Where Sleeping Dogs Lie

Rate this book
Psychologist Dr. Alan Greene is no stranger to stepping across the line with his students, but when he sleeps with a patient of his, the results are deadly.

Alyson was the perfect test subject for a new treatment for PTSD that deliberately creates multiple personalities. Placed under hypnosis, her memories were stored in the minds of The Sleeping Dogs, nine alter egos designed to help her triumph over the memories of her past so she could finally lead a normal life.

The method was brilliant, but when things heat up between Alyson and Dr. Greene, new "unauthorized" personalities start taking over, and Alyson's mind goes into a tailspin of confusion and obsession that can only lead to one thing.

Murder.

Now, it’s up to forensic psychologist, Dr. Roni Price, to hunt Alyson down before she kills again, but with no leads and a witness who refuses to talk, it’s anyone’s guess as to how, or even if, Alyson will ever get caught.

A mind-blowing thriller, with twist after twist, Where Sleeping Dogs Lie is a journey into the psychotic wonderland of a killer whose innocence somehow remains intact.

Human trafficking rescue, Alyson Woods is the perfect subject for testing a new method for treating PTSD. Placed in a hypnotic world, her memories are stored in the minds of eight imaginary guard dogs, each of whom tell her story during therapy, so she can remember at an easier pace.

Trouble arises when she and one of her therapists, Dr. Alan Greene, fall in love, sending her mind into a tailspin of confusion, obsession, and eventually, murder.

Now, it’s up to forensic psychologist, Dr. Roni Price, and an FBI rookie to hunt Alyson down before she kills again, only to discover Alyson is a killer the FBI has been chasing all along.

What a great story premise! I admit I had trouble understanding in the very beginning .. I couldn't wrap my head around imaginary dogs guarding this woman's memories .. the things she could not handle without help. The author has captured perfectly the depths a mind will go to in order to survive.

The book opens with a suspenseful killing event, grabs you by the throat, and never lets go until the very last word on the very last page. The characters are finely drawn ... evocative ... producing powerful feelings and strong, clear images in the mind.

Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of WHERE SLEEPING DOGS LIE. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

“Where Sleeping Dogs Lie” was a novel that was a very unique experience for me. I read this while having the author, Luc Vors literally walking me through the chapters dropping easter eggs and insights to this very unique psychological thriller suspense unlike any other I have ever read. It does take some imagination, deep processing and digestion of thoughts, evaluation and problem solving while reading this amazing book. It was a cerebral experience for me to read such a book and found it highly entertaining to say the least.

The story begins right away with a crime committed by a young woman named Alyson who compartmentalizes her personalities through her imaginary friends, different breeds of dogs, “The Sleeping Dogs”. As a test subject for a new PTSD treatment, her multiple personalities slowly start to take over. FBI is now involved in the case and with Dr. Price, a forensic psychologist, the chase begins to catch her before she kills again.

I highly recommend this amazing book and I thank the author, Luc Vors for his amazing dedication to his readers and making the time to join us in an experience with him in the Buddy Read. Thank you so much!! If I can give this all the stars possible I would. Pick this book up now!

My novel, Where Sleeping Dogs Lie, promises to challenge the traditional suspense thriller writing style by taking the reading experience in a new direction.

This book is a puzzle in written form, the pieces of which assemble at the very end to reveal a whole other perspective, one that tells the story a completely different way when you go back to the beginning. So, if you’re one of those people who reads the ending first, DON'T! You’ll spoil what makes this book unique, and you will never get it back.

For a limited time, I am offering signed copies on my website, www.lucvors.com.
The first 8 chapters are free, so indulge. Just hit the Free Preview button, and you'll be taken directly to the scene of the crime where Alyson discovers she just killed her therapist's mentor.

****THE FOLLOWING IS FROM THE BOOK'S PRESS RELEASE****

Not all suspense thrillers are created equal. Where Sleeping Dogs Lie has brought new meaning to the term, “page-turner,” with a writing style that reveals a different story during the second read.

“I wanted to create something truly unique,” said author, Luc Vors, “and I wanted to hear those coveted words, ‘I can’t put it down!’ or, ‘I can’t wait to see what happens nesxt!’”

Right out of the gate, the story slams you into a scene where a psychopath, named Alyson, just killed one of her therapists after sleeping with another. By page four, her imaginary friends, “The Sleeping Dogs,” are introduced, and it’s obvious this story will get nothing but juicier.

“It’s got to start strong, move fast, and end strong,” said Vors. “I can’t count how many books I’ve tossed that failed to hold my attention or felt like a waste of time. So, when I decided to enter the art of writing, I did so with two things in mind. Keep them fascinated, and have a big pay-off in the end that makes them come back for more.”

To say the story moves is an understatement. Within a single chapter, Vors takes you on multiple journeys, seamlessly teleporting you from the current chase, to Alyson's therapy sessions, to the tragic story of her past, to the forbidden love that blooms between her and therapist, Doctor Greene. What really makes this story unique, however, is the part where you find yourself wondering around the inner world of Alyson's mind, an imaginary place called, “The Valley,” where the guardians of her memories, the “Sleeping Dogs,” are under attack by a pack of wolves trying to steel Alyson's consciousness. It is an ongoing war inside her head, as the opening poem describes, one that continuously plays out while she slips in and out of the shadows, and hunts down her victims. And that’s only halfway in.

Surprise after surprise, twist after twist, Where Sleeping Dogs Lie sparkles the imagination while pounding the heart with every page. And just when you think you have it all figured out, Vors delivers an ending where the reader has no choice but to return to the first chapter to see how it all fits together.

Rich, informative, and drop-dead original, Where Sleeping Dogs Lie is not your average suspense thriller. It is a work of art.

Let me start by saying that this book was very unique, but it was not for me. Although it is categorized as a psychological thriller, I felt that it had a bit of fantasy mixed in as well. It was very hard for me to visualize this world that Alyson created.
I did love the ending. I didn’t see the twist coming so that at least helped me push through the last 100 pages.
I wanted to love this book because the author sent it to me plus we are doing a buddy read, but it just didn’t mesh well with the style and genre I tend to read.

Where Sleeping Dogs Lie literally puts the psychological in psychological thriller. Seriously, the author is educated in psychology and his brilliance and passion for the subject shines brightly on every page. I kept finding myself distracted from reading and just thinking “damn this guy is so smart.” There is a lot going on in this book, to say the least, but the writing is so vivid that I couldn’t help but creating Alyson’s world in my head and watching closely as this crazy, shocking, and sad story unravelled.

There’s not much I can say about the story itself without giving something away. What I can say is that I literally had NO CLUE that is was going to turn out the way it did. I’m not going to lie, you have to pay close attention as you read or the complexity of this story will most likely overwhelm you. I found myself having to go back and read some parts for a second or third time to keep it all straight. I read so many mindless stories, which I happen to love too, and look to as an escape, but I can confidently say that I haven’t read a story that has stimulated my brain as much as this one. You have a brilliant mind Luc Vors and I even feel a little bit smarter now that I’ve read your book.

“Where Sleeping Dogs Lie” was an amazing, highly original, psychological thriller, with heavy emphasis on the psych! As a psychology major, I absolutely loved the interesting theories and concepts of different treatments/techniques. The book hits the ground and takes off running from the very first page! I will admit I had trouble understanding what was going on at first with the general concept but once I caught on I really enjoyed how it was described! So don’t worry, just stick through the confusion and it will be worth it. I had some issues with traits of the characters that I felt were unnecessary or irrelevant and distracted from the story (even slowing the pace a bit), but overall I highly enjoyed the main plot. “Where Sleeping Dogs Lie” truly captures how far the mind will go in order to survive and preserve our mental state. Thank you to the author for the review copy in exchange for an honest review!

Where Sleeping Dogs Lie is an absolutely insane read.

I'm not even sure where to begin. This is the most bizarre, original, and creative story I've ever experienced. If you're going to read this, find a quiet spot where you won't be disturbed. Expect your thoughts to be scrambled and tossed back at you like random puzzle pieces scattered on the floor. And just when you think you can't take it anymore, the last piece will fall on your head and knock you over.

I could tell you reasons why I shouldn't have loved this book. But, really, none of those things matter because it all works just as it's written.

We have past and present timelines, with no marked transitions, but there is a clear cue if you're paying attention. And you really have to pay attention. The present timeline is written in present tense and the past timeline is written in past tense, regardless of who's narrating. It's a technique that allowed me to keep the timeline of events straight.

This story is intended to confuse and confound, especially in the beginning. It swallows you in its murky depths because it has to be that way. Stick with it and you'll be rewarded with a trip like no other.

There was no way I could put down this book until I finished. The twists and turns in this thriller are complex and recognizing the horrors that Alyson survived. I was nervous about writing a review, because I didn't want to give anything away. I may have laid down with the dogs last night, but luckily I work up with a cat. I figured it out several times, and I was wrong. This is challenging page turner.

I have read Luc Vors as a poet, so I was impressed and, well, shocked at his expertise in handling this disturbing and complicated story. The depth with which Vors has examined and manipulated his characters' psychoses is superb. Carrying a reader through the darkest elements of humanity while keeping a gripping story completely intact is a rare gift. In less capable hands, the enjoyment of good characters and invested sympathy might come second in favor of shock value. But that's just not the case here. Vors' voice never leaves the reader feeling hopeless or estranged; rather, just as the suspense or darkness becomes unbearable, which it nearly does, Vors steps in with a moment of humor or classic Noir and we are kept riveted to his characters and their tale.
"Where Sleeping Dogs Lie" is built on series of traumatic events, gradually revealed, yet a genuinely human story is always at the forefront. The balancing of a "good read" with this level of darkness takes an absolutely deft and gifted hand. Vors has created something remarkable here, unpredictable, yet strangely comforting. Recommended for adults as a stand-alone winner.

“Where Sleeping Dogs Lie” is a psychological thriller not to be missed! Luc Vors writing ability is superb! His words unfolded before me as if I were watching a movie; awakening each of my senses as he takes the reader through a journey of a tormented soul.

Going inside the mind of a serial killer, Vors brought me to the edge of my seat, unable to wait to see what would happen next. My heart broke as I read Allison’s story and the Doctor who tried to save her. Her journey, her struggles, the reasons behind why she needed to kill, will leave you gasping out loud one minute, in tears the next. Vors was able to capture the essence of innocence and unconditional love, even in the midst of the unimaginable.

A writing style all his own, Luc Vors is an author to keep your eye on!

Just...wow! If ever there was a complete escape into the pages of an all-consuming book, this one is it! Twisty, dark, unique, and gripping, I highly recommend this 5-star read for anytime of the year, but especially these crisp, fall days surrounding Halloween! Available now at bookstores and online.

Grade A psychological thriller!

Like super psychological. I may have read this a little too fast to absorb all the facts (I had to figure out what was going on...) so when I re-read it (because this book is something you NEED to read over and over again) I may finally understand all the nuances of it.

I said that about Inception also. Hint: 9 years and multiple watches later and I'm still not 100% sure about it- it's one of my favorite movies.

Luc Vors, the author, is in the buddy read group I'm also in and the insight, easter eggs and background information he provided was fascinating!

I enjoyed how the story puzzle format of the story and how it slowly unraveled itself to a clear yet ambiguous ending.

The characters-be warned there are quite a few to deal with, are rich, complex and carefully crafted.

As a former psychology student (who switched majors) the whole plot was fascinating! I love learning about 'reading' people, human nature and the delicate twists and turns of the human mind.

Since you guys seem to like what my weird mind compares books to, it's like Inception, Criminal Minds, Mindhunter and Homeward Bound combined.

How's that for a combination?

Short review: A great and intricate psychological thriller!

Author luv Vors himself says in his review here on good reads that if you are someone who likes to read the end of books before starting them, when it comes to this book DONT DO IT!

And I absolutely 100% agree!

This psychological suspense thriller is unlike anything I’ve ever read before!
Like split and inception woven together in an intricate web of chapters.

This book is a puzzle. Got quite confusing at times. There was a good 150pages where I was just completely lost.

But man... once you read that ending... you wanna start the whole book over again!

Everything makes sense now! Well almost lol like I said I almost wanna start it over again now that I have the answers to all of my many many questions.

This book is fantastic. If you are a fan of this genre or even th movies mentioned above, give this book a read! And like really really pay attention! This isn’t your regular ordinary suspense book. The focus you will pour into this book is worth it! Trust me!!

Where do I begin and how can I possibly summarize what I read? For most of the book I was walking through a fog of confusion and retracing my steps. This twisty thriller needs your full attention but don’t worry, you will make it out of that fog.
Dr. Alan Greene has the perfect test subject for a new PTSD treatment in Alyson. Under hypnosis, Alyson’s memories are stored in the nine sleeping dogs, alter egos to help her deal with past trauma and eventually help her lead a normal life.
But when Alan crosses the professional line with Alyson, new personalities start to take over and Alyson spirals out of control.
With bodies quickly piling up, forensic psychologist Dr. Roni Price is running out of time to find Alyson, who has become a ticking time bomb.
Definitely ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me, for originality and writing alone. This book screwed with my head in the best way possible!

Luc Vors and I met, by chance, at an obscure restaurant in the heart of San Antonio, TX. I was there on business and had randomly selected the restaurant to eat dinner. He was there to speak to a local book club. I couldn’t help but overhear the conversation so I approached the group, apologized for the interruption, and introduced myself. As fate would have it, I happen to meet one of the most fascinating new writers. He offered me an unsolicited signed copy of his book, which speaks highly of the genuine nature of this man. Of course, I graciously accepted and immediately began reading it.

As a published author myself, I can attest to how difficult it is for a new author to “get it right” so quickly. But as soon as I finished reading the first chapter I knew Luc had done just that. So, I felt compelled to write this unsolicited review, primarily to let others know about this new writer and, also because I know that honest reviews are the life’s blood to successful career for promising writers like him.

Where Sleeping Dogs Lie is one of those books that has no patience for delay when it comes to a dramatic start, solidly backed by a vivid opening scene. The book begins with a poem, which immediately put my mind into a curious state of wonder and expectation. What follows is nothing short of brilliant in terms of character introduction and plot development. My right-brained imagination lit up with his descriptions of the setting as I could not only see but feel the environment he puts you in…”Cattails sway just below a giant, flat rock jutting over a cove in the lake.”

To say the book is unique is an understatement. So, if you’re looking for something different, this book has it. If you’re looking for something bizarre, this book is it. And if you think you can get ahead of this author in terms of predictability, you’ll be pleasantly disappointed. Of course, these are the elements of mature writing seldom seen in new authors. I’d say Vors is off to a great start.
The storyline paints a complex set of psychological perspectives that often blur the lines of what is real and what is imagined, yet I couldn’t help but be drawn in by the allure of the brilliant balance and relevance of it all. Only later did I discover the sheer diversity of this writer, from his love of poetry to his clinical expertise and life experience. It’s no wonder the next logical step was for him to write something so fascinating that you just have to experience for yourself.
Well done, Luc…well done indeed.

This is a disturbing book in a rather delicious way. There is a lot of disturbing material, although I did feel that the author didn't delve into the realm of gratuitous, rather, that only what was needed to build the narrative was included. Still, themes of abuse (and child abuse), mental illness, torture, and several murders make this one on the harrowing side to contemplate.

The narrative is, at its core, about solving a murder. However, the psychological elements included are complex. The fact that four major characters in the novel are psychiatrists/psychologists makes the inclusion of a fair amount of jargon understandable. I did feel that this did slow the pacing of the novel, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing. I did feel that some elements and characters (particularly in the law enforcement angles) didn't add much to the story, and I feel that the novel would have been improved without them.

The character development was generally on point, although I think removing (or dramatically reducing the focus) on some characters would have benefited this element. There were a lot of characters to keep straight, and, while many of them were carefully and vividly rendered, there were several (of varying importance to the main story) that I felt just didn't have their moments to shine: Dorothy, Roni, and Poole, in particular.

While I did figure out the twist pretty early on in the novel, I still enjoyed reading the book. I do think some streamlining would have made this a cleaner read. Still, it was a solid read and I am definitely interested in reading more from this author.

I received a copy of this novel through Voracious Readers Only.

Where Sleeping Dogs Lie is a whirlwind to read, a psychological thriller with more than its fair share of action and surprises.

Alyson is a shattered victim of human trafficking. She has an unlimited capacity for crazy and the experimental treatment she is undergoing unleashes that potential. By the time we are pushed into the deep end of her story, she’s accumulated a horny psychologist, a horny FBI team, and a stash of previously horny dead bodies. (In case you can’t tell, everyone in this book is horny for everyone else. It’s gratuitous). She has the skills to kill, to disappear, and to reappear where you least expect her (say…in your bathroom).

This book is an absorbing read. There’s a lot of slightly warped psychology slipped in without feeling didactic, a pleasant coffee break from the suspense. The vortex of characters and constructs is a little overpopulated, so only one or two characters are explored in depth. I almost dinged it a star because I guessed the major twist early on in a “I’m going to be annoyed if…” way. However, when that “if” became true, it was well enough rooted and there were enough unexpected accessory turns that I still enjoyed the ending.

Overall, my criticisms were nitpicky in comparison to my enjoyment of the book, so it gets 4.5 stars (rounded up). It’s well written and unique, my two favorite attributes in a book.

This is not your standard cop/psychologist chases psycho type of tale. True, the action does move right along, with many a hairpin turn and zigzag, but there's more than momentum and pace to this story. We spend at least as much time inside the characters' heads, listening in on their inner dialogues, as we do outside, in the physical realm. When I say "inner dialogue," I'm not talking about the kind of inner dialogue consisting of vapid navel-gazing or insipid introspection. I'm talking about the "Oh Shit! What have I gotten myself into now?" kind of inner dialogue. I'm talking about a person with multiple personalities having a heated argument with their different personalities kind of inner dialogue. I'm talking about people fretting about having their deepest secrets exposed kind of inner dialogue, and sheesh, does this bunch have their quota of inner secrets and then some! Take all the above and add in a metric ton of sexual tension, and you've got yourself a book. Writer Vors does have his chops down. Why the book isn't on the bestseller lists is beyond me. It's really that good. If you're the type who likes their psychothrillers dark and wet and messy, you could do worse than give this book a try.

Author Luc Vors hits hard with his debut novel, Where Sleeping Dogs Lie. Vors weaves a unique tale with suspense, mystery, violence, and psychotic abandon. Alyson creates a fantastic dichotomy of both protagonist and antagonist, keeping us guessing how her arc will play out. Dr. Alan Greene generates empathy as a man caught in the middle of a deadly game. The tension ratchets tighter as the FBI closes in and Dr. Greene is further pressed against the wall.
Vors skillfully delves into the effects and consequences of PTSD and blends real world psychology with a fantasy representation in Alyson’s mind deftly utilizing 8 dogs to represent each aspect of her damaged psyche.
And the reveals and twists! I could write an essay on these alone. But keeping this spoiler free, but this tale spirals out of control and plunges the reader into a complex and intense climax that begs to be seen on the big screen. I would love this book to be made into a film. The whole experience is very cinematic.

OMG and Wow! What a read! Luc Vors is an amazing writer and in his book Where Sleeping Dogs Lie, he has taken a thriller and turned it upside down.

Dr. Alan Greene is a psychologist and university professor - the type who carries on affairs with his students. But he crosses the line when he has an affair with one of his patients, Alyson. Alyson has lived a horrid traumatic life resulting in severe PTSD. She is being treated through an experimental treatment that involves alter egos in the shapes of eight or nine different dogs who store and protect her memories. They help release them under the careful work of Dr. Greene and his mentor Dr. Hal Kreige.

BUT - the book opens with a murder! Dr. Kreige's murder and it appears that Alyson killed him and injured Dr. Greene!

And so begins a read that is crazy and compelling. Dr. Roni Price, a forensic psychologist and the FBI come in to help investigate. This murder is similar to another in the area they are investigating, in addition to several missing persons reports in the area. Evidence is starting to point to Alyson as being responsible for the other murder and the disappearances! But, she disappeared after Dr. Kreige is murdered!

As a psych major, I was fascinated by the premise of the therapy - and how Luc brings us into Alyson's mind. We meet each dog, we live her memories and then we are brought back to help solve the mystery.

I was fascinated.

You have to stay with the story and keep going because there is twist after twist that just keeps you on the edge of your seat!

This is Luc Vors' debut novel and I can't wait to read more of his work!

**Received this book in exchange for an honest review**

Had the absolute pleasure to read this story in its pre-fame glory, and would 100% recommend it. I have a lot of favorite books, and for a long while, it was "The Swiss Family Robinson", Luc Vors quickly and easily changed that with his hundreds of pages of pure gold. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you might go to your first Sex Addicts Anon. Meeting. You'll be transported to a new style of novel that truly leaves you in a glorious wake of thrill, empathy, sexual hunger and danger.

This is at the top of my list and surpassed all books I've read to this day. So if you are looking for strong literary work that rivals them all. This is the book for you.

Where Sleeping Dogs Lie by Luc Vors

When I started this book, I was a little concerned I wasn’t smart enough to get what was happening. It took me about seventy pages to really understand what was going on, but then I was all in. This book requires attention and I definitely had to soak up everything Vors wrote.

Let me tell you. In the end, it’s worth it. This book is 100% the psychological thriller it claims to be.

Intelligent. Quick-paced. Unique. Terrifying.

Where Sleeping Dogs Lie offers up an incredible ride for those fans of intense thrillers of the psychological sub-genre. The characters are in-depth and well-thought out which is hard to come by in this genre. The twist left me gasping (and grasping my husband’s arm in fear) while giving me goosebumps from just the insanely good prose. The best part for me: the incredibly precise and lovely writing style. This novel earns every bit of 4 stars from me.

Thank you, Luc Vors for gifting me with a copy of your novel. It was a pleasure reading your work.

Psychologist Dr. Alan Green makes the critical mistake of having an affair with one of his patients, Alyson, who is a test subject for a new form of PTSD treatment. When the treatment takes an unexpected turn, a monster awakens within Alyson, and Alan is drawn into an FBI investigation to find her before she kills again.

Where Sleeping Dogs Lie is a psychological thriller full of twists and turns that will make your head spin. The suspense is nonstop. The writing is poignant and powerful. The characters are well thought out and engaging. This novel has received several awards, and now I can see why. Can’t wait to read more books by Luc Vors!

I am a romance junkie so this was very far out of my usual genre. It was a very complex and detailed read so I was a little confused in the beginning but as the story unfolded it takes you on a dark path with lots of twists and turns. If you love a good psychological thriller this book is definitely a good book to read. It keeps you on your toes and takes you on a journey on the inner mind.
