I draw kickass superheroes. I never thought I was one.

To me, the stories that unfolded on the pages of my webcomic have always been way more awesome than real life—right up until the day an evil bad Assassin’s Creed cosplay dude showed up and tried to erase my existence.

I fought back—and caught on fire. Like, legit fire that turned purple and not only scared off the creepy evil bad, but brought a hot, OMG hawt fire elemental to my door to whisk me off to some mysterious academy. Did I mention hot? Did I mention he brought hawt friends?

Did I mention a mysterious academy?

Turns out I’m an elemental with the power to control elements with my mind, and there’s an Academy of Elements that can teach me how to hone my craft. Crazy, right? Even crazier, a secret academy of elemental wizards known as the Council handpicked me to save our kind from some seriously dark sorcerers determined to destroy our world. No pressure.

At least I have my quad squad—four OMG hawt elementals—by my side. If I have to literally save the world from annihilation, why not do it in style by pairing with them—in every sense of the word?

Welcome to Clearwater Academy…it's time to draw your weapons.

DNF 41% Headache. Inducing.
MC is a moron. She shits me.
Theres so much petty stupid stuff that i feel like im reading a young teens diary rather than a supposedly 21yo womans experience in real world. Theres a lot of little errors and inconsistencies. The story is frustrating af. It needs a hard edit and the MC needs a personality transplant way more discussion is needed between characters and explainations but its a lot of dorky i like his arms the uniforms creepy sexy talk about beards lots of irrelevant stuff where your not really sure of the purpose or point of it... just ugh. The concept awesome and defs has potential with polishing. But needs to be seriously concisely planned out this reads more like a fanfic of another story or a dream rough draft of one rather than a final product. It needs more depth more maturity and the sense of time place is just bonkers like best thing i can say is nail the who what when why where make it natural dont create girls being bitchy for no reason dont have weird drama and insta relationships out of nowhere just idk lay the foundation get the core elements of the scene down know each characters motivations and what theyd naturally do in that situation then decide is this scene critical to the story or filler? Filler can be good but all good things need structure and support you cant have a birthday cake of pure icing even if it sounds fun in theory itd get old fast and itll make you sick and you wouldnt be able to finish it - you need the cake part too. Add substance first then decorate and make it sweet and fun.
Will check out the author in future but for now i have the same wait and see approach as i did when skye mackinnon was first starting out and her books were the same after developing more experience and honing her skill shes gotten really great and now i look forward to her work. Good luck to the author. This might be a fun read for someone 13yo ish who might not have a base standard yet and would enjoy a lighter dip in the rh fantasy world or likes fanfic sorta stuff.

Heroine??

In the first chapter the lead mentions she has trouble making relationships work and reading this I have no trouble seeing why. The real mystery would be why 4 guys would put up with her. If the lead is unlikable, and you have trouble picturing a any scenario where she would be likely to save any world, it makes the whole story had to get behind. Will not be reading more.

Spark of Fire didn't spark anything beyond annoyance at the immaturity of the whiney teen drama I was subjected to.

The beginning chapters are always read with openminded and eager anticipation of getting into a fresh book that slowly dims down after a point once it becomes clear enough that it's not going great. I didn't roll my eyes when Rob in like the first chapter says Katy is the da one for the quad squad or when we meet the female side characters who are all mean/bitchy or when Katy just drops her life to go be at some academy of a world she vaguely knows. But the boring scene with the council where she says yes to being the prophecy like her consent mattered? Anyway, this short pointless scene that doesn't delve into the content about this prophecy to take it seriously followed by an equally short lame test to know Katy's primary element just does it. That's the point.

Katy is an inconsistent character, her POV reads younger than the age she is supposed to be. The constant crappy decisions or dialogues for the story comes at the price of making her look stupid and immature. The guys aren't great either. The high school drama with Vanessa just made me cringe. They didn't have enough characterisation beyond the physical aspects or the elemental to be interesting. The insta relationship doesn't help anything, the abrupt forced disagreements felt so fake and unnatural in the reading flow. There is barely anything to base this relationship on, whatever fights or making up scenes fell flat.

The elemental aspect of this book was nice but executed in a crappy way. The academy is under utilised and the prophecy isn't taken seriously so the villain is meh and the action scenes read dry. The high school immaturity is the worst of it all.

Ok

This story started out interesting and held my attention. Katy thinks she is a normal person going to college. She doesn’t know how wrong she is. She first finds out that she is different when she has a confrontation with two different elementals. One wants to kill her, and one wants to extract her to Clearwater Academy. From the first time Rob layed eyes on Katy he has had a physical attraction to her. I thought this story started out well, but the further into the book I got, I felt like I was reading a soft porn with a good story line. Katy wasn’t even at the academy for a week when she declared that four guys were her boyfriends, and she had sex with Rob, one of her four guys. The descriptions of the sex seen were very different than a normal sex seen. The author had an interesting imagination. I also felt like there was a lot of high school girl drama. Katy had a room mate she didn’t like so she mostly called her the mean girl, and the mean girl’s minions, she called the barbie twins. I don’t think I am going to read the second book of this series.

I don’t even know where to start with this… I liked the general concept and it’s probably the only reason why I finished the book. I like the elementals idea and having a group of guys that each help you with your element… but that’s all I really liked about the book. My major gripe comes with the MC and how her love life started. Basically, it's a poorly done insta-love type thing. (coming from someone who thinks insta-love/ fated mates can be done right)

The MC is one of the most annoying and immature heroines I have ever had the misfortune of reading. The amount of dumb shit she got mad about is completely baffling.

Not to mention, she didn’t question the whole multiple boyfriend’s thing at all. Most people will freak out -at least a little bit- if they’re presented a way of life completely out of the norm for them. For example, most people are against polygamy because they were raised as relationships being a 1:1 thing. So, if a group of people were to all of a sudden like “hey, we all want to date you at the same time,” you’d probably freak the fuck out for a second. You may or may not get over it eventually but you would add least question the very new and very different idea of having more than one boyfriend.

I can get behind most RH’s because it’s normal in that world’s setting or it’s at least thought about and then concluded “who gives a fuck about what anyone else thinks.” That’s acceptable. None of that happened in this book.

It’s like she never got mad or questioned the major things that most reasonable people would question but would have an attitude about the small things. It made no sense.

Also, all that stuff that I mentioned in the beginning? Happened in like the first 30-40% of the book. I completely get why people didn’t finish it.

Entertaining

This was a pretty good story. I was intrigued by the plot. The guys are the standard group of guys. I did find the female lead character to be a complete brat. A lot of the time, someone tried to tell her something she didn’t like and she would push back on them for no reason at all, reacting in a hissy fit. It didn’t make sense or fit the storyline. She wavered between “I am the prophecy”, and “I don’t want to be the prophecy!” Her verbal and elemental fights with the mean Barbie girls felt natural as there’s always a mean girl group that bully’s the female lead character. For half the book I didn’t even know the female lead characters name was Montana. It was rarely used. I was sad that her webcomic didn’t have more of a starring role, her intuition and her drawing I thought would have played a larger part. There was several spots in the book that scenes jumped, missing vital pieces that make the story unfolding more natural. I had to re read several chapters to see if I missed something. I thought it was super slow in some spots and then sped up in others. There was a lot of talk, a few fights with Onyx/Alec.
Otherwise I did enjoy the plot, the story. I think this book would have benefited if we got to read the guys point of view. I think this was in a 3rd persons point of view but also described Montanas feelings like it was her point of view. I’m unsure what it’s called, I think 3rd person point of view? The mystery surrounding her mother’s disappearance, her being a Quint, which I called from the beginning, why light is restricted, how when she called it she drained the guys powers. It was confusing, didn’t explain much but it pushed the story forward. Montana struggles through her classes, being bullied but also keeping her head high. If I could have I would have rated it a strong 3.5 stars, just because several spots jumped ahead with no explanation. How Montana pushed to know somethings that didn’t seem super important but other times she let things go without asking questions. I will read the next books, I just hope Montana stops being a brat.

So I stopped reading this book on page 203. It was this very moment that I could no longer handle the complete hypocrisy and utter stupidity of this heroine. From the beginning she said one thing and then did the complete opposite. "Id love to be an elemental" then as soon as she finds out she is she wants to hide and refuses to connect to water. At multiple times during her first two weeks at this school she thought she knew better than the already trained people around her and continued to fuck shit up. Honestly her brattiness was off the charts and if I were any one of those dudes she's "dating" I would have smacked the crap out of her multiple times. (lets face it she's not really dating them she's fucking them one at a time then moving on to the next without strengthening that connection for more than a few mins after.)

The part that really just made me throw in the towel was when she gets pissed at the guys for "forcing" the bonds to connect stronger thus making them temporarily weaker, while she earlier in the book cast a spell to strengthen her water bond and not only weakened that bond permanently but also the others she had already been creating. Though I suspect the magical sex she just had with her water dude will have fixed everything because his dick is just oh so magical. (Side note I super hate when all it takes for the heroine to figure shit out with her powers is to be dicked down by her magical peins. Like she didn't earn a single speck of that control unless you count her being on her back earning)

Anyway I was really let down by this book and super glad I didn't have to pay for it. I received book 3 and 4 for free at some point and saw that the rest were on KU so I thought I'd give it a try... Worst Mistake Ever. But what do I know, there was another 130 pages left in the book maybe the author manages to make the heroine less annoying in the future... I highly doubt it but who knows.

Spark of fire

Spoilers in review:
This series is pnr, fade to black reverse harem set at an academy for elemental magic users. The school is for adults and the main characters are over 21. However, the dialogue reads like middle school and the storyline isn't believable even for fantasy. Our heroine has been raised in the human world by her dad since her mother disappeared years before. One day while visiting a science museum in Montana, she is attacked by a stranger using bizarre powers. Of course she seems to have and use powers as well. Her watchers haven't told her anything about her secret heritage and are pretty useless at defending her. Four handsome men and a bitchy woman take her on a private jet to an island off the Pacific Northwest while hinting at her various powers. She's assigned a mean girl roommate, and the next day she's dragged before a mysterious Council that declares her the "prophecy" and she just agrees. She's supposed to save the magic world next month? Huh? Then she's put through a test of her elements despite having been hit with light the day before and isn't supposed to have access to them for days. Huh? Mean girl action occurs. She has sex with three of the men. She manages to partially learn all her powers in several weeks, makes friend with the actual Academy (the haunted building), and battles the way over the top evil guy and wins (sort of). That's just book 1. This might be entertaining for a young adult, but I can imagine they would roll their eyes too.

DNF .. spoilers!!

So I liked the beginning, and the characters were fine but it was the plot that was the problem.
She literally fought the Big Bad in like the third chapter!! And her watcher and mate were beyond useless.
It would have been better if the author left it at Onyx threatening her and her slipping away. The cadaver lab was so dumb. The bodies flying was cringe. And her suddenly having amazing control over her and his powers was.. far fetched.
And then the bad guy just gives up after almost winning? Lame.
But the most cringe, lamest, ick was when Rob uttered the line “I’ll see you later with two others who are badass as me”
DIRECTLY AFTER he just got his ass handed to him and almost let her die like 5 times and was completely useless the entire fight. ..like bruh. He couldn’t even defeat Mr. Creeper. In fact, considering they were on a first name basis, he’s had the opportunity to fight him more than once and hadn’t defeated him. LAME.

Just a no.

Ugh, I think I’m over the whining catty young adult academy types. I didn’t like any of the characters in this book, and even if I had, there motives were dodgy and they kept a more mysterious vibe around their so-called girlfriend, Katy.

The school environment was interesting, but not explored very well, although Cressida was an interesting character that I would liked to have seen more of. The bitchy mean girls were just blah, and as for the student helping the antagonist... it came out of left field as there were no clues dropped and the only viable candidate was too obvious.

So, not for me. Just very predictable and with no new twist to wither the plot or character development there nothing that jumped out to make this engaging.

DNF 32%. The MC was ridiculous and irrational. One day after meeting some guys (they had approximately 2 shallow conversations), the MC was saying things like, "He pat my shoulder as he passed, his version of kissing my cheek since we were in public" (paraphrased). Why did she assume that every single one of these guys would want to kiss her cheek if they could? And then a little later, one of the guys didn't kiss her cheek in the cafeteria, and she starts pouting. The pouting turned into a tantrum (and my breaking point) when she learns that this guy has a girlfriend because apparently that's a massive betrayal of this girl HE JUST MET.

Side note, I was starting to wonder whether the MC had a crush on the mean girl because the MC mentioned ow beautiful the other girl was seriously every time she appeared in scene. I don't think the book was meant to head in that direction though.

It just was not good.
The story unfolds over two weeks, during which Katy becomes the biggest, baddest elemental ever. There's also sex with all her guys, with some serious insta-love. Everything hinges around a prophecy that's pretty thin, and some villains who just kind of show up whenever the plot needs them to instigate something.

The repetition of this guy = this, that guy=that, was really annoying, especially as we had to cycle through all four every time Katy reflected at all.

All in all, this was not well-written, didn't have characters I connected with, and had a messy, noncompelling plot. I'll pass on the series.

The book has a great premise but it is missing heart. I really liked the story line and would be raving about this book if more time was spent there and less time spent drooling over the guys. The author spends a lot of time telling us the guys are hot and sexy but there isn't any description of what makes the MC feel that way about them. The MC goes against her normal desires MANY times because it is this guy. I will try the next book in the hopes that Adams can delve into the story line and spend less time on her characters hormones.

OMG I just loved this book! Katy Reed is just a girl who is anything but ordinary, and living a normal life. Well, her world gets flipped upside down when she starts showing signs of power, and finds herself the target of many bad guys. Luckily, she has a hot squad of body guards that are ELEMENTALS!!!! Katy must now find out which elements she can control, and if she in fact is the key to the prophecy to saving the Elemental World. This is definitely a great read filled with Magic, thrills, hot guys, and action!

Yawn

All these people are 20-something year olds written like they're 16 and can't behave like adults to literally save their lives. The supporting characters consist of four guys who are basically all the same, one mean girl with no personality and one stereotypical antagonist boi TM.
The whole story revolves around a prophecy that needs the silliest turn of phrase to make sense, and honestly the relationship of the FMC to each of the MMC is superficial at vest- which is great, because they're all so shallow none of the relationships would hold up if you flicked it.

A young woman, Katy, is thrust unwittingly into a life where enemies lurk at unguarded moments. Despite this danger comes new friends and a world Kat can embrace. Suspense, love, betrayal, battles lost, battles won and an awakening – this story has it all and kept me captivated from the start.

This is the first book of “The Academy of Elements” series. I am a fan and plan to read all subsequent books as they come out.

Spark of Fire (The Academy of Elements Book 1) by Kat Adams is an amazing story that I have read and have the privilege to read. This is book number one out of four in this amazing start to a new series written by a brand new author for me to read and I can not wait to read the next book in this amazing series. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about the paranormal.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book

Had to stop when she shared a kiss with the guy that just revealed he had a girlfriend. She was not likable Before that, but that was my last straw. And I wouldn’t respect the guy after that either. Not to mention the insta relationships that began so abruptly. The guys just kiss her with zero lead up. And something about Katy’s eagerness was off putting. And I’m never a fan of books where every female besides the MC is a total bitch with no redeeming qualities. Oh well, I tried.

DNF at 55%. I didn’t like that the author put cheating in this book. It wasn’t necessary; it could’ve been written out. I also didn’t like the main character. I thought she was really annoying. She needs to listen and basically communicate with the other guys. Furthermore the other guys were really annoying and I didn’t understand the world. I’m not gonna waste my time on a book when I know it’s going to be like two stars.

Spark of Fire

Wow! It was a pleasure getting to know Katy and her guys. There were definitely funny parts to this story but the ending was so intense that your heart will be in your throat. The one person who we thought was the traitor was not. Didn't see the traitor until it was almost too late. It's a pleasure knowing that the good guys still thrive. FANTASTIC job Kat! I would recommend this book!

A good start for the series, would like to see where this goes.

An erotic turn to a magical world where our heroine must quickly learn to use her powers or suffer tragedy. From the start adult situations make it clear this series takes relationships to fruition. Relatable characters, a fast pace an a peek at a magical university will keep you turning pages to see where the story goes.

Story had much potential, but the FMC was a little too much of a whining hormonal dumbass. Her emotions went all over the place, which didn't endear her to me. On top of that she doesn't mo any of the basics yet masters her elements and defeats this all powerful bad guy... that just doesn't make sense. Overall the characters and story lacked growth/learning and depth.

DNF @50%.
The plot would have been nice, but the whole book fell flat to me. The “relationship” was a joke, no development, just 4 guys who after meeting our FMC kissed her cheek and now she’s spouting she has 4 boyfriends. Just like that.
I kept reading, hoping the plot would keep me sane, but there was just too much stupidity.

It’s not bad, but it felt very “one and done”. I honestly thought it was a stand-alone because the entire storyline is wrapped up in one book. This could have easily spread into about 4 books with each book focusing on her learning each element, but instead it was rushed and over before it even began.

I love the plotline and the building up the drama. However, i don't like Katy. She is strong and likeable but at other times she hateable. Not once did she ask about her mother's supposed able death or snap with the pressure. The male leads were okay as well, i like them but i felt something was missing from them.

Will read the second book.

Okay

I liked the premise. I liked the characters. But the switch from acquaintance/job to “I love you” was to abrupt and disconnected. That made the rest of the book just plain uncomfortable. And then at the end, the author says “I hope you enjoyed Katy’s story” but she didn’t finish it! So it was just okay for me.

As a big fan or paranormal romance books this one has an interesting direction. Spark of Fire felt as if I was getting the base understanding of the characters and I am looking forward to watching the characters relationships evolve.
Really looking forward to the next book.
