I think graphic novels are one of the coolest ways to learn about history. Honestly, I would have learned so much more back in my high school days if I had history books like this. So, I'm seriously impressed by this book just for the premise.
I also really like learning about Europe, so seeing a non-fiction biographical graphic novel about Winston Churchill made me quite excited and I just HAD to pick it up.
This book isn't the purest of graphic novels. If you're expecting something like a manga or comic book, you've got to get through the first half. It's more of a history textbook (in a good way - very informative and knowledgeable) with real pictures from Winston Churchill's past. He's a really interesting fellow, and this book gave a great overview and biography of him. This book is really just an introduction and overall summary of this man's life, but it's exactly what I expected it to be. Let's be honest, this man was basically a legend for all of the things that happened in his life, so 100 pages wasn't going to cut it for his ENTIRE history.
Once you get past the introduction, you get into the graphic novel portion and it is SUPER COOL. The illustrations are detailed, the colours are rich and it suits the story really well. It's really interesting to look at just like the information is interesting to read.
Overall, this was a ridiculously cool graphic novel and I'd love to see more bios written like this. It's awesome!

Churchill: A Graphic Biography is my second Graphic Novel.
Many of us have watched various documentaries and movies about Winston Churchill as he is such a well-known historical figure. In fact, one could argue if it wasn’t for Churchill standing up to the evil of Adolf Hitler (when many wouldn’t) the western world quite possibly would have fallen to Nazism. The last Churchill biography I read was The Churchill Factor - written by the effervescent Boris Johnson (yes, he of the foppish hair), which was an excellent biography and I highly recommended it. I therefore came to this Graphic Novel with a smidgeon of knowledge about the subject.
This book covers his life from that of a little boy running around Blenheim Palace (his birthplace) in 1880 to the end of WW2 in 1945. This guy packed so, so much into this life. He was descendant of the Duke of Marlborough line, his father was Conservative MP Lord Randolph Churchill – so Winston was from aristocratic stock. He also participated in numerous wars in places like Cuba, India, Sudan and South Africa, this was followed by his time as a parliamentarian where he managed to swap teams (twice) and was known as an outspoken, unruly, opinionated man with very few friends. But he had a massive intellect and mind. He held various senior posts in Government such as First Lord of the Admiralty, Secretary of State for War, Minister for Munitions and Chancellor of the Exchequer and a few others. He ended up being Prime Minister after Britain decided they had enough of appeasing Hitler and needed someone to stand up to him. Well, Winston was your man – has was a fighter. He was also an accomplished painter, bricklayer (a hobby - of all things), writer and journalist, historian and orator.
Okay there is so much a book needs to cover if they want to do this giant of a man justice. Probably easier to cram his full story using words into a 500-600 page book as compared to 120 pages of pictures with speech bubbles in a Graphic Novel. Well these guys did it, they really did.
The writing was on point, as was the artwork. In fact, the artwork was superb. The pictures almost came alive in front of your eyes. Now, I am not sure my previous reading filled in any gaps – that’s hard to tell – but the team ( Vincent Delmas, Christophe Regnault et al) hit the significant points in this period of his life very nicely indeed. But I would have liked a little more about his wife Clementine and their relationship, even if it was a couple more scenes – small criticism.
Some of my enduring images and takeaways of this delightful book include:
• Winston was a prolific drinker. Particularly in the latter part of the book, a champagne or
whiskey glass was forever in his hand (this book has the pictures to prove it!)
• His desire to fight – whether it be politics or war. He wanted to be right in the middle of it.
• Winston loved giving free advice, to anyone.
• His Dad wasn’t what you’d describe as a helicopter parent.
• It’s lucky he didn’t die during the number of conflicts he participated in.
• The ‘pissing scene’ on the Siegfried line towards the end of WW2.
• His suspicion of Stalin and Communists in the post-war period.
You’ll also receive a good supply of Churchillian quotes, you will see the usuals – but my favourite this time was "When I was younger, I made it a rule never to take strong drink before lunch. It is now my rule never to do so before breakfast".
I will give this book 5 stars as I enjoyed it so much, and isn’t that what it’s all about? I had a ball – and for those new to him, what a great place to start.

A graphic novel of Churchill's life from a young man involved in skirmishes as part of British colonialism up to the end of World War II. This focuses on the political side of his life leaving his personal life mostly unsung. I found this very interesting being born years after his death. Churchill was a very complicated man, often contradictory and contrary but quite brilliant. I would have liked to see this continue into the 20 years he lived after the end of World War II. The art was quite good.

Was Churchill a complicated person? Surely. Was he a polymath? Probably. I've yet to read a biography of the man, though have learned much about him via movies and documentaries, and it's hard not to have great admiration for the man. This graphic biography is wonderfully illustrated, and I learned things I didn't know. Why is history not taught this way?

I learnt alot of valuable information from this book about Winston Churchill that i didnt know before.
The book takes us through Winston Churchill's life from childhood and his upbringing through to his military experience and background and experiences during the 1st world war.
This is a great informal book for anyone wanting to learn about this great man in a more inventive and memorable format.
This is a fantastic graphic novel about one of the most historically remembered and important figures in british history to date.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel talking about Churchill's life and his involvement in World War II. It's a great way to learn history and learn more about a very important and influential political leader of the 20th century.

This is an interesting little title. I've always had a fondness for Churchill, but hadn't read a full book about him, and I like graphic novels, so this seemed like it'd be a good fit.
The best part about this book is the art, hands down. I loved seeing how Winston aged as the book progressed, starting out as a young, handsome redhead(!) and ending up as the rotund balding Churchill that we generally see. The other aspects of the art were good, too, of course, but I really loved how Churchill came across in particular.
What I didn't like so much were the intros. There was a historical introduction, which basically told the story that was told in the graphic novel, except with real pictures of Churchill, and it was so unnecessary. It's a GRAPHIC NOVEL -- don't have pages upon pages of text that you're going to cover anyway in the main story! Those pages could have been used for other things, like Churchill's life after the war (the book stops at the end of WWII) or for more character development. It's a short book -- don't waste pages!
Which brings me into another thing, the lack of much of his family. We get chunks with his parents at the beginning, but we meet his wife on his wedding day, and she shows up mostly in the background throughout the book. Why nothing leading up to the marriage? I know that his wife was hugely influential in his life, and it would have be nice to have that acknowledged. I think his kids show up in a panel, but I don't think they're named or anything.
This is a book that's definitely about Churchill the politician, and neglects him as the man. Which I understand, as the book isn't long and has to cut somewhere. But I would have loved a bit more of him as a man to make him more human, rather than just a grand historical figure driven by the knowledge of his own destiny.
If you're curious and want an overview of Churchill's career, this may be the book for you. The art is the best part, but there's information too.

I am not a big reader of graphic novels and books (I used to read them when I was younger but not that much in recent years), but this title caught my attention due to the subject matter and to the authors and contributors. The book, which was first published in French in 2018, had some excellent reviews, and although I’m not an expert, in my opinion they are well deserved.
The book is not a full biography (we don’t see the great man die), but we follow him from early childhood until the end of World War II, and especial attention is given to the war period. The book also includes a foreword by Andrew Roberts —an expert on Churchill who has written about him and about WWII— endorsing the book, and an introduction (with B&W and colour photographs) and brief biography of Churchill by François Kersaudy, historical consultant of the volume, which further enhances the content.
The illustrations are beautiful and well-executed, in a classical style, with an interesting use of colours and shadows. Although they are in full colour, green, ochre, brown, and dark hues predominate from the beginning, as if foreshadowing the coming war, and the last part of the book (approximately the last fifty pages) are dedicated fully to World War II. There is a predominance of illustrations about his public life (as a war reporter, in the military, and later as a politician), but there are also some about his personal life, where we get to see Churchill, the man. The moments of action are interspersed with some quieter ones, although the illustrations dealing with the war, attacks, and action, are particularly fine and impressive. The text complements the images perfectly, and the writer has chosen the materials well, highlighting snippets of speeches and expressions he is well known for. That does not mean the book paints an unrealistic picture of Churchill, showing him as heroic and always right, without flaws or foibles. The man emerges from the picture as well, with his stubbornness, his recklessness at times, and his determination to do whatever necessary (not always the most suitable attitude for a politician, although the opposite isn’t particularly desirable either).
This is a great book to introduce Churchill to people of all ages who might not be too familiar with his biography, or know very little about him, who like to experiment with other formats rather than the standard book or are fans of graphic novels and books, and who enjoy their history in bite-size and visual format. The book is larger than a standard paperback, and it would make a beautiful present for anybody interested in the subject, in WWII, or just fans of graphic novels. It’s also particularly appealing at this time of crisis, when the role of politicians has come to the fore, and it’s impossible not to compare our current leaders with some memorable figures from the past and wonder how they might have dealt with the situation.
(There are, of course, action scenes depicting the war, although not particularly gross or explicitly gore, although parents of very young children might want to check the book themselves beforehand).

In this title, Delmas presents the major important points of Winston's life, starting with his childhood and ending with the end of World War II. Along the way, we see Churchill enter parliament, command the Royal Navy, and rise to Prime Ministership.
Churchill has such an interesting life. He left us so much of his writing that he is one of the most written about people in modern history. Readers are captivated by his life. Yet this comic reads like a play-by-play of the highlights of his life. One one page, he argues the merits of 8 hour work days and paid sick leave, and on the next page, we are at the altar at his wedding. That is the first we see of the woman marrying Winston. A few panels later, on the same page, Winston is back in Parliament. This happens over and over - one event melting into the next without any true exploration of any of them. I honestly feel like I learned more and cared more about Churchill from the ten-page introduction than from the novel itself.
This would be great for readers who want a fast intro into Churchill's main events, but nothing more.

Churchill is a unique depiction of the life of Winston Churchill that places his story in the context of the times while enabling the reader to truly visualize the key moments in his life and career.
Although the illustrations were great. This book was a bit of a disappointment for me. I expected a full history on one of Britain's most memorable Prime Ministers but what I got was a very brief, very one-sided depiction of history. This is not the book you should read if you want an objective view of Churchill that shows his flaws as well as his strengths. He held some radical racial views and I think any book about him today should mention this. Instead, the character of Churchill and all those who surrounded him were caricatures. There was no sense of empathy developed at all which could be partially due to the time skips that made the story poorly paced and difficult to follow. I really disliked the ending. It seemed rushed where the rest of the story dragged.
So all in all. Read this to learn about one of Britain’s most well known prime ministers. And then pick up something else and learn about his character.
Maybe start with this article something that was recommended to me by my GCSE history teacher back in 2015.

THIS is what an historical graphic novel should be! the introduction gives solid context and establishes the depth of the writers' intent. The illustrations are nothing short of jaw-dropping. In one sitting, readers are able to encounter the personality and the times of a huge figure in 20th century world history. Highly recommended.

Excellent overview of the great leader's life, with some of the best anecdotes used and with a natural focus on the Second World War. However, skipping over the 1920s and the last twenty years of his life, post 1945, leaves out important events, not least of which was the 1946 'Iron Curtain' speech. However, the text and graphics are great and the publishing standards high. This is a very worthy and enjoyable addition to the Churchill literature.

There are many Churchill biographies on the market. This one, I believe, is a wonderful introduction to Churchill and the political developments in Great Britain from WWI to WWII. If a reader is looking for an in-depth biography from cradle to grave, this is not the book for them. However, I could absolutely see this one being used in schools or homeschooling to introduce older students and young adults to Churchill and his way up in the political ranks.
I found a couple of grammar mistakes, but overall this was a great read!

I say 'introduction' because this book doesn't seek in any way to be comprehensive and indeed it's disappointing that it abruptly cuts off at end of the war in Europe. Still, the illustrations are very good and if you see this as a launching pad for more in-depth reading then it's mission accomplished.

I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley.
I thought this was good but not great, maybe because I also just finished another book about Churchill (The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz) that I thought showcased his personality better and dealt with WWII more clearly. Not bad though, overall! I learned a fair amount and wasn't bored.

A good but uneven biography of Churchill. I think the graphic format helped tell the swashbuckling elements of war and angry disputes with other politicians but didn't allow enough space to get into the more nuanced parts of Churchill's life that are needed to fully understand the man. I also think the focus was, understandably, skewed towards the parts of his life which lend themselves to comic book retelling so huge parts of his life are omitted. For example, I don't think there was a single reference to Churchill's mental health battles despite them being a significant part of his life and it's hard to understand his motivations without knowing more about the "black dog" visitations. Despite the limitations, I still found it an entertaining biography and the graphic format would be particularly good at capturing the imagination of a younger audience.

'Churchill: A Graphic Biography' by Vincent Delmas with illustrations by Christophe Regnault & Alessio Cammardella is a look at a famous life.
Starting with Winston's early family life and the disappointments of his father, this looks at his military career and his military career up through the end of World War II. Winston had his disappointments and failures early on, but he was able to push through those and become one of the most influential people of the 20th Century.
Included is an introduction by Andrew Roberts with photos of Winston. The narrative is a bit dry, but the illustrations really shine here.

Churchill was one of the most influential historical figures of the 20th century. As such, trying to contain and highlight his sphere of influence into a graphic biography is an ambitious endeavor. Regrettably, this graphic novel makes a good try, but falls short. If the creative team had focused on a particular period of his political career, I think this could have been a stronger historic account of Churchill.

I had not read anything about Churchill. Besides the random things you encounter in life. But, wow, this book made me want to read more! I definitely felt like a little kid, sprawled out on the floor reading a wartime superhero comic, but it was also very educational. With no effort at all, I have learned some basics about Churchill and wow, what a remarkable figure of history he was!

Наглядная (в прямом смысле слова) биография исторической личности. Факты подобраны так, чтобы было интересно и детям, и взрослым. Графика тоже на уровне. Доволен импульсивным выбором к прочтению.

Very very cool graphic novel and informative but not too heavy. Doesn’t go into detail about churchills flaws but does give a good background before war

Honestly, I did learn a couple of things about the political and power moves around WW2. Quite good this story. Might be interested to read a longer biography of Churchill.

Fun for those who know the life of Churchill and his accomplishments and his failures, though it would be confusing to the youngster who knows nothing of this greatest of men in the 20th century.

I read this book the day that it arrived – I had been looking forward to reading it – and it was well worth the wait and a real difference from the run of the mill, standard biographies that you can get on Winston Churchill – and as the book stays from the outset in the Foreword, there are over 1,000 available…
I thought that this was an excellent book – it claims to be a graphic biography and that is exactly what you get – The book focuses on key moments in his life and career and I thought that it was superb and the images in the book are stunning too.
It is 4.5 stars from me for this one, rounded up to 5 stars for Goodreads and Amazon – it was a stunning piece of work, the introduction was spot on and the images used are perfect – very highly recommended!
