"We all fight against the worst versions of ourselves. But sometimes the worst version of us . . . is stronger than we are." -- Kamala 'Ms. Marvel' Khan

Recovering nicely from the rather uneven Vol. 1: Destined, Vol. 2: Stormranger returns our young super-heroine to Earth and puts her through the usual (but no less entertaining) paces in two distinct storylines. The first is a breezy affair where a weekend road trip with gal pals is quickly derailed by the appearances of two fellow teen enemies, the benign Discord and the angry Lockdown, who are now in cahoots with the Steve Jobs-inspired villain who is called Monopoly. The latter, more serious section - which features cameo appearances by Iron Man and Doctor Strange, both in a charitable mode - has Ms. Marvel battling the old-school violent villain Mister Hyde on the streets of Jersey City while her new costume comes to life and starts attacking her. Aside from that Spider-Man influenced (or plagiarized, depending on your point of view) plot angle, Ms. Marvel is also briefly presented with an ethical dilemma that is worthy of a situation faced by our favorite wall-crawler. I am so glad this series seems to be bouncing back to the tone and style of the initial run.

Post an alien adventure, with a new costume, but also with her parents forgetting her alter-ego, and her dad suffering from a possible terminal painful condition.. what paths lay ahead for America's now 2nd most famous Kamala?

Ahmed is doing pretty good at the small stuff like friendships, the Muslim household, religion and Kamala's personality, but it still feels like he's strugling to get to to grips with the overriding themes and stamping his mark on the brand as both main stories in this volume are rip-offs of other Marvel formulas; but the threat to Kamala's dad, and her reactions to and around that threat, gave it a sense of urgency that kept me interested. 6 out of 12.

Ahmed and Jung bring the family drama as Kamala's dad takes a turn for the worse. I love how Kamala is torn between being with her family and going after Mr. Hyde to make sure he doesn't hurt anyone else. She really is the 21st century Spider-Man without the mopiness. I'll even overlook the straight up Venom ripoff with Kamala's costume. It would have made more sense if it actually was a symbiote. Ahmed really has the characterization and relationships down. I also like that he's bringing in some bigger villains like Mr. Hyde and Stormranger. Her lame rogues gallery up to this point was always one of my complaints of G. Willow Wilson's run.

Magnificent Ms. Marvel Vol. 2 Stormranger collects issues 7-12 of the Marvel Comics series written by Saladin Ahmed with art by Joey Vazquez and Ian Herring.

Ms. Marvel is back on Earth with her parents’ memories of Kamala being Ms. Marvel erased. Kamala’s father also reveals he is sick with a terminal disease. As if this wasn’t enough, Ms. Marvel’s new alien suit is actually Kree battle armor with AI technology and has decided that Kamala is not dealing with criminals correctly and decides take action into its own hands.

At least the new suit had a purpose, but unfortunately it’s just a retread of the Classic Spider-Man/symbiote storyline. Kamala is dealing with a lot in these issues and has to make some extremely important decisions. Not sure what was up Vazquez’s art in the first two issues and making everyone “sexy.” That definitely doesn’t match the vibes of the Ms. Marvel books and was kind of cringey.

Stormranger's plot is firmly focused on Kamala's home life as her father's illness takes a dramatic turn. This is Ms. Marvel at its best and really allows Saladin Ahmed's writing skills to shine. Family/life dynamics he does very well; villains not so much.

Each villain in Stormranger seems to be specifically tied in to a life lesson Kamala needs to learn. It's not even subtle - Kamala's voiceovers basically state the lesson she's learning from D-listers like Mr. Hyde and Monopoly. The latter was especially annoying: another rendition of the stupid "Amazon is evil!" plotline. We know! It turns workers into drones! Big tech is bad! Whatever!

Fortunately, Monopoly was just one issue and Mr. Hyde is a necessary cog in Kamala's journey to discovering Stormranger's true villain (and the name of the volume). Heroes fighting against their super-suits is probably a trope, but I didn't mind this rendition.

Saladin Ahmed continues his run on Ms Marvel with volume two! This arc wasn’t as much of a home run as the debut, but Ahmed does a nice job both moving Kamala forward while also drawing extensively from her previous stories.

Kamala is very much our generation’s Peter Parker, and echoes of that parallel come up often in Stormranger. Kamala’s day trip with her buddies Nakia and Zoe is derailed; Kamala is pulled between her responsibilities and talking to Bruno about their relationship; and when her new alien tech suit becomes sentient, Kamala must choose between saving its target or staying in the hospital to help her dad.

These emotional dilemmas are where the story really shines – but not because they’re echos of Peter, but because they show us who Kamala is. Ahmed and his artist team heighten the suspense, reveal Kamala’s emotions and reactions well, and she has to live with the very real consequences – positive and otherwise – from her choices. Those consequences create real investment on behalf of the reader, move the story forward, and continue to reveal Kamala’s character.

The story falters with the villains of the story, several of whom are from Ms Marvel’s earlier stories. While it’s great to see her building a rogues gallery, these “villains” – it’s almost too kind to call them that – were relatively shallow when G Willow Wilson introduced them, and we don’t get much more of that from Ahmed. I forgot about these characters and probably will again when they make a return.

Joey Vazquez’s pencils open the second volume of Ms Marvel, and while his style is highly polished and consistent, I didn’t like how he rendered Kamala’s face. Since the beginning she’s had a distinctive nose shape and brow line, and some artists choose more creative license with this; to me, it’s a necessary part of her look. Minkyu Jung, the regular artist for volume one, takes over midway through the book, and it’s honestly a welcome return. His pencils are gorgeous and feel very true to Kamala and Jersey City; Jung might actually be my favorite Ms Marvel artist behind Nico Leon.

spoilers this paragraph: We also see a long awaited step forward in Kamala and Bruno’s relationship, and all I can say is – finally! (But the cover of them kissing left a lot to be desired.) Though Bruno might have chosen the wrong time to declare his love for Kamala, it’s so sweet to see him support her as Ms Marvel and through her father’s illness too, and they make a great couple. Ahmed referenced a conversation between Kamala’s brother Aamir and Bruno way back in volume 4 (I discussed it in the review here). I’m thrilled Ahmed is going to continue this conversation – minorities being in relationships with those outside their minority groups is a complicated issue, and seeing how Kamala’s family reacts will be interesting to say the least.

Even though this wasn’t the strongest Ms Marvel story, there are important character developments and some emotional resolutions as well. Ahmed and Jung have a strong handle on character and pacing, and above all what makes a Kamala story unique and so enjoyable. Looking forward to volume 3.

Ms. Marvel battles old enemies and new friends (yep) in this second Magnificent volume as Saladin Ahmed picks up on lingering G. Willow Wilson plotlines to drive his own story forward.

The opening two issues are fun, giving Kamala a bit of a roadtrip only to have Discord and Lockdown ruin it. I feel sorry for both of these characters to different degrees, and I'm glad Ahmed chose to revisit them. Kamala doesn't have a lot of recurring foes of her own, so keeping them around is a good choice, and helps keep the consistency between this run and the previous.

The main draw is of course the Stormranger story, which is essentially Kamala's Venom story. Once I realised what Ahmed was doing with this arc I was even more on-board with it, and the way he manages to balance Kamala's superheroics and the effect it has on her civilian life is so quintessentially Spider-Man that it made me gasp at how perfectly he executed it.

Joey Vasquez handles the art on the two-parter, and Minkyu Jung returns for Stormranger proper, so the series is in very well-versed hands when it comes to Kamala, with Vasquez hot off that ill-fated Ms. Marvel Team-Up book and Jung of course the regular artist from last volume.

Ahmed hits it out of the park with this second volume; his Kamala really is living up to the Magnificent moniker so far.

At its best, this is passable but unremarkable modern Marvel with occasional glimmers of topicality (a villainous tech-bro buying a town and turning the residents into employees into zombies; a neat paralleling of monopoly capitalism with Kamala's father's cancer). Nothing to compare with the Willow Wilson run, or Ahmed's other Marvel stuff, but acceptable in a forgettable sort of way. At its worst...look, I get that in many ways the character is an updated reprise of Spider-Man, but does that have to be done so slavishly that her alien costume turns evil? During which story she risks her dad's life in the course of saving villains?

Plus, it reminded me that Marvel had been just that little bit early with deploying a villain called Lockdown. Who's only a minor technologically-augmented authoritarian, when really the name should have been reserved for a Dementor-esque embodiment of despair who slowly destroys everything but with whom the heroes still somehow find themselves allied.

Nah man, this wasn’t it. Where to start?? The sexualization of Kamala on the very first page? The repetitive storyline of Josh being involved in everything? The constant abandoning of her friends and family? I’m not impressed with these new issues of Ms. Marvel. It’s like reading a very badly drawn fanfic. At least her and Bruno finally had a moment?? That was the only redeeming part for me.

I'm not going to lie, I considered abandoning this collection a few pages into the first issue. The art wasn't the same so Kamala looked different, I didn't care for the story, I don't even really remember who Josh is... but I stuck it out, and I'm glad I did, because the following story was better. I still didn't care for the superhero parts of it - personally, I'd just be happy with a comic about Kamala's personal life: family, friends, school, romance. Maybe a small bit of crime-fighting, because I do like her being torn between two worlds. But all the Iron Man and Dr Strange crossovers, the Kree space suit thingy, the Inhuman genes... none of that means anything to me. It all just makes these stories convoluted and hard to follow.

This story had some very interesting elements, but it was too heavy-handed and preachy, and parts of the story were rushed and cluttered. I'm not ready to give up on this second series yet, since I've so deeply enjoyed previous Ms. Marvel books and care about the characters. Still, I miss the previous creative team, and I'm not sure how long I'll continue with this series. I'll have to wait and see how it develops.

Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel discovers that her family must face a difficult time as one of her parents has a deadly disease. Meanwhile she does not know what to do about her feelings for Bruno, but they seem to grow closer and closer. Her friends always have her back and want to take her on a road trip for a quick break, where they are attacked by zombies. So not quite the weekend get-away they imagined. Can Kamala handle all of this at once?

With appearances of Iron Man and Dr. Strange, this volume is filled with adventures and great story plots! Also the re-appearance of Josh aka Discord makes Kamala face some stories from the past. Meanwhile her new super suit seems to have a dark character of its own... Kamala is torn between having to choose saving lifes of strangers (or former friends) and beeing with her family in these difficult times. When Hyde attacks the hospital that her father is being operated in, she has no choice but to go after him and try to stop him from killing more people. The way that she struggles to decide what is the right thing to do in this situation, just shows how much she's grown and taken on responsibility. Kamala has really turned into a very magnificent hero!

This was another great volume filled with great art and writing! The creative team did a great number with this one again and I hope it continues like this! I read this volume as part of the Omnibus that collects Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 + The Magnificent Ms. Marvel Annual #1.

Vamos aguardar.

I think I liked this better than the previous volume, but these feel very one-off-ish right now, not like it's building to something bigger. I feel bad...like, I feel like the writer is *trying* hard to get it right but just missing it a lot of times for me. There were good spots, but overall if I wasn't already so in love with the Ms. Marvel series before it was Magnificent Ms. Marvel, this wouldn't likely bring me in. The art seems so much less consistent now, too--like, I don't really need Kamala to have boobs and a comic book figure. Also, her mom gains and loses weight ALL THE TIME (I don't think it's on purpose). I hate how different illustrators mix up body types for females all the time but almost always stay consistent for male characters. That being said, male characters def need more variety in their body types as well. They're either big and muscular or lean and muscular-barely ever short or just lanky, never muscular but a tiny bit overweight, etc. etc. I'd say that females are more objectified in comics, but at least we're getting more variety.

I'm not really feeling Saladin Ahmed's Ms. Marvel as the first volume was a planetary romance where they went to another world with Ms. Marvels parents only to brainwash them away from knowing her secret identity. Then this volume basically has her dealing with a blatant EXPY of the Venom Symbiote. The thing is that the comic would be much lower in score (2 stars maybe) if not for the fact the parts dealing with her father dying of an inhuman gene are really good. It fits very much with the kind of down-to-Earth writing that suits Ms. Marvel well.

I just hate her kissing Bruno.

Ugh.

I adore Ms. Marvel, particularly her relationship with her family--and that was very strong in this volume. Of course, this story hit hard since her father is sick and Kamala had to constantly choose between protecting others and being there for him. This was deftly done--engaging and full of conflict, but also never becoming angsty. Plus... Bruno and Kamala are dating (kind of?) now! Yay! They are so adorable!

Sorry but ... I am really not a fan of the drawing of the faces of Issues #7-8 (artist Joey Vazquez, I presume) and was relieved that issues #9-12 were drawn by Minkyu Jung again (who seems to call himself a penciler instead of an artist - interesting... ...I mean, aren't they all artists in their own field? The writer, the inker, the colourist, the letterer?)

I am still salty over the first volume in this run, and had a hard time stopping myself from screaming at the book that it was still just a Spider-man story. It was enjoyable in places and had the best visual gag I have seen in a long time. I laughed out loud when she revealed her "mask."

The underlying relationship stuff between Kamala and Bruno is meh. And is it just me or was Zoe fat in the first volume? And then they made her skinny again? Meh.

I did really love the Rubicon mind controlled workers.
