The fate of Mär Heaven lies in the hands of Ginta and his fellow members of Team Mär! They must defeat the Phantom and his ruthless Zodiac chess pieces in the deadly War Games. The fifth battle is set in a desert field, and the first round pits Princess Snow of Team Mär up against a powerful bishop class Zodiac--the perfect opportunity for Snow to try out her newest ÄRM!
I said that I would be reviewing every book that I finished but here is where I hit a snag. How do I review a manga series, especially one that I am two-thirds of the way through?
For some background, Ginta has always dreamed of the world of Marchen and then one day he is pulled into that world. There he learns about a great fighter who has saved the kingdom from the evil Chess Pieces. In this world, people use magical arms to fight and Ginta is trained in using them so that he can fight in the next great war games.
As I said, I am two-thirds of the way through this series and it's hard to review. It feels like each volume moves the story ahead just a little. This one consisted of nothing but battle between MAR and the Chess Pieces. It was fine and we did learn a little bit about Nanashi, the leader of the thieves' guild and fighter for MAR.
This is a pretty enjoyable series and I appreciate that it's finished and relatively short.
MAR is essentially what would fall in the YA genre of manga. Hmmm, maybe borderline middle-grade. Y’know it’s never actually clear what distinguishes any genre. I suppose it’s the tone, pace and dialogue which makes me say it is so (definitely here anyway).
It dawned on me that the way the ARMS work is very closely related to a fantasy idea that’s been swimming in my head for years now. It’s actually helped me to iron out the details if I ever wanted to reveal them in a novel or short story. Bar that, I’m always a fan of the designs and action. It’s always a joy to see optimism, child-like glee share the same pages as hopelessness and despair. The presence of both is always stronger and is strikingly more powerful in tones or stories that seem more geared towards kids/young adults.
Sympa.
