Angel, Angel, Angel...

Congratulations! You did it!
You found my HARD limit!

I absolutely loved the sick and twisted Tail of the Dog, but this one...this one nearly broke me. I'm speechless! That was just...just...FUCK!!!!

Since I literally just finished, I need some recovery time to process all that took place.

No rating as of yet. This girl is spent, raw, and partially catatonic right now.

Warning: Strong stomach and a ton of booze is needed.
The horrors! The gore! Aaahhhh!

Now excuse me while I go and find the fluffiest book ever to snuggle up to....

This is truly the death of innocence and the birth of a monster. A five star gorish read, stemming from the sins of the father and the transference of the daughter. How many times can a person cry wolf and no one believes or protects them. You'd think those who loves you most would. The word family should mean more then putting food on the table and a bed to keep you warm at night. But not for little girl lost Hillary. Only the voices whispering in her ear tells her what she needs to know. How to remain safe, or hide the ugly secrets.
 photo Hillary 03.jpg
She calls them the voice of reason, granting her sanctuary in a hellish nightmare. Her grim story unfolds at the tender age of thirteen, what should have been perceived as the best years of her life. Filled with cheer leading, hanging out with friends and doing what normal girls her age does instead of trying to fight off a monster. This is not a tale of happy endings or for the feint of heart with triggers. It's intensively dark, disturbing with graphic scenes. Angel Gelique takes you out of your cushy comfort zone, pressing boundaries in this amazing follow up sequel. Happy reading!

First off, it is very wise to follow the warnings for this book as if you get even slightly squeamish with just thinking about torture and gore, then you do not need to be reading this book. This book will take you down into the depths of despair and could possibly psychologically mess you up as the story drives deep into the human soul while ripping out your heart with the gory infested contents within its pages.

With all that being said, the second book in the Hillary series is really the background story for what made Hillary become the stark, raving, lunatic she became in the first book.

I thought the first book was a step into gory infested terror, but the first book was mild compared to this one. It starts out with a seemingly happy round about family, but underneath the facade there is a storm brewing. Hillary's father is the reason for her becoming insane as he molests
Hillary without anyone else being aware of it in the family.

This molestation goes on for a very long time and even though Hillary cries out to her mother for help, she finds no help as no one believes her. She does not go to any authorities as her father has threatened her, so she suffers and suffers until she starts hearing voices in her head that it has to stop. When the voices start talking to her, that is when it all hits the fan and she goes on a revenge spree into a gore infested unknown spiral of craziness!

Everything you thought you could handle in a gore infested book will give you a test of just how much depravity you think you could endure. Even for a true blue horror fan this is a raw, gritty, twisted, sick ride of mental horror into the lowest depths of hell that you could ever imagine and if you are not a horror fan, then I would tread carefully as you will be wading through so much blood and gore, you will need a barf bag attached to your neck as you make your way through the chapters.

So read the reviews and the warnings before you embark on this crazy, twisted ride of lunacy as if you don't then you will be slapped in the face with a gory body part. For the true blue horror fans out there, buckle up as you are in for the most twisted, gory, perverted, immoral depths of a hellish ride you have ever encountered.

Probably wasn't a good thing reading it before bed, but I can truthfully say that I didn't have nightmares, so I guess that could mean that being a true blue horror fan it didn't affect me. Five stars for keeping me reading till the early hours of the morning.

(To Angel: Thanks for the ride as I felt like I was on a roller coaster of twisted fear to hell and back!)

I had to stop at 67%

I found myself skipping parts that were too brutal and made me start to weep - in fact by the time I got to about 40% - I was skipping more than I was reading - so with a heavy heart - I can not finish this book.

disgusted photo: disgusted.gif

Don't get me wrong - the writing and the story is fantastic. The author is a genius when it comes to writing a real life horror story.

Now if you know me on GR - you know I read just about ANYTHING and very rarely do you see me rating a book low or not finishing. I can read everything from my famous book COWS to PNR to HR - shit just about anything.

scared photo: scared scared.gif

I don't know why this book cut me so deep? I did though find myself psychoanalyzing Hillary (yeah my college degree comes in handy for something)

She is the product of inherited genes and traumatic events which exasperated her symptoms of psychosis - this book explains a lot of why Hillary is the way she is.

Did I feel bad when she killed her dad? FUCK NO

Did I feel bad when she hurt the dog? OMG...I sobbed

upset photo: Upset extremeupset.gif

Did I feel bad when she hurt others? Yeah but not as much as the damn dog. Shit...I'm one of those people who can't watch those damn ASPCA commercials on TV without crying.

I felt for Hillary - I wished someone would have heard her.

unbelievable photo: ohmygodno.gif

Would she be the way she was if someone listened? Probably not unless there was another event later in life that switched her gears. She mainly could have ended up just like her father with the dominant characteristic....

Shit...sorry - here I am doing it again.

Ms. Gelique - please do not take offense of me not being able to finish this book - it is not your writing or your story....it just hit a bit too close to home.

I will continue the story - and proceed to #3 - Per my besties, Jenna, Jahy and Carla....they promise me I will be able to make it through.

I did not like "Hillary Flesh and Blood".
I usually enjoy books with deranged characters, who do awful things to others people just for fun, when there’s an interesting plot. But it wasn’t that with this book.
I read a lots of disturbing, extremely brutal and vile stories that I loved, but this one was too much for me, and not enough at the same time.
The torture scenes were too long, too filthy and the plot is almost non-existent. In fact, this book is just about torture. It’s a torture scene after another. I understood that the main character wanted everyone to pay for what she has endured, but Hillary level of cruelty and madness is disproportionate to what she has suffered, and is totally over the top. In my opinion, it is ridiculous.
I didn’t like this second story. However, i’ll read the third and final one, I want to know how it’ll end. Maybe the third story will be coherent.
If you’re looking for a story with innocent children who are tortured and are killed in horrible and unimaginable way just because the author wanted to write something shocking without sense, I recommend this book to you.
It’s rare when I feel dirty after I finished a book, and it’s more rare when I’m pissed.

For me, a solid plot and character development are crucial, especially when reading splatterpunk/extreme horror. I thought this book failed on both counts.

It started off strong and I was really enjoying it. I love getting into the mind of a psychopath and finding out why they do the awful things they do. I needed to know Hillary’s back story and I got it. But then the story became over the top and ridiculous. All the characters were dumb AF, especially Hillary’s mother. By the end I lost my eyeballs due to all my eye rolling. I still can’t find them.

This book is like nothing I've read before, not in terms of the horror but the intense feelings I experienced while reading. I was so engrossed and the writing was amazing, the book took hold of me and I didn't want to stop reading; Yet I had to take breaks, just to get my breath back.

We start the book with a glimpse into the childhood of Hillary's dad and how he met her mother, it's not pretty; The events that follow are anything but pretty, just horrific. I kept reading thinking it cannot get any worse, I was wrong, it does.

I have to give kudos to the author, for surprising me throughout the book,I didn't know what to expect and boy was I screaming a few times, NO!! and thinking this is just wrong.

I hated Hillary's mother, someone in my opinion who is as big of a monster as her dad.

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." (Edmund Burke)

I will read book 3, I'm eager to see how this will be wrapped up, but first I'm taking a break and reading a romance; Hillary ruined me.

This has to be one of my favourite extreme horror novels I've read so far due to the fact that it made me say "Oh shit" more than a few times (I don't usually do that). It was sick, sad, and disturbing. There's absolutely no boundaries in this horrifying tale and anything and anyone goes. Hillary Greyson is such a repulsive character. Her actions are of a person without an inkling of morals or compassion.

Angel Gelique makes many other extreme horror authors' work seem tame in comparison, in my opinion.

My only question is: Where is Angel Gelique? I hope she makes a comeback because her fans yearn for more of her twisted imagination.

This series so far has been disturbing on so many levels. The premise was such, so I decided to go ahead anyway. The fact that this sort of thing really exists, I know because I've seen the news and read the papers, encouraged me to go into it with an open mind. For those who would deny these happenings exist, well kudos to you. Ignorance is bliss. Which brings me to Hillary...
What this poor girl endured is horrific. No child should ever experience such atrocities. We see her go through the motions and are there with her when she reaches her breaking point. Her coping mechanism and justification for the rampage she embarks on is nothing more than psychotic.
Did the author go above and beyond in describing these acts? Absolutely! Is it not a writers objective to push boundaries, to take you to a place you normally would not venture to, good or bad? I say it is. As graphic and hideous these scenes were, I get it. Didn't like it, but I get it. Hillary lost all sense of humanity, was broken, mind, body and soul. She was beyond repair and wanted to exact her retribution on those she felt failed her...boy did she ever!
I forged ahead with this in spite of having read book description, can't say I wasn't warned. Yet there are no regrets here. Have not had much of an appetite because of the gory scenes but I would definitely read again, in a heartbeat.

Angel Gelique you are one sick puppy!

there were a few scenes in there I didn't like and didn't handle to well but wonder if that was Angel point to make me hate Hilary because at the beginning of this book (or even until half way through) I was on her side and even agree with two of the erm..humm what do I call them without writing spoilers...incidents..yep I'll go with that two of the incidents were justified but not the others.

Angel you are a legend and prove that females can do just as great (if not better) in the gross department and you are now up there in league with my favourite dark authors (Laymon being my fav).

People if your going to read this series please take note of the authors warnings in the burb there books are as gruesome as they get and just when you think Angel cant take it any further...she does and Hilary makes you throw up all over again.

my personal book warning, do not eat or drink anything 24 hours before or after reading this book and read in daylight hours only...best not operate an heavy machinery and read while driving to..yeah and all that jaz..

I can totally understand why this would be too much for the majority of the population of earth. I'm afraid it was totally up my alley though.

Gore, incest, blood, cannibalism, torture and all kinds of taboos - everything a girl could want.

I was ecstatic.

This was another utterly terrifying story Angel Gelique has put out. “Flesh and Blood,” part of the book’s title, is an absolute understatement. Dang. If a person is going to write extreme horror, it can’t be just a clearly conveyed passage of brutality or violence, whatever. It has to be a well-told, engaging story. This book does that, even though it is about some of the most heinous things people could do to one another. It’s all pretty convincing and you feel it.

Hillary: Flesh and Blood takes you through the story of how Hillary Greyson starts out introducing us to Hillary Greyson, a remarkable, well-adjusted, smart, well-mannered teen that any parent would be proud of. Then the book, through viscerally disturbing events takes you on a journey showing that same teenager’s descent into madness, and transformation into an utterly ruthless, extraordinarily violent serial killer – at 15 years of age. It narrates events before the first book, so the story in that sense is a big flashback. It also goes through how Hillary’s parents meet and the all-too-real impact of a cycle of abuse. And at some point I am thinking about, well, isn’t our MC making a choice, too? And it riffs off of nature vs. nurture types of discussions. So it gets you thinking too, and that’s always good when you can read a book and it’s independently thought provoking instead of just narrating. That being said, this one was so much “harder” to read than the first one because you go through and feel all this stuff that Hillary never should have endured and then watch her do so many horrible things to people who never deserved bad things. She does an excellent job conveying the mental transformation and the “learning curve” in becoming a serial killer. You can clearly see how Hillary feeds off the negative emotions and pain she creates. I found it all very visceral, tragic, and—of course—utterly terrifying.

It also had a very interesting story-line where

Angel Gelique can show you how dark a soul can be. She can take you on a journey to very VERY dark, very savage corners of the human psyche. But she does it well and even though dealing with difficult subjects, you respect and feel the story.

So I easily rate this five stars, but as I am sure you have seen in other reviews, take the warnings seriously. Though well told, this book is saturated with emotional and physical torture. It is not for just anyone.

This was the single most horrifying books I've EVER read. At one point (actually there was two times) I actually cried. I almost dnf'd it. Not because of the story or the writing. Those are great. It's what happens. I was heartbroken for Hillary and furious with her mother. It was tragic from page one. I can't help myself, I am still going to read the third book. I need to know what happens. That warning is there for a reason!

After reading Tail of the Dog (the first book in Angel Gellique's Hillary trilogy) I came to the conclusion that it was one of the most disturbing books I'd ever read. Perhaps the most disturbing, even. So, being the masochistic glutton for punishment that I am, I immediately threw myself headfirst into the next book in the series.

Well, the sequel/prequel Flesh and Blood makes Tail of the Dog seem more like The Tale of Peter Rabbit by comparison.

This book was brutal. Absolutely fucking brutal. I had to resort to taking breaks between chapters due to elevated levels of nausea, which made progress a slow and often torturous affair. Did I mention how brutal this book was?

Yet, despite this, I'm glad that I made it through to the end. The tragedy that underpins the events of this story cannot be downplayed, and I felt myself cycling through a huge range of emotional responses to the characters and events in this book - from sympathy, to disgust, all the way to oh-my-fucking-god-this-is-utterly-insane-and-I'd-really-just-like-to-go-now-please.

Gellique harnesses the very darkest elements of human nature to paint a relentless portrait of how monstrous deeds beget monsters of their own. I couldn't help but think that this must have been a true test of sheer will to put into words, at times.

One final note: If you're planning on starting this series, do heed the warnings in the blurb. Seriously.

“Who said torture and murder could’t be educational?"

description

I read the first book in this series and it was just about the most disturbing thing I'd read... until now, when I read part 2.
Jesus. H. Christ!
Honestly the stuff that Hillary goes through - and has gone through, and is involved with - should happen to no one - and certainly no child. Reading these books is almost like watching a car crash. You know you should stop looking, should just turn and walk away, but the trauma keeps your eyes glued to the action. Don't get me wrong, this story is well written and will keep you willing good things to happen to deserving people. But there is brutality in abundance. Angel Gelique is a good writer, but if you haven't got a stomach for the unpleasant, you'll probably want to stay away from Hillary and her life story.

Book two in the Hillary series, but should be read first, honestly, in order to understand what the hell is going on the the other, "Tail of the Dog".

The subject is simple: ...There is a disclaimer printed on the book. If you don't believe the disclaimer, then whatever happens to your stomach is your fault.

The writing is eloquent, visual, and engaging. Her skill is more than adequate for the horror/thriller genre. And it smelled like the author truly tried to show some sort of emotional journey for Hillary...then decided, "screw it, it's torture porn all the way". There's nothing there to elevate the gore to art. It develops into merely a big, flat canvas splattered in viscera. Even in that, the author realized it was all she had left, and Even that fails to ellicit a reaction after a while, because you care for exactly none of the characters, not even the brutalized Hillary, herself. You start off there, caring for her, then...not so much. I believe in the whole "eye for an eye" thing, but this went titanically overboard. I read it, though, all the way through, as well as Book One, which follows this one chronologically.

If an orgy of entrails with no justification is your thing, feel free. Otherwise, there's no point, really. There's no hint at all of a rainbow at the end of this steaming cauldron. Maybe in Book Three there can be some (possible) cathartic emotional breakthrough...? Self-realization, perhaps?

Thanks to the author and Goodreads for the giveaway, in which I received this one as well as "Tail of the Dog". (And I even hated the dog. Yeah, I said it.)

Edited and updated per author request for spoiler alerts. Sorry, Ms. Gelique!

Excessive. This is the word that I would use to describe this book. Spoilers are in here too.

Before I go further into my review I want to mention that I am a massive fan of gore, spatter punk and horror. I love disturbing books but this one had a scene that was totally excessive.

The story of Hillary interested me from the first book. I was looking forward to reading this and seeing what kind of sick shit Hillary got up to. This book didn't disappoint.

I'm not going to give you a run down of the story as that is done above, but it was good to see why Hillary became the way she is. However, one thing that irritated the shit out of me was the un believability of her mother. It is totally not convincing that her mother accepted Hillarys strange behaviour - despite her mother being an abused woman. I didn't think this was believable at all and it made the story a little weak.

As mentioned above, I'm a huge gore fan and I love disturbing books and movies. However the scene where Hillary cuts off her brothers penis - and when she rapes a baby with a knife, were just over the top and totally unnecessary. Had these things have happened to an adult character (the cutting of the penis did happen to Hillary's father), I probably wouldn't have cared. But to do this to babies - even though it's fiction, is (in my opinion), grasping at straws in order to merely shock or repulse the reader. It wasn't shocking to me but repulsive in that I thought it was a cheap trick. I just found it wasn't needed to make the reader feel that Hillary was totally unhinged - we already knew that.

Overall those two scene above ruined the book for me - that and the fact her mother wasn't a believable character. I personally liked the rest of the book, the gore was good, Hillary was insane and it was enjoyable. If those two scenes had been different then I probably would have liked it more.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I can not mark this book among 'the best' and still have any true intentions of living a normal life at peace with myself, and still have a redemptive hope for the cleansing of my mind and soul for what I just read.

So many people marked this book at DNF at between 75% and 86%

Why the fuck did I not listen to them for that?

Did I, Eddie finally reach my breaking point? Have I finally come to the point to where I say 'this is it, no more'?

Do I retreat to the likeness of typical bull-shit ya-paranormal romance now?

HELL NO!!!! BRING IT ON BITCH!!! The spoiler contains a letter.. from me to Hilary. It is vile, and disturbed to say the very least and YES THE LETTER IS FICTIONAL!!! :)

Angel Gelique does an amazing job of delving into the human psych to illustrate the potential evil humans are capable of inflicting upon others. In the case of Hillary, we see a young girl who after suffering through years of sexual abuse from her father and denial from her mother, spirals into a deep depression until one day she “snaps” and completely loses all traces of morality as she seeks bloody revenge on the family and friends who she felt betrayed by during her time of torment. Although it’s hard to fathom the rationality behind the acts of monstrosity Hillary commits following her inevitable mental decline, you can’t help but wonder if anyone would have gone crazy given her circumstances. Hillary felt powerless for years during her abuse, and the torture she inflicted on her victims allowed her to regain the sense of control she lost during those fragile years.

I absolutely love this series. Every book is a real page-turner from start to finish and I guarantee if you read this you will not want to put it down until you’re finished. I’m looking forward to October 31 for the gruesome conclusion to Hillary’s trilogy ;)

The author once again has not pulled any punches and consistently managed to truly horrify me. Flesh and Blood is book 2 of the Hillary series and is told through the eyes of Hillary.

We are given a much too close of a look at what happens behind closed doors. It shows the easy trope of evil, and how an innocent soul can slip, ever so gently, into the quicksand of moral depravity. You never have any illusions early on about what is going to happen, you already know what the outcome is from Tail of the Dog and but the anticipation still kills you.

It’s as twisted as a story can be. It is an unsettling, gruesome, and soul shattering read.

Flesh and Blood is not a book you'll be able to shudder shake off easily but if you're ready to look into the dark soul of human evil, this indeed is the book for you.

What a fantastic prequel. It was unique in the sense that you weren’t really sure who to side with. Everyone was wronged in one way or another. Hillary’s story is heartbreaking and it’s no surprise she ended up the way she did!
I will absolutely be reading the last book, but I think I need some recovery time first (and I don’t want the trilogy to be over yet!)
One of my new favourite authors for sure.
