to try to persuade you. "If you don't surrender, I'll kill all these nice people over here, and their blood will be on your hands." Um, if it's your hands that do the killing, it's on you, Bob. Not on me." And then if they go ahead and slaughter some innocents, it always looks to me like they forgot their goal. I wonder if at breakfast they say, "I'm going to try to get Cain to surrender today, but if he doesn't I can still have a fine day if I just slaughter some innocents without furthering my cause against Cain."
And of course, when Cain sees you be so cruel, he will be (choose one) more, or less willing to surrender to you in the future? Bad guys, pay attention. Your issue is with Cain. You can come back and slaughter the innocents after the book is over.
Cain realized in this story that he is at war with the Union. That he needs to have an army. A navy. A base and everything. And perhaps we might have found some allies in this book.
This was good but not as good as the others in this series, (because of the new narrator). Cain was busy running from Admiral Nebs and trying to save the ship that was about to hit by a comet at the same time. Of course, Cain got away, and stole Nebs's ship BUT Nebs got away, too.
No romance and the F-bomb was used 9 times.
As for the narration: How can I say this? After hearing Ray Porter read that first 3 books then having it changed to Tom Taylorson it was quite disappointing. Not that Tom doesn't have a nice voice BUT Ray gave every MAN his own voice and Tom had every MAN sounding the same. (His women's voices were great.) Also, occasionally, it would say that someone laughed and Tom never did. If you're not going to read with any kind of emotions there's no point in calling yourself a narrator. Just sayin'
Fun fast action! Easy fast read that makes you want more!
Book 4 was very good, which is it nice surprise because books tend to slow down in a series. The continuation of the last reaper as the main character in The supporting cast continues to build in the complexity of the characters in the relationships they share. The book's dialogue is very natural and the plot lines make sense and keep you wanting to know what happens at all times. Really enjoyed the series. This book was a great addition.
Where are we now, 2.6 out of 5 stars? It's amazing how much a story improves when the author focuses on proper dialogue between characters, actually spend more than a few sentences to flush out a character, and focus on storytelling instead whatever the first couple books of this series was. This book is not perfect, but I hated it less than the others. Now I'm actually interested to see what happens. Saying that, it will not take much for me to abandon this series, so let's see if things get better.
Cain and crew pickup a distress call from the ship that escaped from dread naught in the first book. They have run out of fuel anD are in the path of a comet! Cain works out where they were heading to and goes there to try and find fuel for them, but uncovers more than expected. Alien monsters and the Union are also problems.... Cain is also having weird dreams..... An entertaining action-packed read.
By far my favorite parts about these series is the self-talk with the reaper AI, the banter with everyone else is good but the backtalk of the 'limited' ai and Cain just makes me chuckle all the time and i love every moment of it. Their friendship is what makes me not stop reading this series and also how Cain is growing as a character and showing more of his 'softer' sides (If he can have any) , and we also get a bit about his past and why he became what he is.
This is an excellent continuation of this series with more character development and plot twists. I love the main character the interplay with is LAI, but felt it moved a bit too slowly until the end, where the action exploded and then left you wanting more for the next in The Last Reaper series.
Another action packed installment in the Reaper series. Cain picks up another crew member; a surprise from his backstory and makes friends with a new world all while eluding his newfound nemesis. I won’t say more but I will dig into the next book with vigor!
This book had plenty of action and we got to meet a new civilization on another planet far from home . The new planet has a big problem with their nuclear reactor and Cain makes them a deal that they can't refuse. Good book kept me turning pages late into the morning hours.
Audiobook let down after the great read of Ray Porter. This doesn't have the vocal range or dynamics. A classic example in the difference the reader makes to the story. I doubt ill bother with the rest of the series with this narrator.
Again the authors provide an exciting detailed script of the trials and tribulations of reaper Cain and his squad of uniquely gifted allies. They continue to fight the Union and gain support from new contacts. Can't wait for the next book.
Another short action packed story. The scenarios are getting more outlandish and the "foreshadowing" is too obvious. Again I wish these had been fleshed out more or combined into a more streamlined and coherent narrative. I'm still having fun though.
Fun read , excellent contuation of the story. Well written and devolved story. Great characters. However needed a little better proofread and editing. A few errors but doesn't take away from the story.
I enjoyed this addition to the Reaper series. I began reading this as a filler between other military science fiction series I have been following, but now it is one of my go to series. The Last Reaper has became one of my favorite Military Science Fiction space opera’s.
The Reaper and his little crew are at it again! They are fleeing from three Union warships commanded by Vice Admiral Nebs. Then they here a distress call from The Bold Freedom, the ship that escaped the maxi prison with innocents who shouldn’t have been there. But they need to collect fuel and find an unknown planet, Wallace, whose population is in big trouble. They have a big job ahead of them but none of this team is willing to concede defeat and there are new friends and new enemies in the Union Archangels. Looking forward to September!
