Detective Virgil Jones is about to discover that the genesis of a friendship from long ago wasn't just a beginning. It could be his end.
Pete Long has it made. As a star high-school basketball player, he's just received a full athletic scholarship from Purdue University, and is already being scouted by the pro's. But when Pete meets up with a group of street players, something terrible happens, and Pete's life is changed forever...
Virgil's wife, Sandy, the lieutenant governor of the State of Indiana is working with the governor and Senator Michael Wright to pass legislation that has the potential to change the voting system, not only in their state, but all across the country. But not everyone wants the vote to pass. In fact, there are people who will do anything to ensure that it doesn't...
Rick Said, owner of the sonic drilling units that made Virgil and Sandy wealthy has a problem. The sonic drill units operate in part via artificial intelligence, something Said's engineers know nothing about. And when the company Said contracted with for the AI technology decides to discontinue their relationship, Said asks Virgil to find out why...
But Virgil has something that takes priority over Said's request. Senator Wright's son, Garrett, has been murdered. Was the murder a message to the senator to back away from the bill, or something else entirely? As Virgil and the rest of the Major Crimes Unit begin to look into Wright's death, they not only discover a twisted web of lies and deceit, they find themselves caught in the crosshairs of a killer.

Review of State of Genesis

In book 7 of the Virgil Jones series, the past comes back to haunt him. A terrible accident that put Virgil s father in an impossible situation comes full cycle when Virgil is placed in a similar situation. The author understands Childhood Trauma and how it's impossible for it not to impact your life.

A fantastic story

This has been an incredible series, and this story is no exception. I absolutely love the "cop humor," the crazy antics that they all get up to, the unconditional love of this unconventional family, and the way they all work together to make everything better, as much as possible anyway.
I do have to say that the cryptic sayings, especially like the one's at the end of this book, are a little difficult to understand, especially when it's something that happened several books prior. However, it wouldn't be the same without them though.
I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.

Leaving one mystery open while solving another... Nice!

Let me start by saying I've read upwards of probably 5000 books in my life, so take that as you will. Anyway, I'm really enjoying this series. At first, the similarities to John Sandford's Virgil Flowers kind of put me off, but Scott has woven such a story here. Each book feeds into the next and the dialogue is excellent. The plots are intricate and the action is fast and believable. The characters are well developed and take on a life of their own. Questions are answered and then new questions arise...I'm hooked and loving it!

WOW ! Couldn't put this one down all the way to the end !!

Just like the other books in this series, Tension, True Friendship, Suspense and of course, a "puzzle" to keep you thinking ahead. I read this one straight to the end and I'm beginning to understand the importance of Virgil's relationship to the "spirit" of his deceased father !
I recommend this book ! I'm in search of the next one in the Series !!

Information to Explain the Beginning

I enjoyed this book as I have all in the series but although you get more of the background of Virgil and Mutton there are still questions with only hints of the truth. Interesting the intertwining oh memories and relationships and how they explain some facets and not the whole story. Can't wait to read the next in the series

Excellent read

Characters you come to know and love. Another excellent book in the series. I don't know how Scott keeps his high standard but I haven't read one book that was even mediocre.

Just Great

This has just got to be Thomas's best yet. Difficult to get a handle on the real criminal until close to the end. But the ending is without doubt the cap on a great story.

I enjoyed this mystery, but didn't care for the bit of paranormal: Virgil talking to his dead father.

Engaging

Intense and fast moving as ever for this author. Complex twists and turns and misdirection keep the reader from knowing what's right or wrong in several levels.

Galaxy of suspense

This book was very informative about chain connect thing. I've read a little about it in the last year or so and now I get it. If this could be a reality it could help in maybe bring this nation out of the tribal mentality and make us a land full of hope and greatness again. I hope that you write more about this internet stuff as I feel you could expand my understanding even more. I enjoyed every book in this series. Thank you Mr Scott.

Raves for Thomas Scott!

I just love Virgil & the crew! The stories just keep getting better with each one. If you have not read his "State of" series, I highly recommend you do so and you will not regret it one bit! Thomas Scott is an amazing writer and puts so much of his experiences into his novels that make it truly his own.

Virgil is a good man

Another good story about good people who are trying to do the right thing for society. It helps to understand all the comments if you have read the first 6 books in this series. Which I have. All good story s.
