Collecting the entirety of Paul Cornell's second run of Wolverine, these twelve issues (plus an annual) continue to deal with the fallout of Wolverine losing his healing factor as the march towards the Death of Wolverine mini-series starts.

If you're looking for a direct prelude to that though? That's not this. Instead, we get twelve issues of Wolverine on a semi-journey of self discovery after his sound thrashing by Sabretooth at the end of the previous volume, which involves going undercover with a band of mutant mercenaries for the most part, and arguing with this former X-Men team mates for the rest of it.

It's not particularly bad; there's definitely less of the odd dialogue that coloured the last run, and while Wolverine's thought processes aren't always as in line with what I'd expect, I can appreciate everything on reflection - the final revelations near the end of the book do put some of his more out-there choices into perspective.

The actual plot surrounding Sabretooth and the Hand though? That's just plain bonkers. There had to be a better way to get Wolverine back into conflict with them than having them want to steal a reality shifting weapon? It's so very...not Wolverine.

Also included are the annual, which is a feature length adventure for Wolverine and Jubilee that I really enjoyed (although this is by Elliot Kalan rather than Cornell), and a 75th anniversary story by Len Wein which sticks out as filler since it's set entirely in the past and has no bearing on Wolverine's current status quo at all. I expect it was included in the individual volumes when this run was collected previously, and was just thrown in here because it was in there too as a place filler.

The art's a nice solid collection though. We start with Ryan Stegman for three issues on a rare non-Spider-Man related kick (although he does get to draw the Superior Spider-Man for an issue), followed by Gerardo Sandoval's manga-esque stylings for three issues, Kris Anka (although the colouring makes it hard to pin it down as Anka) for two, and then Pete Woods for the final three. Jonathan Marks draws the annual in a very rough, painterly style that I think wouldn't work if the story wasn't set entirely in the woods.

As a Wolverine story, this is okay. It's a nice mirror piece of Cornell's previous run, and a slight improvement for sure. But as a prelude to the death of Wolverine? It never really gets into how Wolvie feels until it's a little too late, and some of the plotlines are so out there that it does take you out of the Wolverine of it all for a bit.

Not bad, but not entirely what it says on the tin either.

A character as steeped in lore as Logan deserves so much better. Even though this is a new volume, this is a continuation of Cornell's bad Wolverine story beforehand. Here, Logan makes his end run towards the worst iteration of Sabretooth I've ever see. So many times Logan acts like he's never been on a team before and its insane. Add to that the incredibly bad supporting cast Cornell created for a "superhero" bar that no one cares about. Its tedious and lame. There is some stellar art though, particularly from Ryan Stegman. The book's not terrible but it could have been so much better. The idea of Logan without a healing factor could have been explored fully. Instead, its a sprint to nowhere. Overall, its a below average book for an excellent character.

Paul Cornell's Wolverine is... okay. It's nowhere near his Captain Britain or Knight and Squire. The story was okay, but Wolverine's characterization was a little off at times. I understand he was dealing with trauma, but some things felt forced. I do like his friends at the bar, and I like the more mature Wolverine of this era. I think what I ultimately think about this run will depend on what l think about the death and return arcs coming up next.
