When Christopher Edison’s marriage ended in disaster and his years of military service finally took a toll on him, he said goodbye to modern conveniences and settled into a quiet life in the country. There, he embraced a life free from the constraints of modern technology and life on the “outside”, but soon, his quiet life is no more. The country has gone powerless, which for him, doesn’t mean much… until someone needs his help. The altruistic former soldier knows not to turn his back on a person in need, so he does the right thing, but the right decision doesn’t always lead to a perfect outcome. Follow Christopher’s heroic journey as he reluctantly re-enters society and struggles to fit in in the new world.
The premise is good, if getting overused, and the main character is decent, but all the rest are cardboard cutouts. You have a liberal hippy in a relationship with a prepper compound leader who seams to have no power, an evil usurper who has no depth other than to kill everyone, even his best friend, a strange ally that is a fake army major, retired, with a group of militia who seems fine with everyone being worried about friends stabbing them in the back. The hardest part to understand is why the MC stays with this group when all he wanted to do was live alone off grid. Seems totally idiotic. Plot, well that just jumps around like the writer just wrote whatever came in his head... sorry, this one is a pass.
A good PA story about two compounds of survivors after an EMP attack. Story starts with one man living off the grid + 2 compounds of survivalists. Therefore no detailed scenes of foraging for water, food, or basic survival. Story jumps right in with scenes of alpha males fighting for dominance in control. The story moves along quickly and is well written and edited. Leaves you ready to jump right into book 2 which is available. I recommend this book to those who enjoy the PA genre, a fairly quick read
Okay post -apocalyptic fiction. A former soldier Chris lives alone on his farm. His wife and son have left. An EMP event has struck and he's making out okay on his farm. A traumatic event brings him into contact with the residents of a nearby compound. The compound's in the middle of a power struggle, with the founder Conrad, being undermined by Seth. When Seth orchestrates a takeover, Conrad's girlfriend Annie is forced to call for help from another compound. That compound's leader Diamond is not all that he seems. The story builds up to an explosive end.
Gave this book a 4 star because I did finish it and the story line did keep me reading.....but it just did not keep me reading quickly and wanting more. Could be where I’m at with books currently, but after finishing this read, I was not interested in book two, at all. The characters were well drawn out, I’ll admit that, but they were not likable enough to want to be irritated with them in book two.
I enjoyed reading this book. Lots of action although I hate loose ends. Chris goes off to war without making provisions for the care of his farm especially the animals. I’m sure the author thought that was understood but I want to know about it. Strangely enough the Chinese are attacking. Can’t wait for that explanation.
An excellent read for anyone interested in post-apocalyptic books. A sure fire way to realise that not all communities are safe, not only from attack but also from dissidents from within.
Almost from jump the story had me feeling anxious and it continued throughout for Chris, Anne, and Conrad. Seth and Diamond are not to be trusted so it should be interesting how things play out.
I really enjoyed reading this book. But there was spot left out, I hope it will be answered in the next book. Who took care of the farm and what happened to the refugees left there? But it is still a good story
Good character development, if a little two dimensional, good story line add good dialogue. The story kept me reading. I do wish I knew more about Chris’ background.
It started good .but I didn't like the ending. What if I can not fine or want the next book? What happen to chris wife and son? Questions and more questions.
Simplistic story badly written, sorry but it just doesn't flow or make sense. The spiteful, mean, rednneck overtones are disturbing .. Not for me thanks.
