This book can be worth your time, if you really need it. The Emotional Intelligence Pocketbook helps guide and teach readers new ways to handle their emotions. Gill Hasson does a wonderful job teaching the reader how to understand and manage emotions. Each chapter of the book is a new level that targets a more difficult aspect of emotions, there are about four different chapters. Gill Hasson has definitely made this worth the read, by teaching you about emotions while giving you ways to practice these new tactics in real life situations.
Gill Hason is a very successful author, she has written twenty-two books. The book was published in the beginning of 2017. She has twenty years of experience teaching students how to manage their emotions, inspiring her to publish The Emotional Intelligence Pocketbook for everyone to read. This book gives you many mental activities to practice when the opportunity presents itself, making complete sense in why this book falls under the category of self-help.
The author does a great job guiding readers using different terms in the book to make the reader under. It is very similar to her other books, especially Mindfulness. Her main writing style is inspirational advice stated in her book Mindfulness, “Mindfulness keeps you grounded and centered - less pushed by what’s going on around you. You are more able to stay focused and be calmly present in the midst of both pleasant and unpleasant experiences” (12). In the emotional intelligence book the author has a guiding advice giving writing, “When it comes to emotional intelligence, acceptance means simply feeling whatever you feel without trying to resist or control those feelings” (80). All of the author's books are a self helping, guidance type of books, shown through her writing.
The writing style in the book is descriptive but the structure is repetitive, each page is identical to the next. The difference is the words. On the left hand side of each page, it teaches you something new. Meanwhile on the right side it gives you ways to practice what you have just learned from the left page. The book goes over the understanding and management of emotions as well as developing your emotional intelligence and developing social intelligence. Out of anything this book is good for learning about your own emotions and how to handle other people’s emotions as well.
In the first chapter, “Understanding Emotions” the author goes over the different kinds of emotions that exist, positive and negative emotions, non-verbal communication, as well as understanding your emotional triggers. Chapter two goes over the management of emotions, managing stress, disappointment, regret, anger, and more. The importance of this chapter is it teaches you that the negative emotions we feel, the ones we are told are “bad” and not to feel them, is actually okay. Hasson discusses emotions such as jealousy, envy, guilt, anger, and more. The way we cope or handle negative emotions is what is important and taught in the book.
I would definitely recommend this book to young adults, but all ages would find this book beneficial. The audience of this book would lean towards females rather than males. This is due to the fact women are seen as more emotional than men, therefore having more of an interest in the book. The author targeted her audience for those who need help understanding their own emotions as well as learning about social intelligence. I found this book to be very enjoyable and highly recommend it to those who want to learn more about their emotions and help the emotions of family and friends.
