Derek Vaughn is the brother of the Alpha of the Bay Harbor Wolves and the Pack “Fixer.” If there is a problem, Derek is the one who makes it go away, sometimes to the bottom of the Bay. He’s a dark and deadly man, known for keeping his own company. He follows no rules except for his own and those of his brother, Alpha Henrik Vaughn. Walking through Eastport late one night, on his way back from a mission for his brother, Derek happens upon a fight in an alley. Usually, Derek wouldn’t concern himself with the business of others, but something about this was different. He felt compelled to save this little human. Fending off the Jackals with ease, only when he got a good look at the human was all made clear, this man was his mate. A mate wasn’t something Derek ever wanted to trouble himself with. He was too comfortable in his ways to consider the needs of another, but face to face with the most beautiful creature he’d ever laid eyes on all that went away. Derek knew this was his future. Now all is not right in Eastport and Bay Harbor, there is insurrection and criminal elements at play that put both the Pack and Derek’s newly found mate in serious jeopardy. Can Derek take it all on and protect not only his mate but his brother and his home as well?
Leo Russo is a bartender at the Indigo Hotel in Eastport, on a beautiful bay on Lake Michigan. This resort city of over 60,000 was meant to be his refuge, his hideaway, but it seems the problems he left behind in Chicago have found him. Walking down a dark alley after two in the morning, Leo is jumped by two-man and he wonders if this is it. All seemed lost until a dark stranger stepped into the alley and saved him. That dark man is Derek Vaughn, the brother of his employer over at the Indigo Hotel. Leo wonders what a man like Derek would want with him, but he just can’t seem to deny the man. With trouble brewing, Leo wonders if he can hold on to Derek and the possibility of tomorrow. Dark forces are surrounding them and it’s anyone’s guess who is really behind it all.
In Eastport and Bay Harbor, nothing is as it seems.

B.A Stretke began writing as a hobby. He read his first Jane Austen novel as a teen and was instantly hooked. The age-old dream of being a novelist took hold. He loves hiking through the Northern Michigan woods he calls home, often finding inspiration for his books. Writing and finding that perfect cup of coffee occupy the rest of his time.
B.A. Stretke lives in Northern Michigan with one royally spoiled cat and his dear friends and family.
I liked this story. I liked the main characters and the storyline. It was paced nicely and I liked the back stories. Loner finds his mate who also has secrets of his own. Relationship between Derek and his brother Henrik was also good. Both brothers sounded extremely powerful. Excited about reading the next book!
Written by an author with an eight year old understanding of language. One example: their vs they’re. My standard is not super high here—author appears to mass produce which is easy to do from his home in Napierville IL. Oh wait, my mistake character’s home. Did he mean Naperville IL? Or a fictional town in location of real town. Okay, two examples....read if you like paragraph long sentences followed up by a sentence fragment. Criticism of language—check, criticism of lack of research—check, criticism of editing....incoming. Okay, okay THREE examples (but of different types of mistakes)—Derek goes to Derek’s apartment to move Derek’s things from said apartment to Alpha mansion but it is not Derek who has apartment it is Leo. Writing is not good. (review style attempts to be similar style to book writing). The story is okay. If you love Alpha, etc then it is okay. I read this twice a month apart to ensure I could be more fair. I am off to re read book two—wish me luck?
There seem to be a few editing mistakes throughout, stuff I could gloss over. But the changing POV every other sentence was a little annoying. It's not a bad story, I can do the whole insta-love thing any day, but it all just seemed a little rushed, a lot could have been expanded upon. More dialogue and more description wouldn't have hurt. I wanted to like this more, all my favorite tropes are in here, but it just wasn't enough.
I've read several Crimson Coven Vampire stories by B. A. Stretke. I wanted to try one of his Wolf shifter books since I found his Vampire books so entertaining. I was not disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book of the Bay Harbor series. When I explored a little more I saw that the author used to participate in the KU program during which time I was able to read a couple of his Wolf shifter books back in 2015. I'm just sorry I hadn't read more.
I purchased this book because the Sample was so compelling. The story was rich with varied characters, deception, shock, fated mates, pack politics, a tough Omega, an ice cold Alpha Enforcer who was also the Pack Alpha's brother. Secondary characters that really added to the story of the secret existence of paranormals. There was action, violence, and shifter power on full display.
But in the midst of all this was a sweet passionate love story between two men one a Wolf shifter and the other an unsuspecting Human. I already purchased the remaining two books in the set. I am very eager to read Volume Two based on how this first book ended. I recommend this series!
This was just awesome! A new series I can't wait for more.
Derek is a lone wolf enforcer but not, he takes care of problems that arise within his brothers pack but doesn't really socialize with anyone but Henrik his alpha brother.
Leo is a human in a new town working in a hotel bar owned by Henrik and Derek when one night he is saved by Derek who ends up being his mate.
I loved the fast pace of this story and how these two had a strong bond within a day, which is Stretke's normal storyline and I have no problem with the structure. It's all fantasy and we all use our imagination which what makes it fun and enjoyable. I never really notice if there are spelling errors or sentence structure errors that's how into the story I get with my minds visual.
Thank you B. A. Stretke for another marvelous book, I can't wait for the next book. I definitely recommend this book!
Derek Vaughn is a lone wolf of his pack, pretty much left to his own devices. The only one whose orders or voice he listens to is his brother Henrik, the Alpha of Bay Harbor. After completing a mission for his brother he comes across two jackals attacking a human and on intervening on behalf of the human, realises that Leo is his mate. Leo Russo has some family issues of his own that have come back to haunt him and together the pack and Derek set out to help him.
This book is short but sweet, though a shifter romance. I enjoyed it. This was a nice quick read and the romance was well done. I'm looking forward to reading the second book, too.
I give this 3.5*** actually but there's no 1/2 rating here so it comes up as a 3.
I was so happy when I saw a new book (and series) by this author. Yesss!!!! I love his style of writing and this story was totally captivating. Derek was a magnificent and very strong character (wolf) who was mated to a human, Leo. There was lots of suspense, action, danger, excitement, and love. I appreciated the way that Derek expressed his heartfelt emotions for Leo. They were definitely a provocative pair. I enjoyed the world building along with this powerful pack. I was thoroughly pulled into the story and I remained enthralled from beginning to end. I'm really looking forward to reading the next book in this series. Incredible. =)
This book introduces a wolf pack on the shore of Lake Michigan. This is a wealthy pack with influence and a fixer in the alphas brother, Derek, a cold ruthless protector of his pack. Derek interrupts a beating of a human one night to find his mate. Leo is on the run from a cruel uncle who wants him and his brother dead so he can steal their inheritance. Derek has to woo his human, protect him and deal with rebellion in the pack. Lots of action and love with a HEA.
A new B. A. Stretke read. This one about Wolves rather than vamps. The pacing is fast which you'd expect in a Stretke book. Leo, the human, and Derek, Head Enforcer for his pack, meet when Derek interrupts two Jackal shifters beating on Leo in a dark alley. Not used to the softer side of life, Derek is amazed to find out that Leo is his mate. A mate that he'll do anything to protect. B A Stretke is a consistent writer. Book was enjoyable as usual. And a very quick read.
I like the story, the world building, and the characters. All the critical building blocks of a story are there. Unfortunately, the book needs heavy editing. There were typos and grammar errors that really took away from the story. Some small issues with repetition but overall the story itself was quite good. If this one had went through a tough editor prior to publication, it would have been a five star read.
I love this author gives you characters who are quirky and different; I want to know more about the bear shifters he described, Sam’s uncle’s vampire coven. More about Henrik and Max but also Zayn’s mate. This author is one of those that can make you laugh and can make you cry. So; we wait and see what he’ll give you.
This was such a fun new series. I love that Leo fell in love pretty fast, but I wouldn't say that it was insta-love. Derek seemed to be exactly what Leo needed, and when he needed Derek's special skills, nothing could keep Derek from his mate.
It will be interesting to see how Max and Henrik work out.
I loved it. The author writing has come such a long way! I have devoured all his books and I very much enjoyed this one.........I cannot wait for the next. ..and I hope that being the alpha we will have some good seen of possessive and protective mate. Thank you so much for the book.
Great for people looking for something simple and quick with very little conflict that is easily solved. For me, I would have rather the story take more time to explore the characters and their relationship. It felt like the few moments that established a connection between Leo and Derik, like easy conversations, were summarized unless they were sex scenes.
Neither of the main characters had any personality. only thing I can say about the bottom that he was he was helpless and about the the top that he was strong and aloof. There was barely a plot too. They met, "fell in love"- and by that I meant they had sex twice and that was about 80% of the story.
Awesome writing as usual. Read your Pittsburgh's Vampire, Blood and Bone series and can't wait for the next book in the The St Louis Vampire series but this book seem to have a little some more! Can't wait for Henrik and Max story.
I very much wish this was 100 pages longer. It's hard to understand Leo just accepting the fact that paranormal creatures exist without a freak out & part of that might just be because the book wasn't long enough to explore his feelings.
I like the the characters and over all read of the book. I enjoyed the fast paced excitement and slow paced loving. The story line was well written and the set up to the next book a true cliffhanger.
So I brought this book by accient…. And thought if I didnt like it at least i didn’t waste a lot of money. However, a nice suprise being that I ended up loving it! Such a fun, quick and easy read to get lost in for a few hours.
I have read these books before and I will read them again I love reading the series over and over specially Pittsburgh vampires I checked everyday to see if there's a new book by the sort of I love everything and I read so far and like I said I read them all the time
The story’s premise was good and I enjoyed the characters. It was quite short, so not a lot of room for character development, and some rather glaring editorial mistakes caught my attention here and there. But overall an enjoyable read.
