Opportunity Knocks: The Story of How Hope and Opportunity Can Change Everything

Rate this book
Senator Tim Scott knows adversity. As the son of a single mother from North Charleston, South Carolina, he struggled to get through school and had his dreams of a college football career shattered by a car wreck. But thanks to his mother and a few mentors along the way, he learned that "failure isn't failure unless you quit." He also learned that it's hard work and perseverance, not a government handout, that will get you ahead in life.
Today, Senator Scott is the only black Republican in the Senate, and he believes that investment and commerce are the best ways to rebuild our most impoverished communities. This is the idea behind his signature piece of legislation, the "opportunity zones" program, which President Trump has strongly endorsed. The program provides tax incentives for businesses that invest in low-income urban areas, seeking to replace things like welfare and government assistance.
In Opportunity Knocks, Senator Scott will tell his life story with a focus on adversity and opportunity. He will teach readers about the principles of hard work and hope while addressing the dangers of veering too far toward socialist policies. The book will also not shy away from discussions of racism and racial inequality in the United States, and will recount some of Senator Scott's own brushes with racism as well as the many discussions he's had with people who want to help, including President Trump.

I read his book, because, well, I wanted to know about this guy who is--for better or worse--famous for being the only Black Republican Senator.

--He's truly a good guy. I think he's trustworthy, honorable, and hardworking. I seriously don't doubt his motivations or skills.

--I do disagree with him on a number of things, from the Wall to his support of Trump. Unlike someone like GOP Senator Ben Sasse, his admiration seems a tad naive and blinded by his conservative stance. I, frankly, understand that--but I disagree with it.

--One thing to note is that, despite an early professional life, he's pretty much a career politician. Proof that you kinda need these career guys to properly and politely do their stuff.

--He wasn't blind to the issue of race. He does tell an amusingly depressing story of how some bigwig kept calling him Cory Booker.

--I like him. Still a #NeverTrump-er.

Tim Scott is an outstanding American. He deserves everything he has achieved. A true man of God, he has taken what life delivered to him and made the best of things, succeeding in the face of adversity, and has made a name for himself and a place in history. This book is such an encouragement for all people, young or old, no matter what their background might be.

As a memoir, this doesn't give much of a behind-the-scenes view into the making of Tim Scott, nor are his arguments for his marque policy of Opportunity Zones particularly thorough. But I did learn a lot about how Scott thinks and how he views the world.

If I could have only one politician speak to the students of Lancaster Bible College | Capital Seminary and Graduate School in 2021, it would be Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina (2013-present).

Why? Senator Scott epitomizes "the American Dream," a dream achieved by hard work, with others, and in dependence on God.

Interestingly, Senator Scott begins his book by recounting a very unusual and unexpected response of President Trump in the wake of the 2017 Charlottesville riots. Scott had criticized a remark made by the President and was "summoned" to the White House. An interesting conversation ensued, which included a questions from the President that shocked Scott: Trump asked, "What can I do to help?"

Scott was ready with an answer. He unveiled his Opportunity Zones legislation, a program that infuses private investments in depressed areas classified as Opportunity Zones. These areas comprise more than 30 million Americans! What started as a very uncomfortable and potentially divisive conversation became the launching pad for Scott's key legislative initiative.

Scott's philosophical approach to achieving "success" in this country can be seen in these words:
"My dream is that they will begin to realize that their energy and skills are the most important tools for moving ahead and partaking of the prosperity that is achievable in our nation. My hope is that they will come to understand that progress--REAL progress--comes from what individuals do for themselves--and not what is simply handed to them." p. 25.
Family plays a significant role in the life of this man. Senator Scott expands his Twitter biography in Opportunity Knocks, "Just a South Carolinian living his mother's American Dream." Scott is quick to credit is grandmother and his mother for the pivotal roles they have played in his life:
In spite of all the challenges in front of her, Grandmother was always happy, always encouraging. I liken our family to 2 Timothy 1, where the spiritual heritage of Timothy runs through his grandmother and mother, as does mine. Prayer, hard work, love, encouragement, and discipline, she was truly the embodiment of why we are here. Her prayer walk was so important to us, and she was responsible for what was the closest I have every come to seeing a miracle." p. 30
I appreciate Senator Scott's work. A man with all the reasons to blame others and wait on recompense; he doesn't do that. Scott lives in the tension of an ugly past, tenuous present, and hopeful future.

As to the past injustices: "While I do not believe we can blame all of our issues on what occurred in the past, we need to have a true reckoning with what those tragic times really meant. Whether it's the Trail of Tears, or slavery, or Japanese internment camps during World War II, there are long-lasting scars on the psyches of certain groups of people in this country. And when we come together to solve problems, it is absolutely necessary for us to consider their frames of reference even if it makes us a little uncomfortable." p. 53

As to the present: "My hope for our country was born on an Air Force base. One American family, one American patchwork quilt. The patches are black and white, red and brown, bound together by the threads of democracy, the hope of freedom. . . . I would learn to fight for people of varying backgrounds because I felt like it was my responsibility, my job; it was as if the good Lord gave me a passion for protecting and seeking justice for all people." p. 54

As to the future: "Success is created in studio apartments and garages, at kitchen tables, and in classrooms across the nation, not in government conference rooms in Washington." p. 251 Scott's vision of success hinges on hard work, sacrifice, and appropriate governmental assistance. Chapter 15 details his 2030 vision for America.

I appreciated that Scott does not pull punches when it comes to racial bias, neither does he lean on it as a sole rationale for economic and educational disparities. He lives in that uneasy tension and, in doing so, helps to bridge political divides.

Some of my highlights from Opportunity Knocks

Words to live by: Congressman John Lewis told him, "Never, ever become bitter." p. 43

One of my favorite Senator Scott quotes: It's hard to insult people into changing their minds." pp. 55, 238

Senator Scott's life testimony "My life is a testament to God's love, a mother's love, and the love of my mentor." p. 44 (In a speech he delivered on the Senate floor in July 2016)

Thoughts on failure: "My biggest victory at that point was in defeat, an experience I would encounter over and over again. . . . Defeat opens our eyes to the experiences that we may not have otherwise seen." p. 129

The importance of relationships: It is easier to get a job with a relationship than with a resume." p. 226 In light of that he encourages young aspiring professionals to get on someone's team even if they are there as an intern.

President Theodore Roosevelt once said, "Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the change to work hard at work worth doing." Senator Scott exemplifies these words in life, business, and politics. As a fellow Christian, I appreciate the Senator's unapologetic and unwavering faith in Christ.

Great book about a great man! Senator Tim Scott is just what America needs. I’ve seen him in person on several occasions in Goose Creek, South Carolina (grocery shopping and working out at the gym). No matter where he goes, he’s always working to make America great. Senator Tim Scott loves the Lord, his mom, America, and Envy apples. The only troubling remark I read was that he won’t be in Washington in 2030. I could easily see Senator Tim Scott (possibly paired with Nikki Haley) as America’s Vice President or President. I’ll be praying that you have a change of heart regarding Washington 2030, Senator Scott.

This book reminded me that there are good politicians out there but they often get drowned out by the loudness and polarization of party politics. I liked Tim Scott’s ideas about solving the divide in America and giving everyone opportunity for success....investing in communities that are struggling. I especially like how he said that one way to heal the divide is to look in the mirror to recognize our own prejudices and biases. “The gift of self-awareness is one seldom opened.”

An American Classic.

I greatly appreciated Mr. Scotts' candid,h transparent and honesty in expressing his beliefs and core values. I support his notion that our elected leaders should not be allowed to stonewalled and drag out legislation that serves each and every legal citizen. Time is of the essence and the clock is ticking faster and faster

Listened to Audible narrated by the author. Enjoyed hearing the Senator’s life story and the rationale behind his beliefs. The reason I am knocking off a star is because the story had a non-linear and difficult to follow format. Otherwise, great for anyone interested in politics / general memoirs.

One of the best political biographies I’ve read in some time. Very positive in tone. As new as it is, it wasn’t written with the spring and early summer of 2020 having happened.

A fine book that elucidates Mr. Scott's positions, but it was lacking on serious substance and even details on Opportunity Zones and felt more like an extended campaign website than a book.

An inspiring story from a less than optimal childhood

A story of looking, finding and grabbing opportunities. I thoroughly enjoyed Senator Scott's story. He's unabashedly filled with faith and walks the talk. I look forward to watching his future rise in the GOP. Maybe President someday as he dreamed.

Wonderful and insightful!

I really enjoyed this book and learning how Senator Scott started his journey and became a US Senator. It was also eye-opening to read about how legislation comes into law and how hard Senator Scott has worked to make America a better place for everyone. We need many more elected officials like him!
