The Van Gogh Sisters

Rate this book
Many people are familiar with the life and art of Vincent van Gogh, and his extensive correspondence with his brother Theo. But their sisters—Ana, Lies, and Wil van Gogh—have gone overlooked until now. In this compelling group biography based on extensive primary resources, art historian Willem-Jan Verlinden brings Vincent’s three sisters into the spotlight. At a time when the feminist movement was beginning to take root and idealists were clamoring for revolution, the Van Gogh sisters recorded their aspirations and dreams, their disappointments and grief. Based on little-known correspondence between the sisters, this fascinating account of these remarkable women captures a moment of profound social, economic, and artistic change.

With great clarity and empathy, The Van Gogh Sisters relates the sisters’ intimate discussions of art, poetry, books, personal ambitions, and employment. Their story will resonate with readers and broaden understandings of Vincent van Gogh’s childhood. Set against the backdrop of a turbulent period in nineteenth-century history this story sheds new light on these impressive women, deepening our understanding of this unique and often troubled family.

A slightly dry introduction to some overlooked women. Even with the intent to focus on the sisters, I guess it was unavoidable that a lot of space was spent on their famous brother, as he affected them all so much.

The Van Gogh sisters were somewhat interesting so this was a somewhat interesting book. All three were brought up to achieve some independence through work, rather than being "ladies." Anna, the eldest sister, seemed to lead the most "ordinary" life in harmony with the somewhat stultifying social climate of Dutch Reformed protestants, marrying at a reasonably young age, having several children, and living a long life. The youngest sister, Willemien never married, and tried the hardest to strike out in her own direction by becoming a teacher, but soon after she had considerable success leading the administration of a women's work expo, she was committed to a mental institution and remained there for the rest of her life in varying levels of insanity. The middle sister, Lies, did some teaching, went to work as a companion to an invalid lady, had a child with the lady's husband, and eventually married him and had a large family. She wrote and published a lot of poetry.

Mental illness is a theme that runs all through the lives of these women. Several members of their mother's family were mentally ill or committed suicide, so it began a generation or more before them. Not only did Vincent commit suicide, so did his youngest brother, and the middle brother, Theo, who was beloved of all the family, died of natural causes in the same year as Vincent leaving an infant son. The women were all much longer lived, but Lies's husband also ended up descending into mental illness in his late years. I wonder if this was a common thing in Dutch society in the late 1800s? or was it just chance that it all happened to these people?

Theo's widow and Lies ended up at odds over how the legacy of Vincent's life and work was represented once his reputation began to grow, and it's not easy to feel a particular sympathy for one versus the other because they both had such difficulties to overcome in their personal lives.

I guess a moderately interesting book is appropriate for these moderately interesting women. It's nice to see them recovered from the shadow of their brother.

A somewhat boring yet truly boring book was the result of years of study, and research. It is a pity for Mr Verlinden did his homework, and his subjects were, and still are interesting. They led compelling lives for their time, and even if their fascinating brother stoles the light quite often, they could have got a better biographer which sadly wasn't the case.

Molto, molto interessante.

(Minor spoilers ahead!) An engaging read but overall a disappointment, The Van Gogh Sisters is a male scholar's perspective on the lives of the three van Gogh sisters- Anna, Lies and Wil. Verlinden weaves an interesting version of the van Gogh family's lives with snippets from letters interspersed to bring personality and heart. Unfortunately, however, this book does not succeed in bringing focus to the lives of the van Gogh sisters, instead opting for more of an overall summary of the van Gogh family as a whole with an overwhelming focus still on the male members of the family. This seems inevitable in a book that has so much to do with family ties, but to me, it cheapened the story of the three women to still focus so much on Dorus, Vincent and Theo. Anna's story unfolded in the book as 'she was a young woman, then she got married and had babies and that's all you need to know about her'. VERY little focus is given to Anna. This could be because little historical evidence exists regarding her life (as is common with women from the past because of historical misogyny), but mention of that early on in the book would have helped to ease the disappointment of her lack of story later on. As for Lies and Wil, their stories unfold quite nicely in their entirety, but I found it infuriating that when the author came to the most interesting parts of their lives (as well as Theo's), he spent only 1-2 pages glossing over them. It happened repeatedly throughout the book- it would get to the part that I'd been waiting to hear about and the author had been alluding to for a while, and then after a quick summary he would return to much less interesting information. I was very disappointed. There were also times that the author would bring up a historical theory about the women's lives and then never develop it further or bring the focus back to it. For a book written so recently, I had hoped it would have gotten past a lot of the usual male scholarly nonsense that often surrounds women's history, but sadly it seems to follow the pattern of many women's history books written by men.

The first part of the book which tells of the painter's family life is interesting and establishes relationships between the siblings and the identities of the sisters to be fleshed out later. The sisters' lives were notable in the paths they take--Anna marries; Wil tries many types of employment, wants to be an artist at one point, and is plagued with depression; Lies has an affair with the husband of the family she works for, and has a child given up for adoption. She later marries the man when his wife dies. Many friendships among the daughters are explored that weren't of much interest to me, as I was focused on Vincent and Theo mainly. Will next read a bio of VVG.

"This is how the Van Gogh sisters will be remembered in the collective memory: Anna the pious, obedient one, with whom Vincent seemed to bond at a young age, but who ultimately caused him to go abroad and never return; Lies the eccentric poet and writer with a big secret, who presented herself as 'the sister of' the famous painter but never truly bonded with her brother or his art; and Wil, Vincent's favourite sister, to whom he dedicated many paintings - the little sister who, like him, was 'different', and with whom he shared a love of art and literature above everything else."

A heartfelt study of the women who lived in the shadow of their famous brother, The Van Gogh Sisters was a pleasurable and fascinating insight into the personal lives of Vincent Van Gogh's family.

Providing an insight to the social history of Dutch Reformed Protestantism and the middle class family of the Netherlands, Verlinden weaves together a fascinating story of three women often told in their own words through letters and diaries.

As someone who has been enraptured by the artwork and life of Vincent Van Gogh for many years, this book was compelling to learn more of the female relationships he engaged in during his short life. I found this an incredibly interesting read.

Vincent Van Gogh had three sisters: Anna, Lies, and Willemein. He was close with his oldest sister until a falling out, which caused him to leave the Netherlands and never return. He was not close with his 2nd sister. He was most close to Wils, who had come to Paris to visit her brothers and Edgar Degas' studio - and she shared an interest in creating art. However, he and his younger sister also shared mental health issues.

Interesting enough for those who want to know more about Van Gogh’s family. This book leans heavily on the letters written among the family members with only a little additional info about their lives in context with the times. Overall kind of dry, but I did appreciate the glimpses of each sister’s personality through her own words.

Interesting as a way of reading about middle class life in the Netherlands at the time of Van Gogh but, as the main drama is offstage, a bit lacklustre and written in an oddly starchy tone, as if infected by familial disapproval. The family never really 'got' Vincent's paintings (except.Theo) .

Very informative in studying the life of Vincent Van Gogh. I find it wildly unfathomable that he did not sell paintings during his lifetime. His own brother was an art dealer! Great read! Learn even more by reading this well written book.

There was some very interesting & fascinating information about the Van Gogh family in this book but it gets lost & I felt I was wading through the text, enjoying the rewards when I came across them. There are a pleasing amount of photos & pictures.

I did hope there would be more about Anna, Lies and Wil but there wasn't as much as I had hoped. Perhaps it was because alot of the sisters' letters were missing.

4 sterren.
