The Necessary Evil event continues as Tommy must prove he’s worthy of becoming the White Ranger, while Jason, Trini and Zack must decide if they will become the new OMEGA RANGERS - even if it means deceiving everyone they hold dear.

THE TRUE ORIGIN OF THE WHITE RANGER!

The critically-acclaimed Necessary Evil event continues, as the Power Rangers are left reeling from the events of their war with Lord Drakkon in Shattered Grid. But perhaps none is more affected than Tommy Oliver, formerly the Green Ranger, and now without purpose...until Zordon brings him a new opportunity. But what will take for Tommy to prove he’s worth of being the all-new WHITE RANGER?

Meanwhile, Jason, Trini and Zack must decide if they will become the new OMEGA RANGERS - even if it means deceiving everyone they hold dear.

The writing duo of New York Times bestseller Ryan Parrott (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) and the GLAAD Award-nominated Sina Grace (Iceman) join artists Francesco Mortarino (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) and Eduardo Francisco (Adventures of Superman) to answer some of the biggest questions in Power Rangers history!

Probably should give it 3.5 stars, because I fully just skimmed the Rita Repulsa solo issue. Otherwise great.

This was solid and fun. The White Rangers enters the story and it looks like the team is going to be splitting up to tackle different threats. The story started to make more sense to me as I was reading this volume. I also really liked the issue focusing on Rita and her goonies. It's those touches that really make this series shine for me. Plus there is some really cool Zord art in this one.

Jason is joined by Trini and Zack in his new mission, Tommy gains the White Light powers, Billy does everything in his power to help Tommy, and Kim deals with the emotional fallout with Tommy. Also, some more tragic Rita story.

Nothing special but giving it 3 stars feels somewhy unfair.

The timeline is getting a little confusing here as the two series begin to converge. That said, I still very much continue to enjoy this retcon of the show.

This volume focuses on Jason’s and Tommy’s next steps as leaders. In this volume, we get to see Tommy’s transition from the green ranger to the white power ranger. However, this transition comes with a sudden edict from Zordon. As the white ranger, Zordon wants Tommy to now lead the rangers. I found this to be a bit of a heartbreaking decision even if it makes it easier for Jason to break away from the main team with Trini and Zack.

Also, can’t say I cared much for Zordon’s flippant “oh, Jason will get over it because he’s a good sport” attitude. I know that the comic is trying to follow in the show’s footsteps while trying to make sense of senseless decisions, but I kind of wish Zordon didn’t have to be so flippant about the leadership change. Zordon owes Jason a bit more than what was shown.

I think the compromise for the writers is to focus that transition conversation between Jason and Tommy. This is an appropriate choice as the two clearly want what’s best for the team and each other. I like their mutual respect for one another and that centers each of their conversations.

Overall, I think this volume in the Go-Go series made a whole lot more sense the the main line. This volume provided a lot more context for the rangers’ motivations and feelings while the main line seems focused on the larger goals of the Necessary Evil arc.

I think I've made my love of Power Rangers fairly apparent so I'll just go on to say, this was another great volume in the series! Looking forward to the next to see what happens with the Omega Rangers! Bring on the awesome!

Oh man it's getting good!

I love this series. I love the continued back story for characters and things we never saw on screen. I also love that this includes the original show as part of the story without being 100% necessary.

It's easy to forget when reviewing these Power Rangers TPBs what actually happens in each volume; even though they're divided into 4 issue collections, it's all really just one long story being split rather than separate story arcs. But the issues in this volume definitely stick out in my mind, because they're even better than the usual high quality of the series.

The main focus is split between the continued formation of the Omega Rangers, as Jason, Zack, and Trini struggle with the idea of leaving the Mighty Morphin' team to further their new mission for the Emissary, while Tommy struggles with the power of the White Light, something else that the TV show didn't have enough time to really delve into. It's some great character work, and considering that's what this series was designed for, fleshing out the MMPR team where the show didn't have the time/space to, it's doing it really well. And then the final issue of the collection focuses on Rita's origin, which is truly heartbreaking. She's also a pretty one dimensional villain in the show, but this issue gives her more of a backstory that gives us just a glimpse into the reason she is the way she is.

Francesco Mortarino pencils three of the four issues, while Eduardo Francisco pops up for the Rita issue. Mortarino is especially noteworthy, since he continues on over to the Power Rangers title post-relaunch, and it's very clear why here. His pencils are clean and clear, and he doesn't sacrifice any detail when the battles kick into high gear either.

This is more of a 4.5, but we're in a rounding down mood today. Still, that's a very impressive showing from an always impressive series.

This ongoing series is coming to a close. There's only one more volume after this before the new series begins. This volume focuses on the origin of the White Ranger. These were some of my favorite episodes as a child. I absolutely loved when Tommy returned in a spiffy new outfit. One of my most cherished memories of childhood Christmas gifts involves me waking up way too early to find a stuffed White Ranger doll under the tree.

This book takes all of the implied emotions and underlying feelings that would make sense during this change in the team (but were not shown at all in the show) and make them at the forefront. Jason is dealing with knowing the events of Shattered Grid and potentially starting a new team of his own (which we know will become the Omega Rangers). Tommy is struggling with having lost his Green powers and figuring out how to move on. Zedd is the new big bad in town. There's even a reference to the actual episode in a footnote if you want to go watch these episodes that connect on Netflix.

We get to see Tommy proving himself worthy of the new power. Saba!

In addition to the White Ranger story, the final issue collected in this volume focuses on Rita and her minions during their time in the space dumpster. It is a standalone story. It is everything I love about these Power Rangers comics. It fills a big gap from the show with something that fleshes out characters and strengthens the worldbuilding. And, of course, I love that it's a story focusing on EMPATHY!

I give this book a 5/5. I absolutely love these books. They're my favorite thing to read. I've struggled with whether I should read the issues as they're released or continue waiting for the trade paperbacks, but I like reading (mostly) a whole story arc in one sitting.

Well well well
If it isn’t a deeply troubling storyline that leaves me wanting, nay, needing to read the next issue asap. Classic Power Rangers.
This one was insane ngl
Tommy and Jason really got some time to shine and I ate that up. They’re amazing. They’re resilient. They’re low key in toxic situations. I love them.
And that Rita issue was um something else. Good heavens. I think there’s a difference between psychotherapy and straight up torcher, but Zordon does not know where it is. Now I’m thinking critically about ethics and punishment. Thanks a lot, Zordon.
But really, this one was a lot of fun and it had angst for days. You know what would have made it even better though? (Y’all know what I’m about to say) More Billy content.
Please and thank you
8/10 I think I need to take a break and go look at the sky for a while. Like wow. At least I got what I wanted (hehehe people loving and supporting one another so that no one has to carry things alone) and the art was amazing. God bless.

I’ve really been wanting to see the origin of the White Ranger, so I’m glad we were finally given it in this book! I also really enjoyed the exposition of the Omega Ranger situation a bit more and while I didn’t know at first how to take the last issue in this volume, I ended up really enjoying it!

This series is starting to lose steam. Now have time travel multiverse (sigh). I hope this raps up good in the last volume.
