Daughter of Winter

Rate this book
Marked by an ancient prophecy wielded by the gods.
Shackled to a dark, enigmatic stranger.
And prey to a powerful adversary seeking vengeance.

Her life will never be the same again . . .

Intrigue and danger enter Brydie MacKay's life when Gage walks into her carefully controlled world. He brings news that her grandmother has died, and as her last living relative, Brydie has inherited her estate and must travel to Scotland to accept her legacy and all it entails.

Brydie doesn't want the inheritance, not after the way she was treated, and when a series of actions unfold that illustrate her 'legacy' is not just a physical entity but a turbulent birthright proclaiming she is the descendant of the Celtic winter goddess, Cailleach Bheur, she tries to run.

But Gage won't take no for an answer. He has his own role to fulfil and will do whatever it takes to ensure Brydie returns to Scotland with him—even if that means taking her against her will.

Daughter of Winter is the first book in a dark fantasy romance series based on the myths and legends of the Celtic winter goddess, Cailleach Bheur. Featuring dark magic, druids, fae, selkies, mythical creatures, and a morally grey hero with an enemies-to-lovers romance, it is perfect for fans of From Blood and Ash, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and the Fever series.

The premise of this series is really interesting, however the characters and writing fell flat enough that I won't continue the series.

Brydie spends much of her time wallowing in self pity. Yes, she has gone through a lot, but girl needs some serious therapy. She can't seem to stop being a deer in headlights and just reacting to everything and freaking out, rather than stopping and thinking. It makes it a very hard sell that she could ever be the strong heroine she is destined by prophecy to become.

Gage is an asshole, simple as that. He is self-absorbed and coercive, and has a "his way or the highway" attitude that ignores basically everything anyone else is going through. Oh you have emotions and feelings? Gage doesn't care, he's doing what he thinks needs to be done whether you like it or not. Even if it means kidnapping you from your bed. Creepy. Never will forgive him for the cat.

It's was clearly hinting at a future enemies-to-lovers scenario but even that was forced, with a pretty clear unnatural "bond" attraction happening ("shocks" when they touch each other, sexual attraction that comes out of nowhere, etc.)

The writing style felt very childish. Every fifth sentence seemed to end with an exclamation point. The flashback scenes seemed better written, but everything present day was just painful to read.

This book really intrigued me. I wasn't really expecting to like it as much as I did. I'm a sucker for anything Fae and/or fated mate/destinies and this one was right up my alley. I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Douglas' writing style, and I can't wait to get my hands on book two.

I was excited to start this, as I liked the premise and the reviews are really good.

Unfortunately, it just felt a bit lackluster. It's hard to really pin point exactly what I didn't enjoy, as its not a bad book, but it ended up being one I just wanted to get finished.

Brydie herself was a bit irritating, I guess. I didn't find her particularly likeable or interesting. I felt sorry for her having a destiny thrust upon her, but her reactions and behaviour didn't endear her to me. I'm sure she'll develop loads throughout the series, but I found i didn't really care.

Gage was a little bit more interesting, but again, I didn't really like him much either. There was also not that much chemistry between them.

The use of celtic mythology was interesting, and I like the switching to the origin story of the Curse, although their placement felt a little random. It is also decently written.

So, overall, this is probably a case of 'it's not you it's me' with this book, but I don't think I'll be picking up the next one.

The concept of Celtic mythology playing out in modern-day Scotland is incredibly appealing. Tie that background in with an ancient prophecy and you have a stellar plotline to follow.

However, you have to be able to write well and go deep with your world-building. Otherwise, trying to bounce between past and present and weave in mythological understanding for your audience will be difficult. The characters should be well-developed and strong enough to hold their own on the page without the support of one specific character intervening on their behalf all the time.

The FMC and MMC characters, Brydie & Gage, don't try to fight for their own way in this world; they roll over and accept it like good dogs. Seriously?! No, not for me. They both claim to hate it so much, but they do nothing to overcome their fates.

I really wanted to like this unique concept, but I can't bring myself to finish the book and I will not be continuing the series.

I was super hyped to read this book - a dark adventure/romance based on Celtic mythology? Yes please!! Sadly, this book just didn't completely do it for me. I am on the fence about how much I like or dislike it. Ultimately, I am somewhere in the middle. I can absolutely respect the love of Celtic mythos, and the fascination with Druids and the old Celtic religion. It's so enticing, and part of that is because of the lack of information we actually have. And I know so many people, myself included, who at one time or another have thought, well what if they did write something down?? Of course, Corina Douglas answers that with the use of Ogham script, an early Medieval Irish script. I don't mind suspending my doubts and allowing myself to be swept off into a story in the least, but I want the story to really carry me away. In so many ways, this story did just that - I was really in the moment and I wanted to know what would happen next. The combination of present day, flashbacks, and different POVs was great. I got sucked in and I wanted to really understand this world and how the characters were placed in it. I loved the idea that the Celtic gods/goddesses were real or could manifest in our world, and that there was magic in the modern day setting. There was a lot of action, and so I blew through this book so quickly.

Despite the positive, there were some negatives. First, I was really angry about Gage. He was such an ass, and the whole cat thing really pissed me off. Why include a cat at all? Rather than coming across as a gruff, strong body-guard sort, Gage comes across as a bit of an incel to be honest, and I didn't like him at all. There was also plenty of time during their times together for him to give her more answers and to build trust, but he just...didn't. Instead, he chose to remain mysterious and creepy. Overall I can be very forgiving when it comes to weird characters and decisions, after all they are "human" and they cannot be perfect, where would be the fun in that? But I do think that the main love interest/protector should be at least a bit more likeable. I also felt like Bry was almost a blank slate - a typical orphan with secret powers but not much in the way of personality. I wanted to like her, but she sort of fell flat. I hope she gets more fleshed out in the future books. There were also times when the writing seemed clunky, and like more of a first draft than a finished manuscript. I think the book would have benefitted from another round of edits with a critical editor. I don't think things needed to be removed as much as added or reworded. Lastly, I want to know the rules for the Druidic magic - so is the amount of energy a druid has for his power connected to how much they have eaten? Do they need to eat in order to perform magic? Are there other limitations? What are the things he cannot do, and where does this power come from? I need to know the limits.

Overall I didn't think it was a terrible book, but also not fantastic. The concept was great, and I would love to see it fleshed out more, enough so that I will probably read at least the next book, if not the whole series just to find out more about the world.

It was kind of confusing since we got a lot of information regarding the prophecy and everything. Lots of information to process. It set up a really interesting storyline. I’m excited to see where it goes. It did feel like half a book though. I’m betting it probably could’ve just combined with the next book and been longer and it would’ve made more sense.

I was excited to read this book as the premise intrigued me, but unfortunately I was disappointed.

The first red flag was when the author started the book by saying "I know how beautiful Celtic names are supposed to be pronounced, but instead I'm going to ignore all that and butcher the pronunciation completely because I want to". Why write a book based on Scottish lore and mythology, and then absolutely disregard a massive part of it: the language and names?

The writing was juvenile, with strange sentence structure at times, and way too many exclamation points.

The main female character, Brydie, was a wimp, constantly wallowing in self pity, with some random uncharacteristic actions (e.g. the whole club scene - right after she said she hates clubbing, suddenly she's dancing without a care in the world). Oh but she was beautiful and amazing because she's the main female character, so of course everyone is in love with her.

Gage was an asshole through and through, to everyone, and his behaviour towards Brydie was beyond creepy. Any bond or sexual tension between them felt incredibly forced and seemed to be there just so that the author could claim the enemies to lovers trope. Kidnapping her and leaving the poor cat behind was such a dick move that made him more of a villain than Talorgan, in my eyes.

The author warned that each book will end in a cliffhanger, but to me it just seemed like the first book was cut short. There was no suspense or a cliffhanger per se, it just ended as if you cut a book in half after a random chapter.

The story was a wasted potential, it could have been much better as the idea was good and original. Regrettably, I cannot say I will be reaching for the second book.

After weeks of reading slump, I finally found a book that ended that slump. I wasn't expecting to like this book, I usually decides to read a book based on their book cover, and I did not regret trying out this one. If you guys have the time, try to read this series. This is far too exciting to not read in a one sitting.

Anyway, here's my reaction while I was reading the first book:

Phase 1 is so fucked up. Imagine eating a bull raw, without even cleaning it. That's downright disgusting.

Hold up, what does he mean by that they are the only ones left in the prophecy? Can someone please explain it to me?

I feel like the reason Nora left her is because she thought that if she didn't tell the world that she has a granddaughter then she won't be hunted by what's been hunting them. I really want to know Nora's side of the story, as well as, her father.

Excuse me? How dare you leave the cat? You should have brought him with you.

I just don't understand why Talorgan is so angry towards Tritus when he didn't even do anything other than be himself. His reason for not liking him is because he became easily friends with his brother and he doesn't like that, because he believes that his brother should only be his. When he saw that Tritus caught a doe, he also wanted to hunt one so his brother and the others will be proud of him. And when they got caught by the goddess (I can't spell her name), Tritus showed him mercy and yet he didn't even feel thankful, instead his hate for him intensified. He's such a fucking weirdo.

Intriguing story but crap writing. I felt like I was reading an intro to a book but somehow it lasted the entire book. It always felt like you were waiting for something to happen and it just ... Never did.... Writing itself was hard to read at *best* and had me feeling like I was reading someone's first attempt at writing a book while they are in high school still and haven't gotten to the editing stage.

Don't recommend 😅😅

I've been looking for new genres of books to get into, and gosh darn booktok recommended this series and since it was done by a smaller indie author I was excited! I couldn't put it down! Had action, mystery, magic, ancient historic value and the world was painted very well. Could not wait to finish and start book two!

DNF’d with 50 pages left. I haven’t DNF’d a book in almost a decade. I had such high hopes for the plot, but the writing was childish and the characters fell flat. By the time I got 85% of the way through I knew there wouldn’t be an ending, and I was not going to move on with the series. If I saw one more exclamation point I might have exploded into an irrational violent rage like the MMC.

While I wish this book was longer I do feel like it gave quite a bit and will probably continue with the series.
Give this a read if you enjoy unknown powers, druid type magic, prophecies and multiple POVs in different centuries

Short, fast paced, and so good!

I loved the Celtic aspects and the different POVs and timelines. Usually books that alternate between past and present make me lose focus and interest, but this was done REALLY well! Definitely recommend!

This story is intriguing as hell!
It’s very clear the writer has set this series up to be a heart wrenching story in an epic world!
The main characters are flawed and charming, held by fate a brooding guardian who clearly has a lot to consider, a descendant of winter who has no idea the prophecy they were born into. The writing is great an easy read with phenomenal flow!

Soooooo excited to read the second instalment!!! I just now need to try to find the damn thing on paperback!!

A wonderful and most enjoyable urban fantasy read with an ancient Celtic setting. I loved the way Douglas gave the backstory of the prophecy that affects the two main characters Brydie and Gage. The double timeline is very well done and cleverly constructed, to keep you guessing and make you want more. I can't wait to get my hands on the next volume!

This book was very good. I liked that the MMC was so devoted to protecting the FMC. And having the FMC come to herself and realize what she is, & how to use her powers.
It was a very easy read and caught myself reading long hours into the night.

Will not continue series.

The first installment of the series has a very interesting world and an intriguing plot. However the MMC / romantic interest is a walking red flag. The man is incredibly self-absorbed, coercive, violent, and is abusive towards FMC. I have no doubt that the emotional abuse exhibited in this story will evolve into including physical abuse in later volumes. There are also several plot holes regarding whom the catalyst of prophecy would be that depending on the reader can be overlooked. Personally I found them to be mildly annoying until further information for plot and character development turned them into glaring flaws in the overall story arc.

Look... I'm not a SJM fan, but you can not sit there and honestly tell me that this book and this series compares at all to her writing and world building. Well, that's what Miss Douglas did; compared this series to Throne of Glass.

Not only is this NOT an "epic" fantasy, but it's very poorly written. The best parts of the book were the flash back scenes, and there's very few of them.

The MFC is worse than a wet blanket. She's utterly useless, and I was genuinely rooting for her death. I'd honestly rather have a wet blanket than read the rest of this series.

A fast paced well crafted story, by a first time author! Corina has brilliantly woven Celtic mythology into modern day settings with characters that draw you in, making you want to know more.
Unbeknownst to Brydie she is the heir to an ancient prophecy that now must be fulfilled so when the mysterious Gage appears, her life, as she knows it, will never be the same.
I couldn’t put it down and can’t wait for the next installment.

WOW! Daughter of Winter is hands down the best fantasy novel I have read in a long time.
I was drawn in straight away and addicted by chapter 2.

The characters are rich and real, they have real depth to them. I'm especially loving the relationship between Bridie and Gage. The sexual tension leaps off the page.

I'm a big fan of Fantasy and I'd put Corina Douglas in the same league as Sarah J Maas, Karen Marie Moning and Jennifer Estep.
I can't wait to start the next book.

This book is beautifully written. Enough knowledge of the environment without making it too wordy with unneeded additives. The changes in character perspectives and time lines is flawlessly done not repeating the story where you feel like you are rereading the previous chapter but a continuation creating a beautiful flow. The slow build up allows you to immerse yourself into the world and i cant wait to read more. Very well done!
