Chasing Rhinos With The Swami

Rate this book
Shyamasundar das (Sam Speerstra) was one of A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada's earliest disciples, assisting him in shaping the Hare Krsna movement in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, in London, and then, as Swami's personal secretary, he traveled with Prabhupada in India, Russia, and all over the globe for seven years. "Chasing Rhinos With the Swami" is the intimate account of Prabhupada's amazing adventures and how the lives of so many young Westerners were magically transformed. Guaranteed to have your heart racing with excitement.

In October 1970, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami arrived in India with twenty of his Western disciples to re-ignite the dying flames of Krishna consciousness in the land of its ancient origin. Srila Prabhupada and his Dancing White Elephants were an immediate national sensation. In less than eighteen months, Prabhupada established ISKCON as a major spiritual force in India, laying the foundations for three huge temples and a dozen centers across the land. In June 1971, Shyamasundar das became Prabhupada’s personal secretary and for the next two years traveled with him around the globe—all over India, to cold-war Russia, to Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, and across Europe and America—the eye-witness to Prabhupada’s incredible achievements. Now, at last, here are Shyamasundar’s stories, with 180 photos, describing in well-researched and intimate detail this most exciting episode in Prabhupada’s amazing journey.

Fascinating how can this even be possible story of Shyamsundar's absolute devotion to serving his guru; the tales are all over the world as Shaymsundar takes on the role of secretary to Srla Prabhupada and aims to serve him and accompany him around the world. The exhaustion of nonstop go go go spread the devotion was impressive; I didn't always agree with all the conclusions, and didn't love the almost romantic descriptions of how beautiful Srla Prabhupada was (felt like a romance novel description and was too much at times), but the stories, the tales, the devotion, the excitement, wow.
