Well-known as a public figure and theologian, Abraham Kuyper was also, like David, a man after God's own heart. His profound thought was energized by a vibrant faith. It is fitting that the Psalms--the anatomy of the human soul--inspired abundant meditation for Kuyper as he endeavored to apply Christ's Lordship to all of life.
Translated and introduced by James De Jong, these thirty-one meditations on the Psalms reveal the devotion of a seasoned saint who remained faithful to his Lord.
Abraham Kuyper was a Dutch politician, journalist, statesman and theologian. He founded the Anti-Revolutionary Party and was prime minister of the Netherlands between 1901 and 1905.
This is a fantastic little devotional. An immediately striking feature in this book is Kuyper’s liberal use of exclamation points. What is left is Kuyper’s moments of pious worship on paper. It’s also deeply encouraging to know that these reflections are coming from the life-long discipline of a public intellectual and heavy-weight scholar. And this, I think, is the (not so) secret ingredient of his faithfulness to the end (a feat we can no longer take for grant from Christian leaders): he was ever before the feet of Jesus, with palms up and out to receive provision for his spiritual poverty. Consistently kneeling to feed on God’s word made it possible for him to consistently stand firm in the faith without wobbling.

Are you looking for a new devotional book? If so, then look no further. This book is a must-read!
For the past month, my husband and I have used it in our family devotional time, but I would definitely recommend it for personal study as well. Kuyper does not water down messages found within the Scripture. The truths within this book were profound and applicable to my life. I grew in my walk from reading this book. I will warn you. Some of the devotions can be spiritually challenging. There were a couple that really did that to me, taking me deeper in my faith. It seemed like every time my husband or I would read that day’s devotion, I walked away with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Psalms.
Each entry takes less than 10 minutes including Scripture passage and text to read through. The titles of each devotion are intriguing. The font used in this book is very easy to see and read. James DeJong’s expertise in the translation can be clearly seen. If you don’t have a Bible readily available, a nice feature of this book is that the psalm of the day is printed at the front of the devotion. The Psalms that Kuyper covers are in numerical order starting with 1 and ending with Psalm 138. The overall quality and readability of the book is good.
I enjoyed using this book for family devotions, but I would not recommend doing that if you have small children. Our daughter is an infant, so she is still too small to really participate. But for older children, married couples, or singles this is a great book. I would definitely recommend it.

I have a soft spot for the Psalms. They were formative in my youth and continue to be a source of energizing vibrant faith. I am always seeking to hear what others have to say about them. In Ever In Thy Sight, Abraham Kuyper delivers 31 devotions on the Psalms.
About the Author
Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) was a Prime Minister of the Netherlands and the founder of the Free University of Amsterdam. He is a famous Calvinist and Dutch theologian. I recently read and reviewed his excellent book On Education.
While this is a translated work, you still feel the impact of his words. He often writes in short, pithy sentences, and he is generous with his use of exclamations. And since he is studying the Psalms, I believe they are genuinely appropriate.
31 Psalms
In these 31 Psalms, Kuyper covers a wide range of human emotions. He actually focuses on a single verse, sometimes two, to teach us God’s truth. He speaks on being blessed, God’s wrath, being brokenhearted, and the glory of God.
At the time I am reading and writing this review, it is the Easter season. Kuyper does an amazing job of helping us understand the messianic undertones in the passages, but he does not overstate them. He reminds us that they are sometimes subtle, yet still perfect prophecies.
An Abundant Life
The book is beautifully designed with the quality I have come to expect from Lexham Press. Green leaves on the cover surround the golden yellow title, and it is the perfect representation of the truths in this book. With Christ our King at the center of our life, we can live life abundantly, and thrive in his presence.
I received a free copy of Ever In Thy Sight but was not required to write a positive review.
