Devil Soul

Rate this book
It was a struggle for possession of a man's soul. It was witch against mortal, but it was also man against woman. Bonita was young, lovely and evil. Adams knew it would take all his strength to fight her, as a witch and as a woman. At stake was the very life of his friend Andy. Bonita, behind the serene mask of her beautiful face, was determined to summon all the demons in Hell if need be.

Amazing. Written in 1970, an authentic occult thriller, pretty much a contemporary take on Wheatley’s The Devil Rides Out, more explicit, set in LA, and with a gay couple at the centre of the story.

Author Victor J Banis, using a pen name, only wrote a couple of horror novels, but plenty of gothic romances, again under pen names.

Reading any thriller with gay characters that aren’t stereotypes, psychos, serial killers or comedy relief is so very rare for this era. I’m especially grateful to find such a positive portrayal of gay men, supported by other accepting characters, in a story in my favourite genre - supernatural horror.
