Star Wars: X-Wing Rogue Squadron, Vol. 3: Battleground: Tatooine

Rate this book
The crime and death caused by Jabba the Hutt is nothing compared to the chaos created in the wake of his demise. Jabba's legacy is a cache of stolen Imperial hardware and weapons, hidden somewhere on the desert world of Tatooine. Whoever finds the treasure will have enough firepower to rule the planet and perhaps even the sector. And that means Rogue Squadron must find it first, or else find it aimed at their heads!

This is an excellent story with strong, memorable characters. An attentive reader can appreciate the plot turns and intrigue, along with some unpredictability. I look forward to reading more in the series. As a bonus, this volume also contains a reprint of an early Rogue Squadron comic that was available only from a Kellogg's cereal box!

Continuing with this interesting series. This time the crew go to Tatooine to attend Biggs memorial service. What actually happens is a lot more than they expect. Really loved the twist at the end and did not see that coming. Graphics are decent and storyline is good. Recommended for all types of Star Wars fans.

Dark Horse Comics: Star Wars Rogue Squadron issues #9-12. Wow this was an extremely satisfying story with lots of action and justice winning the day. Great battles and subterfuge. Artwork was excellent. Great job Dark Horse and thanks Marvel for buying the rights and reprinting.

Star Wars Legends Project #306

Background: Battleground: Tatooine was published in 4 issues from June-Sept 1996. It is the third Rogue Squadron story arc. It was written by Michael A. Stackpole and Jan Strnad, with art by John Nadeau. Stackpole wrote for every issue in the series, plus a number of additional things. Strnad has written a few additional stories, including Republic: Prelude to Rebellion and Droids: Season of Revolt. Nadeau continues his run on Rogue Squadron comics here.

Battleground: Tatooine takes place 6 months after the Battle of Endor, 4.5 years after the Battle of Yavin. The main characters are Wedge, Tycho, Wes, and the rest of Rogue Squadron, along with Winter. Bib Fortuna and Huff Darklighter both play major roles. The story takes place on and around Tatooine and on Ryloth.

Summary: In the wake of Jabba the Hutt's death, someone on Tatooine is making a lot of money selling Imperial ordinance. Dispatched to the planet under the guise of attending a belated memorial for Biggs Darklighter, Rogue Squadron is tasked with protecting a New Republic Intelligence agent in her search for the source of the goods. What first seems like a simple case of scamming and corruption soon turns more complicated, and deadly.

Review: This is where the series really comes into its own. The stories before this one are fine, but this one is a perfect blend of character development, action, drama, storytelling, and top-notch artwork. If you had to pick just one Rogue Squadron story arc to read, this wouldn't be a bad choice (and, in fact, it was the only one I had read in its entirety for a very long time). I'm always a bit reluctant for yet another return to Tatooine, but sometimes it turns out like this and it's fantastic (and the part on Ryloth was awesome as well). There's a good balance of building off of previous arcs, leaving threads unresolved for future arcs, and still giving readers a satisfying feeling of having read a complete story that stands on its own. This is a great one!

A fairly interesting story in the X-Wing series. I liked it, all in all, I just found some parts a little hard to swallow/think as completely believable. I mean, hey, it's Star Wars but conciousness transplantation by means of brains is a little unsual for Star Wars. Not as bad as Soul transfer though, but it seems that more ppl would do it if it exists. Cool seeing Winter in action, I'm a fan of hers and it's neat seeing her character as an agent especially in light of the destruction of Alderaan albeit being 4+ years ago. Overall, it was enjoyable but not especially great. But the X-Wing series is pretty good in general.

Despite a weaker plot than in the other books, this story read well enough. It was nice to see a bit more of where Biggs Darklighter grew up and how his father views the Rebel Alliance. Also featured a couple of surprising characters. The artwork was okay and on par with the rest of the series.

I've always been such a fan of the X-Wing Rogue Squadron series, if you mainly root for the Rebels, this is a must-read series for you. Both the comics and novels are great. Why Disney+ hasn't already announced an animated adaptation is beyond me. Guess we'll have to wait for the film!😊

I'm still letting the nostalgia factor boost the rating a bit. The art in this one is... not good. Which is unfortunate, as the story holds together better than The Phantom Affair's. Winter and Tycho's relationship kind of comes out of nowhere, but aside from that, it's reasonably solid.
