Forced to the Altar

Rate this book
"You're not my prisoner."

Unfortunately, that's exactly how she felt, trapped in Zach Keller's remote castle. The handsome millionaire was supposed to be her protector, but under his watchful gaze she felt more exposed than ever. It didn't help that he evaded all personal questions — and insisted that for her safety, they must marry.

She had to find a way off Zach's property, or at least a reason to deny his proposal. Because she was on the verge of saying yes to whatever Zach demanded — especially if it meant a wedding night neither of them would ever forget.

And they lived happily ever after.

I’ve always loved that sentence. There is such hope in those words, such faith in the future and ever-after love. I’ve always been a believer, which led me to being a reader of romance novels long before I began to write them. The dance of courtship between a man and a woman, sometimes slow and bluesy, sometimes wild and uninhibited, is sheer bliss to me. And the best part about writing is creating these two dancers who find their perfect partners out of all the other people on the planet.

What brings them together? What could tear them apart? Why do they stick it out through the bad times? Why do they fall more in love with each other every day? Finding the answers to these questions intrigues me. Who are you? I ask them. Some characters give me an hour-long monologue; others clam up until I push the right buttons. Eventually, I get them all to talk, even if I have to torture them a little.

On my journey to becoming a writer, I did a lot of the usual things—married, had children, attended college a little later than the average coed and earned a B.A. in English. Some not-so-usual things happened, too. Life constantly changes, and so we must grow. It’s not a bad thing.

I’ve been fortunate enough to win some awards and receive some honors, which are listed elsewhere on this site. I’ve had the great privilege of working with an exceptional editor from my first book on. My community of writers spans the entire country—smart, funny and loyal people who share and give and support. Without them, this once-upon-a-time journey wouldn’t be anywhere near as fun.

Julianne Johnson gets shipped to an isolated island community to weather her brother’s imminent trial. She’s to be employed by Zack Keller, a reclusive, enigmatic, sexy man with an apparently very secret profession. Helicopters come and go, there are strange noises about the house…And there’s no chance those noises might actually come from a ghost.
When the curious Julianne stumbles upon Zack’s secret, the only remedy to the situation is marriage.

A rather unique take on the marriage-of-convenience plot. She has to marry him not for money, not for an inheritance, not because of a baby, but because a wife cannot testify against her husband.

Pity the pacing was way off and the characters bland and one-dimensional. The hero’s cause turned out to be a noble one, there was no ghost, but yet another of the hero’s secrets, the heroine was still a virgin (though she was, thankfully, only 23), and there wasn’t much romance, just a few rather flat bedroom scenes.

And the abrupt ending didn’t help matters much. I’m really tired of these instantaneous endings without any groveling on the hero’s part.
He more or less throws her out of his house, keeps her waiting for six weeks, the one day shows up at her doorstep, mutters an "I love you," emphasized by a chest-thump, barks and order of "Come back to me," and she just sighs, flutters her eyelashes, and whispers a demure, "Okay." The End

As far as trashy romance novels go, this one was actually pretty good in that 1)the characters were intersting *and* believable 2)it wasn't actually trashy and 3)the plot was pretty plausible. My only complaint was that everything was tied up a little too quickly and neatly at the end, but I suspect that's mainly because Mills and Boon-type novels have a word count they are supposed to stick close to. Otherwise, it was a light, interesting read with a bit of mystery that kept me intertained.

Very suspenseful! Not what I expected from a "romance novel". I really enjoyed this book!
