A deluxe boxed set of four hilarious yet heartwarming autobiographies from your favorite Golden Girls.
Celebrate The Golden Girls with this handsome set, including four hardcover books, each with 48 pages of content and featuring full-color photos, packaged in a slip-cased box.
Each book reads as an autobiography as told from your favorite Golden Girl, alongside fun sidebars (think Sophia's secret Sicilian family recipe) and funny quotes (Rose: "As they say in St. Olaf, Helgenbargenflergen").
The 4 hardcover books include:
Pray for Brains by Dorothy Zbornak As They Say in St. Olaf by Rose Nylund Picture It: Sicily by Sophia Petrillo The Curse of Being a Devastatingly Beautiful Woman by Blanche Devereaux
Very sweet. I used to watched the Golden Girls all the time with my mom when I was a little girl and it still one of my favorite shows. Each book is quite short, about 45 pages, filled with picture, quotes, and little asides, and a condensed life story of each character. The author, Christine Kopczewski did a wonderful job capturing the voices of Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia and I really enjoyed it. Cute little box set, a little pricey for what it is though considering how short each book is.
Initial: Pro's: The books are all colorful. The photos from the show are really cool. The quotes from the characters are really cool. The little extra's are nice too. The characters personalities come out in the books and I like that a lot. --- Con's: The placement of the photos could've been different, the photos are put in the middle of the chapters and disrupts the flow of the narrative. --- Notes: In Rose's book there were some misspelled words and incorrect words. --- Post: This was a really fun read! I enjoyed each book and enjoyed some nostalgia, too. I thought the author did a good job with capturing the personality of the girls. My only complaint would be the placement of the photos. The photos are a really nice addition, but they are put in at random spots, sometimes, interrupting the narrative which breaks the flow of the story, in my opinion. The books were short too and the chapters weren't too long.
If you must have every thing Golden Girls then buy this. That’s what I did. But don’t expect much. There is nothing new or creative here, the author literally just took stories from the show and put them in a book often verbatim. If you know the show really well you already know these stories. It would have been bette if she had elaborated on the stories or made her own in any way. Copying the show word for word is not what I was looking for.
What a great gift from my Secret Santa! She knew that GG is my favorite tv show and that I love to read; there couldn't have been a more perfect gift! I read this during my Covid quarantine right before Christmas Eve and I chuckled much and laughed out loud on occasion. Many of these stories are right from the dialogue of the show, but the author synthesizes them together into a little "autobiography" of each character in a way that is totally in each of their voices. My only complaint is that it was too short!
This isn't going to count as reading 4 books for my reading challenge!? Oh well.
I started reading these books after finding out Betty White, our beloved Rose, passed away. It is sad now to think they have all passed away, but at least old and new generations can continue to watch the show and laugh. This boxed set of four books covers each of the character's lives. At first, I thought this was the actors themselves. Instead, Christine pretends to write as Dorothy, Rose, Sophia, and Blanche and using information from the show, she covers their childhood, marriage, and time living together. Most of the information is stated as exactly in the show; Christine just put everything in biological order. Therefore, this is information you already know if you've watched the show.
There were also a few errors in the books such as the title on the boxed set for Rose's autobio is As They Say in St. Olaf when it's actually called Back in St. Olaf. It looks like they maybe rushed publishing this one before editing it enough. (In case you were wondering Dorothy's is Pray for Brains and Sophia's is Picture It: Sicily and Blanche's is The Curse of Being a Devastatingly Beautiful Woman.) I received this set as a gift, so I wasn't too disappointed but this is rather pricey at $22. I probably wouldn't pay that, so I recommend trying to find it cheaper second-hand instead. While this is entertaining for us die-hard Golden Girls fans, I was just expecting to get more out of it. I recommend reading their autobiographies or actual guidebooks for the show instead to get an inside look.
I bought this set because I love the Golden Girls and thought they would be a nice addition to my Golden Girls collection. However, I feel these books would've been better with just the pictures and more quotes.
Cute books that feel like they were written by each character about herself. This was a clever idea. Ironically, the only downside is if you’ve watched Golden Girls a million times (which, of course you have) then it feels a bit repetitive. Does it feel true to their characters? Absolutely.
I liked the pictures and quotes too. I also liked how each character had their own personal section in each book that made sense for them, for instance in Sophia’s book there are a couple of recipes and Dorothy’s has book recommendations.
Cute idea. Very true to the show’s stories. A cute gift idea for Golden Girls fans.
I have watched the Golden Girls probably 20+ times from start to finish, it is my ultimate comfort show! When I saw this book set, I had to buy it immediately! Unfortunately, much like the reviews, it really fell flat for me, as any fan of the show, they just took quotes from the book and weaved it into a book for each character, there was no originality or creativity. Much like other reviewers, the pictures were nice but most of the time disrupted the flow of the story. In addition, there were a number of typos and editorial mistakes. Plus Rose's story didn't even mention Miles!
Overall, I would save your money and skip this! 2/5
This is a box set of 4 small books, each one an "autobiography" by the Golden Girls Rose, Blanche, Dorothy, and Sophia. I received it as a gift because The Golden Girls (and reading in general) is something my sister associates with me. This set is perfect for that purpose and it will be cute as a display item on my bookshelf, although I hope she didn't spend a lot of money on it.
As far as the actual reading, meh. I'll just watch the show again if I want to hear their quotes and stories and enjoy it more.
OMG I love the golden girls and this little book set is amazing. I wish the books were longer!! I love the show, I LOVE the 'girls', I called them my 'grannies' growing up. This is an adorable boxed set for anyone GG lover. The box is sturdy, the books are printed on good paper and the photos are clear.
Would've gone 5 stars had the books been a bit longer.
I’ve loved the Golden Girls since I was little watching it with my Grandmother. This is a fun little set that is perfect to keep on your coffee table. They’re quick little reads with cute facts about the characters in each book. They’ll start up any conversation fast! I highly recommend it!
A fun read (and a nostalgic way to ring in a new year): four short volumes of quips and recollections, told in the guises of each character from the beloved TV series, as written by an obviously devoted fan and author.
A very cute quartet of books that explain almost everything on the show except for how Dorothy & Stan who had to get married and stayed married for 38 years have two kids who weren’t out of their 20’s when we met them. 😉
